<< ... Thomas Carpenter b. 16 Aug 1687 and Hannah Alsop, b. 8 Jan 1691 >>
For corrections to this, see my Carpenter Mailing List posting of Wednesday,
12 March 2003 ("Re: Genealogy Help Needed" [file/volume 33]).
<< Joseph Sr. b. 1635/36 who m. his 2nd cousin Hannah Carpenter, b. Apr 1640,
dt. of Wm. & Abigail of Rehobeth >>
Despite repeated assertions that Joseph and Hannah's respective fathers were
first cousins, the precise relationship of the two immigrant Carpenters
(William1 of Providence and William2 of Rehoboth) has not been established.
Certain highly respected genealogists consider them to have been related only
by marriage. Keep an eye out for an upcoming article in THE NEW ENGLAND
HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL REGISTER entitled, "Three John Carpenters (and a
Surfeit of Sarahs): A Chain of Mistaken Identities." The article's appendix
contains an extended footnote (no. 79 or thereabout) devoted to this issue.
Another extended footnote (no. 82 or thereabout) refutes the generally held
belief that Providence William married Elizabeth Arnold in England and that
their son Joseph was born there about 1635.
<< Joseph was son of Wm Carpenter b. 1608/11, m. Elizabeth Arnold b. 23 Nov
1611, son of Richard Carpenter, etc. >>
There is no "etc." Again, repeated statements to the contrary
notwithstanding, the parentage of Richard Carpenter of Amesbury has not been
proved, nor has that of William1 of Shalbourne, Wherwell, and the BEVIS
(1638). All that elaborate Carpenter ancestry you've seen (English to about
1300, French to about 1000) is groundless. See THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST,
70(1995):193-204, and the first of the two aforementioned footnotes in the
soon-to-be-published (in 3-6 months) NEHG REGISTER article.

Is this only for male descendents via only male progenitors?
My ggggg grandfather was one Isaiah Carpenter (1735-1805 or 1809). He was
born in Reheboth, MA and moved to Shaftsbury, Bennington County, Vermont. My
descendency from his line is all through the daughters of the daughters. I
also gave birth to three daughters--no sons. My grandsons are the first two
males whom I could approach about making a DNA contribution. Would this be
helpful?

p.s. Because I have an old operating system I do not have web access. So
could you please e-mail me the guidelines? Thank you.

I am trying to restructure my 1800 Carpenter census information for Providence, Rhode Island to separate the individuals by the area of residence. Does any one have the census area page brake-down for Providence County ?
