In reply to Robin's question, I suspect that Donna mentions only one of
William and Abigail's children by name (son John) because he's the one through
whom her Carpenter line passes, and that her addition of the three unnamed
siblings reflects the total of four Carpenter children (incl. John) who
accompanied their parents from England to Massachusetts. You'll note my instruction
to "[s]ee TAG article for all known children of William2 of Rehoboth, with a
corrected birth order."
That article ("The Family of William2 Carpenter of Rehoboth, Massachusetts:
With the English Origin of the Rehoboth Carpenters," _The American
Genealogist_ 70[1995]:193-204) lists the children as follows (first five baptized at
Shalbourne): 1. JOHN, bp. 8 Oct. 1626; 2. ABIGAIL, bp. 31 May 1629; 3. WILLIAM,
bp. 22 Nov. 1631; 4. JOSEPH, bp. 6 April 1634; 5. SAMUEL, bp. 1 March
1636[/7], bur. Shalbourne, 20 April 1637; 6. SAMUEL (again), b. say 1638 (not
1644); 7. HANNAH, b. Weymouth, Mass., 3 2m [April] 1640; 8. ABIAH, b. Weymouth, 9
2m [April] 1643. The article includes all the facts behind the revision of
the birth order presented by Amos B. Carpenter (1898) and also puts to rest the
notion of a son Abraham (he didn't exist).

But here's a question (for Gene, I guess...or for anyone who has
good answers): It appears that the last portion of Donna's message is
saying that among the children of William (11) and Abigayle (Briant)
Carpenter of Rehoboth, only ONE is known by name (John 12, b. 1628); that
three others are known to exist, but not known by name.
Hello Donna (and Gene!):
I am grateful for the summary of pre-Rehoboth Carpenters. Gene
has posted much of this info in pieces from time to time, and it is
terrific now to have such a tidy summary.
Is my inference correct?

Would you like to get that someone special a very thoughful gift for
Christmas? Then now is the time to initiate the process.
If you have not recently logged onto FTDNA, I would recommend anyone and
everyone who is interested in DNA to log onto www.ftdna.com . From the
opening screen, select your surname or that of someone special in your life.
(There are currently 2388 Surname projects administered by FTDNA.) Then take
a look at a surname of your choice, even start with yours, or that of a
spouse, or maybe a neighbor. After selecting a name, such as Carpenter for
example, then select: "members.cox.net/johnrcarpenter/index.html" This will
take you to detailed information about the particular surname selected. If
you selected CARPENTER, here you will see "Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project".
A similar one will appear for each of the 2388 surnames.
With respect to the Carpenter surname, Table 1, provides the Carpenter
Haplotype list, which lists each person who has been tested and agreed to
have their DNA markers listed. However, only their ID is shown. The
preceeding paragraphs of: Backgrounds; Brief Explanation; Methodology; and
Results, will provide a wealth of information and could possibly answer most
of your questions.
At this point if your are interested in having your DNA tested or that of a
spouse or some other male relative, go back to the surname page and select
that surname, when the next screen comes up, simply go to the lower half of
that page and you will find a form that provides the information that Family
Tree DNA "FTDNA" will need to process your DNA sample. Where it lists "Type
of Test" it is recommended that you select "Y-DNA25..." as this will provide
you with the best DNA results at the present time.
I have no connection whatso ever with FTDNA except that I had my DNA tested
a few years ago by them, which allowed me to confirm some of my and other's
research results. In other words, DNA helped to provide the missing link. I
could prove my ancestry back to a certain individual and literally hit a
brick wall. Another individual could prove his ancestry beyond my proven
ancestor by four more generations. When this other individual had his DNA
tested, FTDNA sent me an e-mail saying "You have a match!". those four words
were worth ten times what it cost me to have my DNA tested. In addition, a
little while later, just for my own edification, my half brother's son had
his DNA tested. It was a perfect match. Which just proves that his father
and I shared the same (father) ancestor. DNA results did not give us the
name, it just helped to confirm what our documention showed via birth,
marriage and death records.
Lets get some activity going on these lists again.
Thanks. Bob Carpenter
CARPENTERS of ENGLAND to AMERICA
Listers,
Gene was kind enough to help me understand the flaws in the English line of
Carpenters that I always took for granted. This REALLY HELPED ME and he has
given permission to post it to the list as I thought it may help others too.
Below is an outline I made after reading the "Colonial Carpenters" edited by
G.N. MacKenzie with added notes by Gene which start with #9 William.
Thanks, Gene, for your permission to post this !

who gives as this William's supposed sons (your nos. 10, below) only James
and William (purported father of William b. ca. 1576). Both versions suffer
from the absolute absence of evidence connecting this lineage to the
immigrant Carpenters; most of the intergenerational links claimed above are
similarly devoid of genealogical proof. More recently (1971), Raymond G.
Carpenter and Harry Rogers revised this lineage, after William (your no. 6,
above), as follows: Rev. Richard (said to be the brother of James [your no.
7, above]); Robert of Upton Scudamore, Wiltshire; William of Marden,
Wiltshire; Robert of Marden, who they claim is the father of Richard of
Amesbury and of William (born ca. 1576), father of Wm. of Rehoboth (The
Carpenter Family News-Journal 1, no. 3[1971]: n. pag. [microfiche 3 of 18,
FHL set no. 6,047,153; repr. in The Second Boat 1 no. 1(1980):15]). This is
the version that appears on John R. Carpenter's CD, Carpenters' Encyclopedia
of Carpenters, 2001. The only intergenerational connection for which there
is supporting evidence, however, is that between the two Marden men. It
turns out, moreover, that the lineage going back from Rev. Richard is
positively nullified by the fact that the Robert named in his will is
identified as his servant, not his son. Whatever the version, to say it
doesn't make it so!]

doubt by someone eager to benefit from the fact that Alexander's daughter
Alice was William Bradford's second wife.]
....................... 10 Richard CARPENTER b: Abt. 1565 in ENG
"Possiblly to Amesbury" (to escape persecution [no basis for this]) Richard
of Amesbury, Wiltshire, seems to have come from the neighboring parish of
Newton Tony; his parentage--let alone earlier ancestry--is unknown
(Zubrinsky, "Abiah3 Carpenter of Warwick, Rhode Island, and His Family," The
New England Historical and Genealogical Register [hereafter Register]
159[2005]:55-68, at 67, note 63). In fact all that is truly known about him
appears in the 1671 deed by which William1 of Providence gives sister
Frideswide the Amesbury property he inherited from from his father, whom the
deed names as Richard (perhaps the Richard Carpenter buried at Amesbury on
21 Sept. 1625). (The deed, incidentally, calls William's sister Fridgswett
[once] and Fridgsweete [thrice], never Fridgswith, as is so often said.)
The claim that William1 of Providence and William2 of Rehoboth were first
cousins--which, if true, would make brothers of this Richard and the William
born ca. 1676-- is based on a debatable interpretation of certain wording in
the will of William2 of Rehoboth (Register 159:64-66 [appendix 1]). It
remains to be proved that the two were closely related. Again, no matter
how often it is repeated, to say it doesn't make it so!]

that William1 of Providence came in mid 1635 with his wife, Elizabeth
Arnold, father-in-law William Arnold, and the latter man's family. Although
the Arnolds arrived in Massachusetts in 1635, there are several reasons to
believe that William Carpenter did not come with them (Register 159:67-68
[appendix 2]). It's highly likely that William1 Carpenter of Providence
arrived in 1636 or 1637 and married Elizabeth Arnold at Providence in the
latter year (ibid.).]

Q. Was Jemima, the wife of Benjamin-5 BURLINGHAM, a CARPENTER?
>From Chapter 109, "The Burlingham Family" in "The Settlers of the Beekman
Patent" by Frank Doherty:
"Benjamin-5 BURLINGHAM (Samuel-4-3, Thomas-1, Roger-1) was poss. born in DC
[Dutchess County] and m. Jemima _________ who d. 8 June 1790 in her 41st
year and was bd. in the Valley View Cemetery in Dover. She was admitted
into the Dover Baptist church 19 Sept. 1789... Benjamin BURLINGHAM was
mentioned in the will of Sebastian WHEELER dated 21 April 1788. [Dutchess
County Wills on file in the Surrogate Court, Poughkeepsie, NY; A:74]."
Probably due to Benjamin BURLINGHAM's association with Sebastian WHEELER,
various online records identify Jemima's maiden name as WHEELER without
citing a source:
http://www.longislandgenealogy.com/hulse/fam02068.htmhttp://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=judykaye&id=I1435
9
Sebastian WHEELER's will is online at...
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/localities.northam.usa.states.n
ewyork.counties.dutchess/4964
Regrettably, the will does not identify any of his eight daughters by name.
However, one son-in-law is identified as such and the reference to Benjamin
BURLINGHAM only pertains to an outstanding financial obligation so the
identification of Jemima as a WHEELER seems doubtful (although it cannot be
ruled out).
In reviewing the given names of the children of Benjamin & Jemima (-----)
BURLINGHAM, one wonders if CARPENTER might have been Jemima's maiden name.
Benjamin was of Rhode Island and ancestry and the CARPENTER family was
numerous in both RI and Dutchess County. Here are the names of their
children (birth order uncertain):
Jemima
Rebecca
Elizabeth
Benjamin
Joseph
Charles
Carpenter
Abraham
John
Martha
Susannah
Ruby
Sarah
Hannah
Lavina
Philip
Does anyone have any CARPENTER wills, deeds, etc. with evidence to support
or refute this speculation?
Thanks for your help,
Perry

By 1860, this value had increased to $6500 and his sister-in-lar, Matilda Aldrich, owned $3000 in personal property 1). This dramatic increase in property could be dut to inheritance. Stephen's father-in-law, Brice Aldrich, had died in 1854. It's also possible that a member of Stephen's own family had died leaving him property. (S.Johnston).
There are some discrepancies in the birth dates for Stephen and children. The family is in the 1840 Census, and the 1850 census, lists Stephen as 40 in 1850, Charles as 12, Helen as 10, Adelia as 5 and Cassius as 2. 11/BCT). Had 6 children per 10 - which concurs w/ S. Johnston Report.
1850 census concurs b. 1838 as age12 in 1850 Census 10).
iii. Adelia Vail Carpenter, (Stephen CARPENTER, David), b. c. 1845, Penfield, Mon. Co., NY, b. 1847 d. 25 May 1914.

This is regarding the message from Ed regarding his Carpenters (Zimmerman)
born in Switzerland.
The Carpenter line that I am researching is supposed to have originated in
Germany. Last name originally Zimmerman. Is Zimmerman also a common name
in Switzerland? I know that they share a border & along that border many
speak German. Just curious.
Barbara
I found a post on the Dison genforum which says :
Asseneth "Sene" JORDAN b.1780/1790 married William DYSON
Sene DISON is found on the Troup Co GA census as widow in 1850. Her son Thomas moved to AL and then TX.
Does anyone know if Asseneth "Sene" JORDAN or William DISON had a connection to the Carpenter or Wilkins families?
Thanks,
Donna

Hi list.
I have a little dilemma. And I need help. I have two Carpenter lines that I
know have to connect. Just haven't found the common person(s).
The first line is Emanuel Carpenter (Zimmerman) born in Switzerland and dies
in Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. (1702-1780) That Carpenter line ends with
his daughter Barbara Carpenter (1738-1779) who married Jacob Ferree. I would
like to find the connection to John Carpenter born 1827 in Warwick Twp,
Lancaster Co, PA. who was married to Fanny Schmuck. I know it won't be a direct
line, but I would like to find out how they fit. The first line is my Mom's
Mothers side and the second is my Mom's Fathers side. Kissing Cousins I guess.
If this makes any sense and someone can help me with this please e-mail me.
I have more info which will probably be necessary.
Thanks
Best regards,
ED

I am looking for any information on Bessie Melissa CARPENTER b. 23 Mar 1880 in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York.
She was the daughter of Beecher and Julia (CLARKE) CARPENTER.
Bessie was living in 1892 at the time of her grandmother's death, and the 1900 census information for her parents shows 1 child born, 1 living. I do not find Bessie in the 1900 census under Carpenter, so I am assuming that she was married at that time.
I have a lot of Bessie's ancestry to share.
Thank-you for any help you can offer,
Karla
