Subject: Genealogist Commandments
We've all encountered these Genealogy Commandments, haven't we?
(1) Thou shalt name your male children:
James, John, Joseph, Josiah, Abel, Richard,
Thomas, William
(2) Thou shalt name your female children:
Elizabeth, Mary, Martha, Maria, Sarah, Ida,
Virginia, May
(3) Thou shalt leave NO trace of your female
children.
(4) Thou shalt, after naming your children from the
above lists, call them by strange nicknames such as:
Ike, Eli, Polly, Dolly, and Sukey.---making them
difficult to trace.
(5) Thou shalt NOT use any middle names on any legal
documents or census reports, and only where
necessary, you may use only initials on legal
documents.
(6) Thou shalt learn to sign all documents illegibly
so that your surname can be spelled, or misspelled,
in various ways: Hicks , Hix, Hixe, Hucks, Kicks
(7) Thou shalt, after no more then 3 generations,
make sure that all family records are lost,
misplaced, burned in a fire, or buried so that NO
future trace of them can be found.
(8) Thou shalt propagate misleading legends, rumors,
vague innuendo regarding your place origination.
(A) You may have come from : England, Ireland,
Scotland, Wales....or ??
(B) You may have American Indian ancestry of
the______tribe.
(C) You may have descended from one of three
brothers that came over from_____.
(9) Thou shalt leave NO cemetery records, or
headstones with legible names.
(10)Thou shalt leave NO family Bible with records of
birth, marriages, or deaths.
(11)Thou shalt ALWAYS flip thy name around. If born
James Albert, thou must make all the rest of thy
records in the names of Albert, AJ, JA, AL, Bert,
Bart, or Alfred.
(12)Thou must also flip thy parent's names when making
reference to them, although "Unknown" or a blank line
is an acceptable alternative.
(13)Thou shalt name at least 5 generations of males,
and dozens of their cousins with identical names in
order to totally confuse researchers.

Is anyone else researching this branch of the Carpenters? If so, do you have any additional details on Elisha or wife, Deliverance, such as death date, burial, etc. It would be likely to be New York.

Hello Carpenters
The info below was provided me on the Minisink Valley
list-serve. The first two paragraphs refer to Carpenters known to
me. (Silas and Moses W. are brothers.) The third paragraph is a mystery;
Levi Carpenter of Lumberland might be a relative of the Silas
Carpenter and Moses W. Carpenter households...or maybe not.
If anyone here knows about Levi and his family, I'd sure like to
hear it. (Or, if anyone has info on later generations of ANY of these
Carpenters, that would be terrific, too.)

I'm fairly new to the saga of the efforts of various people to find the
final resting place of John and Lois Carpenter. From what I understand, a
pretty thorough search was made of the Marlboro/Guilford areas (maybe
Halifax too) in Windham County where they were married and their children
were born. Right? However, Lois died 7 Mar 1880 in Readsboro, Bennington,
VT. Also, according to the 1870 Census, John and Lois were living in
Winhall, Bennington, VT. So you might want to search for their stones in
that area of Bennington County.

Hello,
I have recently learned for sure that Laban Massey and wife Mary 'Polly'
Carpenter, born about 1781, were the parents of my ggg grandmother Rebecca Massey
Owens. I found Burwell Carpenter's will and learned that he and wife
Elizabeth were Mary Carpenter's parents. I would like to learn more about Burwell and
his family, and would also like to know if anyone knows Elizabeth's maiden
name or anything about her family.
I would appreciate any information!
Thank you!

While I'm grateful to Jim for his thoughtfulness in passing along the tip
concerning the book on eBay--Louis W. Flanders, SIMEON IDE: YEOMAN, FREEMAN,
PIONEER PRINTER (1931)--my experience with the book causes me to warn against
purchasing it. It is available in the genealogy collections of many of the larger
urban libraries and on FHL film. But beyond that, it is quite
unreliable--even as it concerns its main focus, the Ide family--and should be approached
with great caution.

Does anyone show a marriage record in the Whitley, Knox, Bell counties area in KY or TN for a Jeremiah Carpenter and a Polly Unknown? I have Jerry /Jeremiah married four times:
1. Elizabeth Hamblen Rose, m.29 Nov 1868 in Whitley Co. KY.
2. Obedience "Biddy" Wilson, m. 27 Oct 1883 in Campbell Co. TN. She is listed as Jerry's wife also on the 1900 Whitley Co. census. Also lists her as having 8 children, 6 still alive.
3. Polly Unknown is listed as Jerry's wife on the 1910 Whitley co. KY census. She is listed there as 44 years old & born in KY. They are in the South America precinct of Whitley, page 143A, 23/24. It also appears that the enumerator has listed the number of times married by the names: it's very hard to read but it looks like this is Jerry's 4th marriage and Polly's 3rd marriage. The number of years married is listed as 10 by Jerry's name and 2 by Polly's! It looks as though the enumerator meant to put 2 children/ 2 living, and got them in the wrong column.
4. By the 1920 & 30 censuses, Jerry is with his last wife Ollie or Olie Lawson. He died in 1944. I also don't have a record of when or where this last marriage took place.
Any assistance with this family would be most helpful!
Pat H., Jerry's gr-gr-gr-grandaughter.
FYI:
I just ran across this old family history with the Carpenter's
from England to Rehobeth, Ma.
They have places they are from on the page, I hope it helps, the seller may answer questions as well.
The url is:

Or search for item number 2992627578 in the search box.
I hope it helps someone find their family info.

I am researching the CARPENTER family of Guilford, VT. Can you answer the following questions on John CARPENTER's family? I will eventually want to prove this information using published sources and may ask you about yours.
a.. When was he born (about 1790 to 1805)?
b.. When did he die?
c.. Did he marry Lois GROVER January 09, 1827 in Guilford , Windham, VT?
d.. Was she born LOIS GROVER 13 Sep 1808 in Guilford, Windham , VT? Did she die . 17 Mar 1880 in Halifax ,Windham, VT? Was she the daughter of Elijah GROVER and Lydia GALLUP?
e.. Was there a daughter Lydia CARPENTER born to John CARPENTER and Lois GROVER 29 Jun 1853 in Guilford,Windham,VT? If so, her father John would have been in his 50s or 60s.
f.. Did daughter Lydia die in 1867 (age 14) or did she marry Daniel CARY in 1868, move to MA and die after 1920?
g.. Who were John CARPENTER's parents?

I am trying to identify the parents of Catherine CARPENTER. She was born
24 Mar 1802 probably in Albany or Schoharie County, NY, but I have various
places of birth depending upon the source (below). She married Charles
DIBBLE and moved to Broome County, NY. She married second Mr. BRINK. Died
1897 in Broome County.
She was born in:
Schoharie County, NY (her Death Record)
Albany County, NY (her obituruay).
NY (1850 census)
NY (1860 census)
PA (1865 NYS Census)
NY (son Alonzo DIBBLE's mother 1880)
NY (son Jabez DIBBLE's mother 1880)
NY (son Akin DIBBLE's mother 1880)
