I was told by a Carpenter cousin that a Frances Carpenter designed the
picture of Lincoln which is now on one of our bills.
One of Philadelphia's buildings which had already been built at the time of
the Signing of the Constitution was named Carpenter. This ma y not come
under famous as we know it today, but I like it better.
Francis Biknell Carpenter was the paiter of the Abraham Lincoln pictures and
a lot more here is his line.
Cartpenter Hall in Philadelphis was not a surnamr Carpenter but a union hall
ilke from what I was told.

A 1866 hand-tinted lithograph is titled President Lincoln and His
Cabinet,
Reading the Emancipation Proclamation.
The lithograph was published by Edward Herline (lithography company,
active
c. 1840-1870), after Francis Bicknell Carpenter and an unidentified
artist.

Picture and the following: From Frank Carpenter, Six Months at the White
House:
"It had got to be," [Lincoln told Carpenter], "midsummer, 1862. Things
had
gone from bad to worse, until I felt we had reached the end of our rope
on the
plan of operations we had been pursuing; that we had about played our
last
card, and must change our tactics, or lose the game! I now determined
upon
the adoption of the emancipation policy; and, without consultation with,
or the
knowledge of the Cabinet, I prepared the original draft of the
proclamation,
and, after much anxious thought, called a Cabinet meeting upon the
subject.
This was the last of July, or the first part of the month of August,
1862."
(The exact date he did not remember.) "This Cabinet meeting took place,
I
think, upon a Saturday. All were present, excepting Mr. Blair, the
Postmaster-General, who was absent at the opening of the discussion, but
came in subsequently. I said to the Cabinet that I had resolved upon
this
step, and had not called them together to ask their advice, but to lay
the
subject-matter of a proclamation before them; suggestions as to which
would
be in order, after they had heard it read. Mr. Lovejoy," said he, "was
in error
when he informed you that it excited no comment, excepting on the part
of
Secretary Seward. Various suggestions were offered. Secretary Chase
wished the language stronger in reference to the arming of the blacks.
Mr. Blair, after he came in, deprecated the policy, on the ground that
it would
cost the Administration the fall elections. Nothing, however, was
offered that
I had not already fully anticipated and settled in my own mind, until
Secretary Seward spoke. He said in substance: `Mr. President, I approve
of the
proclamation, but I question the expediency of its issue at this
juncture. The
depression of the public mind, consequent on our repeated reverses, is
so
great that I fear the effect of so important a step. It may be viewed as
the
last measure of an exhausted government, a cry for help; the government
stretching its hand to Ethiopia, instead of Ethiopia stretching her
hands to the government.' His idea, said the President,
"was that it would be considered our last shriek, on the retreat."
(This was his precise expression.) "'Now,' continued Mr. Seward, `while
I
approve the measure, I suggest, sir, that you postpone its issue, until
you can give it to the country supported by military success, instead of
issuing it, as would be the case now, upon the greatest disasters of the
war.'"
Mr. Lincoln continued: "The wisdom of the view of the Secretary of
State struck me with very great force. It was an aspect of the case
that, in
all my thought upon the subject, I had entirely overlooked. The result
was
that I put the draft of the proclamation aside, as you do your sketch
for a picture, waiting for a victory. From time to time I added or
changed a line, touching it up here and there, anxiously watching the
progress of events.
Well the next news we had was of Pope's disaster, at Bull Run. Things
looked
darker than ever. Finally came the week of the battle of Antietam. I
determined to wait no longer. The news came, I think, on Wednesday, that
the advantage was on our side. I was then staying at the Soldier's home,
(three miles out of Washington.) Here I finished writing the second
draft of
the preliminary proclamation; came up on Saturday; called the Cabinet
together to hear it, and it was published the following Monday."
At the final meeting of September 20th, another interesting incident
occurred
in connection with Secretary Seward. The President had written the
important
part of the proclamation in these words:--
"That, on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand
eight
hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State, or
designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in
rebellion
against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward and forever
FREE;
and the Executive Government of the United States, including the
military
and naval authority thereof, will recognize the freedom of such persons,
and
will do no act to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts
they
shall make for their actual freedom." "When I finished reading this
paragraph,"
resumed Mr. Lincoln, "Mr. Seward stopped me, and said, `I think, Mr.
President, that you should insert after the word "recognize'" in that
sentence,
the words "and maintain."
Also from Carpenter:
Mr. Lincoln thereupon said: "Mr. Thompson, the people of Great Britain,
and
of other foreign governments, were in one great error in reference to
this
conflict. They seemed to think that, the moment I was President, I had
the
power to abolish slavery, forgetting that, before I could have any power
whatever, I had to take the oath to support the Constitution of the
United
States, and execute the laws as I found them. When the Rebellion broke
out,
my duty did not admit of a question. That was, first, by all strictly
lawful
means to endeavor to maintain the integrity of the government. I did not
consider that I had the right to touch the 'State' institution of
'Slavery'
until all other measures for restoring the Union had failed. The
paramount idea
of the Constitution is the preservation of the Union. It may not be
specified
in so many words, but that this was the idea of its founders is evident;
for,
without the Union, the constitution would be worthless. It seems clear,
then,
that in the last extremity, if any local institution threatened the
existence
of the Union, the Executive could not hesitate as to his duty. In our
case, the
moment came when I felt that slavery must die that the nation might
live! ...
"Many of my strongest supporters urged Emancipation before I thought it
indispensible, and, I may say, before I thought the country was ready
for it.
It is my conviction that, had the proclamation been issued even six
months
earlier than it was, public sentiment would not have sustained it... A
man
watches his pear-tree day after day, impatient for the ripening of the
fruit.
Let him attempt to force the process, and he may spoil both fruit and
tree.
But let him patiently wait, and the ripe pear at length falls into his
lap!
We have seen this great revolution in public sentiment slowly but surely
progressing, so that, when final action came, the opposition was not
strong
through to defeat the purpose. I can now solemnly assert," he concluded,
"that
I have a clear conscience in regard to my action on this momentous
question.
I have done what no man could have helped doing, standing in my place."
end notes.

----How bout John Carpenter the Director/Composer
-K
This is all I have goten on John Carpenter movie director. I am awaiting
further info from his Press secretary.
Descendants of John Carpenter
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 CARPENTER was born Abt. 1948 in Carthage, New York. He married
SANDY KING.
Notes for JOHN CARPENTER:
Born in Carthage, New York, and raised in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Carpenter
was captivated by movies, especially Westerns, as a youngster. The son of a
college music professor, he attended Western Kentucky University, then
enrolled in the University of Southern California's School of Cinema.
Notes for SANDY KING:
So her training in film was complete when, in 1984, she first went to work
for director John Carpenter on his Oscar nominated film, Starman, and then
on Big Trouble In Little China. He was so impressed with her knowledge of
film and understanding of his vision that he arranged for her to produce his
subsequent films, They Live, Prince of Darkness, In The Mouth Of Madness,
Village Of The Damned and most recently, Vampires. She also produced the
Showtime anthology film, John Carpenter Presents Body Bags. The couple
married, and King continues to develop upcoming projects for their
production company as well as continuing her own work as a writer.
A native of Los Angeles, King started her studies at the respected Westlake
School for Girls, continuing to UCLA as a pictorial arts major, but also
earning degrees in theatre arts and English. These various studies melded
perfectly into her evolving work in film. She started in animation, working
on the Oscar winning Anti-Matter.
Since few people have instant access to the film field, King had to support
herself in the pre period. Avoiding the waitering work many others choose,
she earned a living painting platform shoes for such megastars as David
Bowie and Elton John. Before those star associations, however, she painted
pornographic shoes, and this work was the foot fetish sensation of the
annual Pimps and Hookers Ball, a credit she admits to with humorous pride.
King is active in support of many of her political, scientific and
educational commitments, taking a leadership role in such organizations as
the Hollywood Womens Political Committee, the Muses of the California
Museum of Science and Industry and the End Hunger Network.

I've been able to connect to former President, James

The obvious one that comes to mind is Karen Carpenter,

Any help? Thanks!

I had help inputting data and sometimes typos happen.
RIN 57396 should have the name Samuel B. Hinzman b. 1839 and not
James Hinzman as noted on the CE CD 2001.
Thanks for catching this!

Descendants of John Augusta Carpenter
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN AUGUSTA3 CARPENTER (RUEBEN LEE2, THOMAS "JACK"1) was born August
02, 1829 in Edgefield , SC, and died January 25, 1881 in Gilmer , Upshur,
TX.. He married SARAH COPE September 05, 1850 in Gilmer , Upshur, TX.. She
was born December 20, 1828 in Alabama, and died January 19, 1885 in Gilmer ,
Upshur, TX..
Notes for JOHN AUGUSTA CARPENTER:
Hello John,
I just dug in one of my packed boxes and pulled out some of my research
papers. I have a couple of family pages given me by Lena Bishop of
Gilmer, Texas. She may be deceased now, I haven't talked to her in
years. Anyhow her records showed that John Augusta Carpenter had eight
siblings, including Charlsey who married Samuel Cope. It also has
Rueben Carpenter, Jr. and Leatha as parents of Gus and Charlcey. It has
Rueben Carpenter, Sr. and wife Mary Butler as the grandparents. Her
sources were quoted as research records in Edgefield County,S.C., Upshur
County Texas and Conway Ark. She further provided me a family sheet of
John Augusta and Sarah Cope Carpenter. She quoted her sources on that
sheet as "Carpenter Family Bible in possession of Lena Bishop" and
"Upshur County Courthouse Records." Hope this information is useful.
If you wish copies of these sheets let me know.
The deed records of Upshur County have deeds from Sarah Cope's father
Henry Cope into Augustus Carpenter. That would be a deed from Gus's
father-in-law. Henry Cope was married to Rebecca Hasty. I do note that
that name has been picked up by many researchers and posted on the web.
I do see a lot of information published that is not supported. I think
I might be guilty of filling in a blank to force closure. The name
Hasty does have support in my files. I searched for 10 years for her
maiden name and found it accidentally in a stack of papers given to me
by distant cousins in Virginia. She is named on a letter written to a
young lady preparing a school paper about her ancestors. After seeing
the name there I went back to the 1800 - 1820 census records of Richmond
County, NC and found several Hasty families on the same census pages
with the Copes. Also a search of land grant records in Alabama show a
Needham Hasty acquiring a tract of land next to that acquired by Henry
Cope. So I felt confident enough to put it on my charts and passed it
on and everyone picked it up. I don't know if you like such detail but
I wanted to give you the sources with the names I pass to you. Henry
Cope was one of the names in the will and probate records for his
deceased father Samuel Cope which was filed in Pike County, Alabama.
The will might not still be in the courthouse there because Peggy Wiley
(3717 Lenwood Dr., Amarillo, TX 79109) who provided me a copy some 10
years ago said that the records department was in total disorder. I
have passed that document on and try to always give credit to the
generous Peggy who is a second generation Cope researcher and I can't
express enough appreciation for her sharing ways. Henry Cope is also
listed on Creek Indian War records although I have no pension
application from him. He was one of the first settlers of what is now
Camp County, Texas. He did get a grant of 40 acres from the State of
Texas and his name survives today on the plat maps of Camp County. He
arrived in 1849 according to the letter to the young school girl. His
name appears frequently on the deed records of Upshur County, actually
on the first page of "Book 1." I use "about 1863 as his date of death
because the tax rolls for that year list his land ownership in the name
"Estate of Henry Cope." Also based on the tax rolls I assume that
Rebecca probably died about two years after Henry. Because the War of
the Northern Aggression was going on and following was reconstruction
with uneducated people in the southern courthouses, many records were
lost for that period. I want desperately to get my hands on the
abstracts of title for the lands that were owned by Henry Cope to see if
his last will and testament is there.
That covers Henry and Rebecca. As mentioned above Henry is named in the
will of Samuel Cope. Samuel's marriage to Elizabeth Everitt is
documented in N. Carolina marriage records. He and his family are
listed on the census records of Richmond County prior to 1830. I have
no support for naming Samuel's parents. I have seen them on charts but
there is no support and I will not put a guess in my records. Daughters
of the American Revolution approved membership applications provide
support for the parents of Elizabeth Everitt. Her father was Thomas
Everitt who filed for a pension application for service in the
Revolutionary war. He was born born March 14, 1742 at Queens Annes,
County, MD according to the applications. He died at Anson County, NC
(now Richmond) on Feb 6, 1837 according to the DAR application.
Elizabeth's mother was Elizabeth Covington born 1745 in Maryland and
died 1820 in Richmond County according to the DAR application.
I can't put my hands on Charlcy Carpenter's records now. We moved
recently and things are not back to normal. I do know that there is a
researcher who lives in Pittsburg and is a Carpenter descendant. I will
try to forward contact information to you.
I do hope this is helpful and enjoy sharing the information.

Notes for SARAH COPE:
I am descended from Sarah's brother William Henry Harrison Cope. their
brother Samuel married Gus Carpenter's sister Charlcy. They are all
buried at Willow Oak in northern Upshur County. W.H.H, Samuel and Gus
were in Co. H, 18th Texas Infantry. They are all mentioned in John
Porter's manuscript which covers most of the day to day history of Co.
H. They all also enumerated on a list of all the men in Co. H. That
list survived folded up in W.H.H. Cope's family bible. Keep up the good
work because I enjoy following it on the web.

Having recently been reminded of the ease with which genealogical errors take
on a life of their own, robustly surviving in the face of corrections, I
realized I had never posted the following items online, where they might have
a chance of supplanting the inaccuracies with which they compete.
DANIEL4 CARPENTER, born 8 October 1669, son of William3 Carpenter and his
second wife, Miriam "Saile" (dau. of Edward Sale/Sarle of Weymouth and
Rehoboth), married at Rehoboth, 15 April 1695, BETHIAH3 BLISS. Daniel's
sister MIRIAM4 CARPENTER, born 16 October 1674, married at Rehoboth, 23 June
1691, JONATHAN3 BLISS, Bethiah's brother.
Bethiah and Jonathan Bliss's father is easily and accurately identified as
JONATHAN2 BLISS, son of Thomas1 and Dorothy (Wheatlie) Bliss of Braintree and
Rehoboth. The oft-repeated claim that Jonathan2's wife (i.e., Bethiah and
Jonathan3's mother) was MIRIAM HARMON, however, is false. She was, in fact,
neither a Miriam nor a Harmon; there is no record of a Miriam Harmon in New
England during this period. Jonathan2 Bliss's wife was almost certainly a
daughter of George PUFFER of Braintree, Mass., probably named RACHEL. For a
complete discussion of the factors that led to this misidentification and the
evidence supporting its correction, see NEHGR 151(1997):32-37.
JOHN4 CARPENTER, born 19 October 1652--also a son of William3 Carpenter but
by his first wife, Priscilla Bennett--had married probably at Rehoboth, by 19
December 1677 (birth date of first child), REBECCA2 REDWAY, with whom he had
10 children, 8 recorded at Rehoboth, 2 at Woodstock (no John among them).
Rebecca's father is invariably identified correctly as JAMES1 REDWAY--though
his date of burial (31 March 1684) is often confused with that of his son
James2 (28 Oct. 1676). But sloppy research has caused some accounts
(including that on John R. Carpenter's CD) to misidentify James1's wife
(i.e., Rebecca's mother) as MARY WHIPPLE. The facts are these: Mary Whipple
married at Rehoboth, 14 April 1748, as his second wife, CAPT. JAMES3 REDWAY (
John2, James1) (orig. Rehoboth VR, 2:266); the identity of James1 Redway's
wife is unknown.
Brothers SAMUEL3 and ABIAH3 CARPENTER, sons of William2 and Abigail (Briant)
Carpenter, also married daughters of James1 Redway: Samuel m. 25 May 1660,
SARAH REDWAY, and Abiah m. say 1667, MARY REDWAY. As above, the identity of
the Redway sisters' mother is unknown.

After Henry Carpenter of Locking ( will 1526) comes a Robert Carpenter whose
son Robert
was christened in 1550/1 in Locking. This son Robert marries a Margaret
Croxford in 1577 and then resides in nearby Bradfield. There are no more
Locking records for Carpenters. These records are the very earliest for
Carpenters in Berkshire. Henry Carpenter whose son was William Carpenter c.
1576
was likely the brother of Robert, and both Robert and Henry the sons of the
original Henry. Since Henry's
will was a PCC affair we can conclude he had considerable assets, but
Carpenters after him
in the area were of more modest means. The principal historical event in the
area to keep in mind is the
dissolution of Abbey land in the late 1530s. Most Locking land belonged to
the church.
Another topic deserving of research is the possibility of sons of Locking
Henry Carpenter
moving to more areas outside Berkshire. Somerset? Wiltshire?
Given that Locking Henry Carpenter was a man of means, his father should
have been a man of means himself. Thomas Carpenter of Reading is not a
candidate for father since Thomas d. in 1520 and was
an active adult in 1590.
Were Thomas and Henry brothers? His will and others should be interesting
and copies are on the way.
A line of related individuals seems to be:
1. William Carpenter junior
2. William Carpenter senior, b 1576, East Coxwell, Berkshire
3. Henry Carpenter of East Coxwell, Berkshire
4. Robert Carpenter of Locking, Berkshire
5 Henry Carpenter of Locking, Berkshire

A lot of people don't know that parts of Farmingdale are Nassau and
parts are Suffolk. The only reason I know is that for a short time I
lived on a road where the Nassau/Suffolk county line ran right through,
what a nightmare for voter's registration, etc!"
There is a great confusion and this confusion is attributable to the fact
the
U.S. Postal Service maintains non-conforming postal zones.
While the Village of Farmingdale is 100% in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau
County, the "Farmingdale, NY 11735" postal zone -- which is much, much
larger
than is the community whose name it "borrows" -- services an area on both
sides of the Nassau/Suffolk County line. But, these places in Suffolk
County
that have a "Farmingdale, NY 11735" mailing address are NOT in
"Farmingdale",
they are in either the Hamlet of East Farmingdale or the Hamlet of Wyandanch
in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County.
It's so confusing that a major campus of the State University of New York
thinks it's in "Farmingdale" when it never has been. SUNY Farmingdale is
actually in the Hamlet of East Farmingdale in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk
County.
So, to prevent any additional confusion, I offer:
. A Tale Of Two Cemeteries
There is much published misinformation concerning the location of the
"national" cemetery and the confusion between it and the "private" cemetery,
both located within an area (neighborhood) referred to as "Pinelawn" in the
Hamlet of East Farmingdale (Farmingdale P.O.), Town of Babylon, Suffolk
County.
The Public or Government Cemetery:
Long Island National Cemetery
2040 Wellwood Avenue
East Farmingdale (Farmingdale P.O.), NY 11735
tel: 631/454-4949
fax: 631/694-5422
eMail: abianco(a)cem.va.gov (This eMail may no longer be current. If you
obtain a more current eMail, please forward same to me.)
The Private Cemetery:
Pinelawn Memorial Park
Pinelawn Road
P.O. Box 420
East Farmingdale (Farmingdale P.O.), NY 11735\
tel: 631/249-6100
fax: 631/249-6638
eMail: ?????
Please note the following:
(1) The "Farmingdale, NY 11735" postal zone is 1 (one) of 3 (three)
bi-county postal zones (the others being Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724 and
Amityville, NY 11701). While the "Farmingdale, NY 11735" postal zone serves
an area in both counties, the Village of Farmingdale is completely within
the
border of the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County. That portion of the
"Farmingdale, NY 11735" postal zone in Suffolk County is most probably
within
the Hamlet of East Farmingdale in the Town of Babylon.
(2) The area where these 2 (two) cemeteries are located also includes a
number of other private cemeteries and is being referred to as the
"Pinelawn"
area or simply "Pinelawn". Thus, it is possible that references to Long
Island National Cemetery include the term "Pinelawn" as a locational guide.
(3) NEWSDAY (personal note: the paper of geographic illiteracy) adds to
the
confusion by referring to Long Island National Cemetery as Pinelawn National
Cemetery (or Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn).
(4) For those who are really into geography: The Long Island National
Cemetery is mostly in the Hamlet of East Farmingdale, Town of Babylon, but
does include land in the Hamlet of Melville, Town of Huntington. The
Pinelawn Memorial Park is mostly in the Hamlet of East Farmingdale, Town of
Babylon, but does include land (currently vacant) in the Hamlet of
Wyandanch,
also in the Town of Babylon.
I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

Hello List,
I'm trying to find info on Caleb Carpenter (B: Sept.
25th, 1736 in Musketa Cove, Long Island - D: Dec 20th,
1826, in Clinton, NY). He married twice, one of the
marraiges to Zipporah Carpenter (widow of James Kipp).
Specifically, I'm trying to find info on Caleb's
Patriot service. Does anybody have any detail on
this? I know he served in New York, but thats about
all that I know. Any additional info would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks!
