Is there a Benjamin or Benjamin S. anywhere in this line? My ancestor
Benjamin [Sam(p)son?] Carpenter was born ca 1770 (in NC?). Maybe it was VA,
I don't know. He married in ca 1800-02 to Mildred "Millie". They had
children in SC and in AL, moving to southeastern AL ca 1820. I don't know if
Benjamin was a 'regular' or an 'Upchurch' Carpenter in NC, or if he was a
Zimmerman from PA>VA>NC. My Benjamin possibly was related to the
Baily/Bailey Carpenters of Burke Co GA, as Benjamin's first son was William
Bailey Carpenter.
Thanks,
Rick Carpenter
Hi all:
I'm researching family of (and am a descendant of) John F. Carpenter, born in VA in 1770/80 and who lived in Greenbrier Co., VA, until about 1830 and then moved to Cabell Co., VA (now Putnam Co., WVa), where he died in 1845. His father may be Thomas Carpenter (son of Solomon Carpenter) who migrated to North Carolina in the later 1700s and died in Nash Co., NC, in c 1803. Is this the same Thomas as Thomas "Jack" Carpenter, whose birth and death dates as well as parents (Solomon and Sudna) seem to be the same? I realize the confusion of names and generations for that period, but wondered if anybody has found better data than what I've seen. Is this Thomas Carpenter likely of the family mentioned here recently about NC Carpenters? Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I have talked to Terri before. Can you tell me how my John Carpenter who
married Ester Kennedy/Cannady in Franklin Co. GA and wound up in
Carrrolton, Ms, in the Black Hawk, Carrol Co. , MS, area connects to this
bunch of Carpenters. Their daughter was Sarah Carpenter, who married james
Minyard. They all had come out of NC, too, and had an abundant number of
Owens, Johns, and Staleys in the family. Are we the same batch as the ones
you just mentioned. We supposedly descend from the Thomas Owen who was
shot during the Revolutionary War while holding his baby in his arms at his
home?
I would be interested on getting this information straight. Thanks so much.

I received some very good questions. I wish I knew the answers, but I
don't. So best I can do is post them and hope someone out there has an
answer:
re: Reuben - Thomas & John (born circa 1776-1785)
1. Is there evidence that they were brothers other than the diary which also
says that they were sons of Abigail JORDAN?, ie, can we believe one
without the other?
ANSWER: NO evidence that I have says they were brothers, "only if" they
are the sons in the diary. Circumstancial evidence is the passing down of
the names Reuben, Thomas, John & Zachariah for the next 2-3 generations.
2. This is one of the things that bothers me. The Thomas CARPENTER of Nash
Co is a good fit to be the father of Reuben, John, and Thomas; but
according to the diary Abigail's CARPENTER husband was killed in the war.
I can't help but wonder if maybe we're looking at some non-normal
situation such as a divorce, desertion, or bigamous relationship. Plus,
the notion of a 30 year old woman with five kids marrying a 20 year old
guy just doesn't ring true with me unless there were some really unusual
circumstances.
RESPONSE: Good point. Maybe a lister out there has something more concrete
they can share with us??

re: RUEBEN & THOMAS CARPENTERs
A few years ago, I gave my original information to John for his CD. Since
that time, I have been able to gather and analyze the records. I
colaborated with Terry Carpenter (authored works on Southern Carpenter
lines) and also with Steve Martanak (reasearcher of the NC Carpenters).
There seems to be some confusion over the Thomas CARPENTERS who were all
born early 1800s. Let me see if I can clear this up. Originally a work was
done by Ms. Ross which most folks took for granted. If one looks at the
records recorded in Henry Co GA, you will see each time Thomas (the brother
of James Warren Carpenter) is mentioned, he is listed as Thomas "M."
Carpenter. His father was also a Thomas, the brother of Reuben Carpenter,
Sr. The fathers were born circa 1776-1785. Each named a son Thomas. The
had another brother named John. John born the same era had a son named
Thomas also.
1. One was born 1800/1801 and was the son of Rueben of Edgefield SC
(b.1776-1780). This Thomas Carpenter was in Chickasaw, MS in the 1840 &
1850 census. Children: Rebecca, Caroline, Lucinda & Timothy.
2. The other one was Thomas "M." CARPENTER of Henry County GA who was born
1810 and had land transactions in Henry Co GA and had a brother James Warren
Carpenter. His father was Thomas (b. abt 1785) the brother of Reuben. This
Thomas "M" (note only 9 yrs difference in birth from #1 Thomas of MS) went
to Randolph Co ALA about 1835. His brother James Warren married Sarah
Abigail HARLIN who was bonded as a child by Thomas "M"s father, Thomas
Carpenter of Henry Co. GA.
Children: Mary L/E, William Thomas, Elisabeth, Lucinda, James R. John W.,
Joseph, Lewis, Martha, Zachariah, Robert A, Nathan .
Luckilly, Thomas "M"s daughter, Elizabeth married John HOLLOWAY and
descendant Bev KEY noted a Bible record.
3. The other Thomas was born about 1801 lived in Lincoln Co. GA and Coweta
GA and was the son of John CARPENTER. This Thomas had a son named Thomas
Washington Carpenter b. abt 1832 who went to Marion Co. ALA according to
descendant Greg NABORS.
To make things more confusing, Reuben Sr. and Thomas Sr. (the elder
brothers) both named sons Reuben. There was Reuben Jr. who went to TX.
There was Reuben L. Carpenter who followed his brother Thomas "M" to
Alabama.
It was "suspected" that the Thomas Carpenter b. circa 1780-85 was the son of
Thomas "Jack" Carpenter, but NOT proven. It was suspected the same Thomas
along with his brother Rueben Sr. were sons of Abigail JORDAN and an UNKNOWN
Carpenter but also NOT proven.

My Dad's cousin (my first cousin once removed) Byron Carpenter,
went to the Lord Friday evening 8 Mar 2002
in Washington, Mo.
He was 103 years old and still mentally sharp. He entered a
nursing home last year as he was getting a little weak but was enjoying
good health.
Byron carried on the Carpenter sense of humor and I had a number of
good visits with him and was so pleased to get
to know him. He always insisted on getting dressed up for company at
the home - silk shirt, silk tie etc.
We will miss him and I have to say he was a real Gentleman.
My sincere thanks to every one of you who helped me along the way
with the Carpenter family tree. Also my
thanks for all of you who sent Byron Christmas cards.
Byron found the genealogy very interesting, in particular, finding
out how his Dad, Edward Chauncey, got his middle
name. It was supplied to us by Jane B. and Byron was very pleased to
learn that the name came from Chauncey G.
Carpenter of Athens Ohio.
I assume that he will now begin looking up all these ancestors and
having long conversations with them - which should
keep him busy for a long time.
Unfortunately, Byron was our last male Carpenter having lost his
only son last year (who had no sons).
Sincerely,
Sally Carpenter Warfield, St. Louis

Hi, I am new to this list. I have some Carpenters in my line that lived in Adams county, IL. Lorenzo Carpenter b abt 1820 had at least 4 children. James b abt 1846, Ananias b 1849, Franklin b abt 1852, and Melvina b abt 1864. The offspring ended up in NW MO by 1900. There are a lot of Carpenters in Adams county, IL in the 1800s. I'd like to find out where they came from.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for some long lost Carpenter relatives from Nebraska (probably
along the Platte). The reason that I know some still live, or at least
lived in Nebraska in the early 1980's is that my dad was standing in front
of the Johnson Space Center in Texas. (He was from Ruthven, Palo Alto
County, Iowa.) A gentleman approached him and asked him if he was a
Carpenter and from Nebraska. Dad said yes, he was a Carpenter, but from
Iowa. The other guy said that the town he lived in Nebraska has a lot of
Carpenters and they all look alike, and Dad looked just like them.
Later, as my dad told me this story, I asked him which town in Nebraska
this was, since I now live in Nebraska too. He could not remember, but
knew the town started with a "G" and along the Platt River.
I asked Dad if he knew of any family in Nebraska and he said yes, he had a
great-uncle that had moved to Nebraska. He had lost touch with that
family. Since I have been doing family genealogy, I have discovered that
one of Dad's uncle's was born in Nance County, Nebraska, where Geno is
located. After a few years of trying to homestead my great-grandparents
returned to the Viola Township, Audubon County, Iowa.
Now within our Carpenter family over 90% of my first cousins all look like
Carpenters, so there is a strong family trait there.
Does any one out there have any information on a Carpenter family living in
a Nebraska town that starts with "G" and there is a strong family
resemblance among the family members?
A side note, my Grandpa Carpenter also liked to write poetry. Is this a
family trait?
I know this is a long shot, but we would not love genealogy if we did not
like long shots. :)

How interesting... my Carpenters came from Nebraska(Platte River) and
Kansas
. In the early part of the 1900s a few married Pavelitich's and I have 6
generations of poems written by Carpenters in that area, some of which were
published. I do not know anything about the people mentioned in what you
wrote, but would be very interested in talking to whoever feels they can
claim the album, because I think I might be connected, even distantly, to
them. Good luck in finding it a home!
