Hello,
A light rain began to fall last night ... The fires are settling down.
All fires within San Diego City limits are out or contained. The two major fires left in San Diego County that are not contained are expected to be contained soon.
Over 2,150 single family homes and mobile homes lost (>$750 million in just that one catagory), hundreds if not thousands of smaller buildings, 16 dead (including one Firefighter), 5 missing, and over 275,833 acres burned in just ONE fire (The Cedar Fire) with over 400,000 total acres chared in San Diego County.
Thousands of animals are displaced and being gathered together. Those animals injured are being cared for or being put down if needed. Many people are donating money and supplies to the Animal shelters. Many of the pets seem in shock or bewildered. Many just want to be touched or held. It broke my heart to be there and harder to leave. The shelters could use donations or money

Thousands of people have lost their homes and are being put up at homes of friends, neighbors and strangers. Hotels and motel have opened their doors to the homeless.

Your Donations Help
Many families woke up in the early morning hours and fled with scant minutes to get to safety. Many lost everything. Donations of toothbrushes, combs and other basic gear are being donated. Children are being given Teddy Bears to hold. The children in pacticular seem so lost at what happened so fast. Even if you could spare $5.00 this would help some one.
The American Red Cross advises that persons wishing to donate money to the fire disaster relief fund can call 1-800-HELPNOW or visit their web site at http://www.sdarc.org/disaster. The Red Cross is not set up to accept donations of food.
PLEASE note that 100% of donations to the San Diego Red Cross will be used in San Diego county.

Many people brought the Firefighters underwear, pillows, phone cards and such to their base camps. Restaurants and such are providing food at no charge.
Most of the fire fighters came unprepared for extended visits. These men and women are heroes. Much, much more would have been lost with out them. God Bless Them All!

Before I left my work last Wednesday night. I had 3 wards of 42 who no longer who had homes to go to. Four juvenile's parents status were unknown. Many of the 12 to 17 year old male juvenile delinquints wanted to go help fight the fires. They felt helpless and wanted to do something to help. Some took their replacement toothbrushes and tried to send them out in the county mail. Despite their "badness" many wanted to help.
I have seen combat, I have participated in some carnage. Never have I seen such devastation over such vast areas. My father compared it to the destruction he saw in Germany that he saw at the end of World War Two.
I see strength in people who help others. They often know that but for the Grace of God goes me.
May God Grant all of you Health, Safety and Peace.
A more humbled man,
John R. Carpenter
