Is there any chance that these Carpenters were in Franklin Co., GA, instead
of NC? I have a John who married Ester Canady/Kennedy in Franklin Co, GA,
and moved there from NC....probably Moore, Co, NC, and on to Mississippi.
Just thought it might be an over look....wish we could connect?

Thank you, Virginia
I too would like the information asked for by Jennie, as I have a connection between a Carpenter in AL and the Carpenters in New York.

I would like to subscribe to "Carpenter and Related Family Historical Journal" but don't know where to subscribe as I can't locate a copy.
Secondly, I'm also looking for a specific article in it. It is in Vol.5, Winter 1994, No. 8, P. 517. It proves the lineage of the Virginia Carpenters to the New York Carpenters.
If I can't prove the lineage through this particular journal, maybe someone can tell me where else to find a connection.
Judith Carpenter, who was married to Jacob Shawver, is my ggggrandmother.
Thanks so much.

I am trying to identify the location of a wedding reception on April 25,
1953 between Sarah Fell Carpenter and George Carey. She was the daughter of
Bruce Nelson Carpenter and the grandaughter of Benjamin Gardner and Harriet
(Price) Carpenter. Benjamin Carpenter was the brother of Robert "Ruly"
Carpenter and Walter Samuel Carpenter (Du Pont). The mansion in the slides
is a beige stucco with a red tile roof. A porch wraps around one side. A
driveway is on the other. There is a formal garden with, I think, yellow
flowers.
Does anyone know if photographs of the exteriors of Ruly and Walter's
homes might have been published? I think there was one published of
Walter's but I can't remember the title of the book. I have access to the
recent book on Walter but there is only an interior photograph.
My aunt was one of the people attending but she doesn't remember where it
was.

Hello John Laird!
You are right. John L. Carpenter of NH provided the data to make the
correction on this family.
It took over six years that I know of to make the correct connection on this
small branch of the Carpenter Family.
Because of sharing data and working with each other we found the answer in
this small part of the puzzle.
THANK YOU to Art Carpenter, John E. Proctor, John Laird and John L.
Carpenter for your efforts on this "little twig!" It finally all came
together.

Dear Folks,
I was reminded of an idea that one group of Carpenters did when they had a Family Reunion.
At this Carpenter Family Reunion T-shirts were given out. Each person had a personal four generation pedigree on their back and on the left front was "Carpenter Reunion," the date, and their first and last name.
Iron on transfer paper was used to prepare the shirts. It took a bit of effort with a computer and ink jet printer, but they were a hit and a great way to know who was who!
They also used a poloroid camera (digital camera might be better) to attach pictures to names on a family poster.
I thought that this may give you another idea for your next reunion!

Samuel Carpenter was from Goshen, Orange, NY.
BENJAMIN GARDNER CARPENTER a contractor and merchant, of Wilkes-Barre,
was born at Plains, Luzerne Co., Pa., July 2, 1827, a son of Samuel and

In the New York Herald it was reported on Wednesday, August 31, 1859, that
Mary Carpenter died "at Rochester, on Saturday, August 20" "wife of Daniel
Carpenter, in the 71st year of her age."
Daniel Carpenter of PortChester (Rye township), Westchester County, NY wrote
his will on the 5th day of July 1859. In it he refers to his wife Mary and
states what should occur if she "survives me." Daniel Carpenter died "at
PortChester, NY, on Friday, June 15" 1860, "in the 83d year of his age." This
is reported in the New York Herald issue of June 16, 1860.
Daniel's will was probated in WestChester and there is no mention of Mary
Carpenter in any of the papers. She must have died between the writing of he
will and the recording of the will.
Does anyone know of a specific relationship between the Mary Carpenter who
died in Rochester and this family of PortChester, NY? I believe that she is
the wife of Daniel Carpenter of PortChester. Two of their surviving children
at the time of Daniel's death are living in Brooklyn, NY. There is a son
William Carpenter who is not found at that time.
Last names used as middle names in the next generation that are unaccounted
for as yet are Byron and Greeley. Perhaps one of these was Mary's maiden
name.
Thanks for any leads.

Hello Carpenters:
I want to thank John Laird for his lucid and info-packed posting about
the likely and unlikely relations of Sylvanus Carpenter. This is the kind
of posting we should all try to emulate: facts, references, clear
distinction of what's known and what's inferred, and sincere query for
contradictory info if any is known. While highly skeptical of hypothesis in
a prior post, there is not a hint of acrimony or other untoward attitude.
Thanks, John Laird.

The post to the Carpenter list yesterday by Jack Frosty about the ancestry of
Sylvanus Carpenter, cites past sources that list three possible fathers for
him -- Jeremiah, Joseph, or Copeland Carpenter, all listed as sons of
Jeremiah Carpenter, son of Timothy Carpenter of Pittstown in Rensselaer
County, New York -- featured in the Charles Lorain Carpenter book about
Timothy and his descendants. Yesterday's post suggests that while Sylvanus
was originally listed as a descendant of Joseph, he now should be considered
possibly a descendant of Copeland -- as Joseph and Jeremiah Jr. don't seem to
fit.
I am a descendant of Joseph, who died in 1869 in McHenry County, Illinois.
Joseph left a will that does not include Sylvanus -- but does list nine other
children still living at the time of his death. Jeremiah Jr., shown in New
York through the 1855 state census and was in Fillmore County, Minnesota by
the 1860 federal census -- and appears to have had three sons, Warren, Niles,
and William. Sylvanus never appears to have been with him. The only
Copeland Carpenter shown in New York records is John Copeland Carpenter, son
of Jeremiah Sr.'s son George W., born about 1823. The only one of his three
known children that was a son was Henry, born ca 1856. Sylvanus does not
appear to be tied into this line. All of Jeremiah's male children seem to
have moved to Erie County by the 1820's from Onondaga County, New York -- and
there is no Solomon, listed as Sylvanus' father, in this line.
The Charles L. Carpenter book is, with regard to Copeland and Niles being
sons of the original Jeremiah, quite probably in error. There is no record
of either in any New York records that place them at an age that would make
them old enough to be sons of Jeremiah. Copeland was Jeremiah's grandson by
George W., and Niles was his grandson by Jeremiah, Jr. I have text notes on
these families if anyone is interested, and believe that Sylvanus must be of
another entire Carpenter line. I'd be happy to consider any alternative
theories about what I've said, but I believe it's the best analysis of the
facts I have. I'm pleased it was brought up on the list, because there's
been no where to post this information about this issue.

BENJAMIN GARDNER CARPENTER a contractor and merchant, of Wilkes-Barre,
was born at Plains, Luzerne Co., Pa., July 2, 1827, a son of Samuel and
Nancy (Gardner) Carpenter, natives of Orange county, N.J., and of English
origin. The father was a farmer by occupation, who reared a family of
four children, viz.: Benjamin G., Martha, Kate and Emery. Our subject
was reared on a farm, educated in the schools of Plains and Carbondale,
Pa., and after serving an apprenticeship in 1845 he became a partner of
Theron Burnett, in a store near where the Osterhout building now stands.
After a time they moved to North Franklin street, and from there to West
Market street, where Mr. Carpenter purchased Mr. Burnett's interest, and
took in, as a partner, his brother, Emery Carpenter. In 1873 they
erected the building now occupied by the firm at No. 51 West Market
street, and after a time our subject purchased his brother Emery's
interest, and admitted Francis Dunsmore and A.H. Mulford as partners. At
Mr. Mulford's death, in 1875, Walter S. Carpenter, eldest son of our
subject, was admitted into the firm, and later the two younger sons, B.

These are the "du Pont" Carpenters from Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Honor
----I started by standing outside behind the house and,
with a five pound potato sack in each hand, extend my
arms straight out to my sides and hold them there as
long as I can.
After a few weeks I moved up to ten pound potato
sacks, then fifty pound potato sacks and finally I got
to where I could lift a hundred pound potato sack in
each hand and hold my arms straight out for more than
a full minute!
Next, I started putting a few potatoes in the sacks,
but I would caution you not to overdo it at this
level.
