I am searching for infomation about Robert Carpenter, br: ca. 1807 in TN.
I have not yet found him in Henderson Co. Tn., as I believe he lived there
in the 1800s and then moved to Sharp County, Arkansas with his wife Mitilda
(GAWF) and children.
I have found him in the 1870 Sharp Co. Arkansas census, listed as being born
in TN., but the word "Germany" is listed beside his name on the Heritage
Quest census record for 1870.
The children of Robert and Matilda /Gawf/ Carpenter are: ( all born in Tn )
Thomas M. CARPENTER b. 15 Jan 1831
Sarajain CARPENTER b. 19 Jan 1833
James Hardin CARPENTER b 6 March 1835
Rodise CARPENTER b. 15 Feb 1837
Edmon CARPENTER b.22 Jan 1839
Marthy Jain CARPENTER b. 9 Mar 1842
Mary CARPENTER b. 13 June 1844
Henry CARPENTER b. 27 Oct 1846
One of Robert and Matilda`s grandsons` was named STEPHEN ROBERT (
DAVENPORT )
Does anyone know of this Robert Carpenter???

I'm interested in the recent thread about Carpenters from Virginia. I have a family whose names seem to correlate to the children of John and Mary of Stafford Co., but the birth dates are different, the parents different, and the county different. Ordinarily I would think this means there's no connection -- but then what Laurie said about Benjamin of Amherst Co. caught my eye:
She wrote, "What has drawn me to researching John and Mary of Overwharton Parish,
Stafford Co., Virginia, is the conclusion that the CARPENTER Y-DNA project
(see Carpenter Southern Cousins Y-DNA project by Terry Lee Carpenter) has
found there to be an exact match between Stephen of NC, GA and TN to that
of Benjamin Carpenter of Amherst Co., Virginia. It is also assumed that
Benjamin of Amherst was the son of John and Mary as well born Oct. 5, 1746."
I'm confused. Here is the family I have:
1 Thomas CARPENTER b: Bef. 1730 in Virginia or England d: Abt. 1794 in Amherst Co., Virginia
...... 2 Rebecca CARPENTER
...... 2 Son CARPENTER
...... 2 Thomas CARPENTER, Jr. b: 1750 in Prob. Virginia d: July 1781 in Amherst Co., Virginia
.......... +Sarah UNKNOWN
...... 2 John CARPENTER b: 1752 in Amherst Co., Virginia d: 1828
.......... +Sarah UNKNOWN m: in Amherst Co., Virginia
...... *2nd Wife of John CARPENTER:
.......... +Mary O'NEAL
...... 2 Benjamin CARPENTER, Sr. b: March 1, 1755 in Rockfish River, Amherst Co., Virginia d: January 12, 1840 in Knox Co., Illinois
.......... +Sarah UNKNOWN m: in Amherst Co., Virginia
...... 2 James CARPENTER b: Bet. 1760 - 1770 in Amherst Co., Virginia
.......... +Susan HILL b: February 14, 1798 in Amherst Co., Virginia
...... 2 William CARPENTER b: March 19, 1761 in Rockfish River, Amherst Co., Virginia d: September 14, 1835 in Adair Co., Kentucky
.......... +Mary STRICKLING aka: Mary Stricklen m: January 9, 1789 in Rockfish River, Amherst Co., Virginia
...... 2 George CARPENTER b: 1771 in Amherst Co., Virginia d: Aft. 1850 in Arkansas while visiting brothers
.......... +Jane PHILLIPS m: November 3, 1797 in Amherst Co., Virginia
Are we talking about the same Benjamin Carpenter?
Thanks,
~~Anne Wityk

Laurie,
Thank you for your reply. I research southern
lines of germanic origin and would certainly be
very pleased to know that Stephen has been
positively linked, since he has at times been
said to have a germanic connection through
Yelverton Carpenter, which has not been borne out
by more recent research. It is good to see
serious researchers like you bringing a higher
standard for proof to Carpenter family history
research.
I might point out in case the transcript of the
Overwharton Parish records you have does not
include it, that the same records that show the
birth of John's and Mary's son Charles Carpenter
on 6 September 1756, go on to show that Charles
died 10 October 1756, so there is no connection
between this Charles and any living Charles
subsequent to that date.
Again, thanks for your reply, and best wishes for
success in your search.

I am looking for the parents of Elizabth Carpenter. born, 6 Mar 1767, died
8 Sep 1848. She is buried in Alsey Cemetery, Scott County, Illinois. She
probably born in VA. She married John Ash, 12 Feb 1787, Frederick
County, Virginia. They had at least one daughter, Nancy (she was
probably born in VA , 6 Jun 1788 --she married Jacob Bower).
They also lived in KY in the early 1800's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks, Barbara
I was wondering if anyone had any info a Joseph Carpenter that was born
in Ireland and moved to America in the mid 1700's. He married a woman
named Maria Barnes, and they had at least one child named Ezra in 1795.
Thanks for any info.

Hello David and fellow researchers,
Please excuse me for not stating that the Stephen Carpenter who went to NC,
GA, and TN, is assumed to be the son (Stephen) of John and Mary b. June 24,
1737.
As most researchers of Stephen Carpenter (NC>GA>TN) have found, it has been
a tough road in the locating of written documentation as well as census and
marriage/death records or wills and most of us have yet to prove his
children.
What has drawn me to researching John and Mary of Overwharton Parish,
Stafford Co., Virginia, is the conclusion that the CARPENTER Y-DNA project
(see Carpenter Southern Cousins Y-DNA project by Terry Lee Carpenter) has
found there to be an exact match between Stephen of NC, GA and TN to that
of Benjamin Carpenter of Amherst Co., Virginia. It is also assumed that
Benjamin of Amherst was the son of John and Mary as well born Oct. 5, 1746.
A Couple of other matches with Stephen and Benjamin is Temple Carpenter (b.
abt. 1769 NC) who is assumed to have been the son of Thomas Owen Carpenter
(b. abt. 1740) of Moore Co., North Carolina and Reuben Carpenter b. abt.
1776. who died in South Carolina.
As I have planned for a trip to Virginia and the Carolina's in the Fall. I
am looking to gather more information prior to my leaving, in hopes to
narrow down searching for documents and saving sometime. In prior search of
documents, I have found connections, clues as well as proof in searching
back further. Hoping that something here may pan out as well. *Keeping
fingers crossed*
I would like to THANK Terry Carpenter for his wonderful summary to the
Southern Carpenter lines, as well as John Carpenter for all his work on the
Carpenter DNA project. I am sure that I am not the only one who greatly
appreciates all the work the two of you have done for this group.
Now just to convince my own brother to participate in Y-DNA project so he
doesn't feel someone is just trying to clone him. (ha ha)
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely,
Laurie Carpenter

Dear list members,
I am trying to pin down my descendency from Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin
Carpenter of Revolutionary War fame, and thus am trying to clarify the
marriage of one of his daughters to Amos Gore. According to "A
Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in
America" (1898) by Amos B. Carpenter, Eunice Carpenter married Amos
Gore and moved into the state of New York However, the Stanclift
genealogy by Sherry and Robert Stancliff has Amos Gore marrying Lydia
Carpenter. A resolution to this conflict would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Steve Wilcox
Dear Listers
I was lucky enough to buy a copy of ABC's book some 12 years ago
I noticed there have been several messages regarding revisions to this
I wondered if these revisions covered the family of Cyrus ( 3596) &
Hannah Jenne CARPENTER at the bottom of page 592
I would dearly love to know the name of their eldest son . I am
99.99999999% sure it was not Darwin , But what was it ?????????????
Edwin R and Mila are quite ligit
Sally Melissa is not correct . Their youngest child was Mary Jane who m
La Grange ANDREWS. I dont know which CARPENTER family Sally
Melissa belonged too, is any.
I also think the location of these baptisms could be wrong too. Think
it more likely to have been in Guilford , Wyndham Co , VT
I know this eldest son was alive and in all probability living in or
near Brockport, Monroe Co NY State in 1872
Any help on this would be appreciated
Thank you

Look for extensive revisions to several sections of the Carpenter Memorial
and to other secondary sources in two articles that will appear in the January
2005 issue of _The New England Historical and Genealogical Register_. Also,
beware that Seversmith's original research was limited mostly to the John3
line. With few exceptions, he otherwise repeats the work of Amos B. Carpenter
(for which he wisely takes no responsibility) and, in the case of the Abiah3
line, that of the deForests (_James Cox Brady and His Ancestry_). The
latters' work on Abiah3 and his children (better than ABC's but not without
problems) is addressed (along with that of others) in one of the aforementioned
_Register_ articles.

Hello fellow list members,
Just wanted to share some information I came across that I have not seen posted anywhere in regards to this couple and line.
John and Mary Carpenter of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia had the following children listed in the Overwharton Parish Records for 1720-1760.
Stephen Carpenter born June 24, 1737
John Carpenter born May 15, 1739
William Carpenter born May 5, 1742
Thomas Carpenter born August 7, 1744
Benjamin Carpenter b. October 5, 1746
Ann (Nanny) Carpenter born October 16, 1748
George Carpenter born March 24, 1753
Charles Carpenter born September 6, 1756
I would like to gather more information on the above individuals if anyone has something to share.
As most know, Stephen went on to North Carolina, Georgia and then to Tennessee where he is said to have died. As for the others, I have just came across this information and am just beginning to research more.
Thank you for your time,
Laurie Carpenter
I presume the references used in a recent posting include corrections to the
book known colloquialy as the Carpenter Memorial. I'm very interested in any
revisions, correction, and/or additions. My ggggg grandfather was Isaiah
Carpenter of Shaftsbury, Vermont (individual number 1640 in the Memorial).
One author mentioned a work by Herbert F. Seversmith, _Colonial Families of
Long Island, New York and Connecticut_, 5 vols. (Washington, D.C., 1939-1958).
They also referenced _The American Genealogist_, vol. 70 (1995). Have I
listed these references correctly? And are there any other works where we might
find reliable revisions?
Thank you,

<< I'm trying to find more info. regarding John Carpenter of the Hempstead
L.I., NY area. He married Abigail Rhodes. These people would have lived in
the mid to late 1600's. I have no dates for them. They had a daughter,
Sarah Carpenter who was born around 1693 and died in 1737. She married Joshua
Pettit of Newtown, Long Island. >>
Herbert F. Seversmith (one of the most respected genealogists of the first
half or so of the 20th century) did an extensive revision of Amos B.
Carpenter's work on John3 Carpenter of Rehoboth, Mass., and Huntington, Hempstead, and
Jamaica, L.I., and some of his descendants (_Colonial Families of Long
Island, New York and Connecticut, _ 5 vols. [Washington, D.C., 1939-1958]
2:535-551; see also _The American Genealogist_ [TAG] 70[1995]:197n27, par. 2).
John3, incidentally, was baptized in the parish of Shalbourne,
Wiltshire/Berkshire, England, 8 Oct. 1626, son of William2 and Abigail (Briant [not Bennett,
Searles, etc.]) Carpenter (TAG 70:194, 203).
Seversmith presents evidence that John3's widow (and only known wife) Hannah
was not a Hope but was the daughter of William1 Smith of Weymouth and
Rehoboth, Mass., and Huntington and Jamaica, L.I. (2:549-50). The widow (and only
known wife) of John4 Carpenter (b. probably Huntington, L.I. [not Conn.], ca.
1655, son of John3) was not Abigail but Mary (as named in his will),
presumably the daughter of John1 Rhodes, "who in his will named his daughter wife of
John Carpenter" (Seversmith, 2:536, 550). Seversmith estimates that their
daughter Susannah--she is named in her father's will, which fails to mention
a daughter Sarah--was born at Jamaica, L.I., about 1699 and says that she "is
considered to have married Joshua Pettit of Hempstead" (2:543).

The information presented there is so confused and full of demonstrable
errors that none of it should be trusted.

It shows a John Carpenter marrying an Abigail Rhodes, but gives no further
info. about their children.
Do you have any info. on these specific Carpenters in your database?

Hello Carpenters:
Can someone here provide me a reference either for direct on-line
census lookup, or someone who could do a lookup, for a Charles Keeney in
Tennessee in 1810 (or any Keeney in 1800)?
