Dear Bruce E.,
The Carpenter Family Association helped back Amos B. Carpenter in his 50
year effort to chronicle the MA Carpenter Family. The best thing to
come out of the CFA was the 900 page book!
When you read the Carpenter Memorial (1898) [copied on the CE CD 2001]
go to page 853. There is the Reported English Estate with intents et
cetera to recover money in England reported to be $200,000,000 in 1882
dollars (see page 859). Page 859 describes the "Great Estates in
England" to be had for the proper claimants.
There were 3 CFA variations over the 50 years. Many lawyers were
involved and it appears only the lawyers got money from the Fraud!
Typical! Think of the thousands of dollars spent on this project!
Please note that the 1883 book by James Usher, only 1 of the 4 (5?)
Carpenter families listed has been proven fraudulent. This LI Carpenter
Group was "disowned" because of their "Loyalty" in the Revolutionary
War. Many of this group went to Canada after the Revolution. Some
returned only to face the War of 1812, so some moved once again back to
Canada.
History is a hoot!

What you are saying is that the first book length history of the
Carpenter
family was in fact a fraud, created to disenfranchise the Long Island
family
from old English wealth that in the end was only imagined! This is
outrageously funny.

This is great stuff. So the Long Island Carpenters were loyalists!
Anything more on that???

Dear Bruce E.,
A "James Usher" was involved in a fraudulent production of a Carpenter
line to prevent "true" Carpenters from getting a legacy in England worth
"thousands of pounds" sterling.
The information below is in the CE CD 2001.
I hope this helps answer your question.

Ahnentafel Chart for Cotleb or Caleb Zimmerman-12522
First Generation
1. Cotleb or Caleb Zimmerman-12522 was born about 1517 in of, Prussia,
Germany. He died about 1585 in , , Holland.
Cotleb Zimmerman = Caleb Carpenter Cotleb might also be Gotlieb.
SEE E-MAIL NOTES REGARDING THIS LINE BELOW!!!
Per James Usher:
About the year 1540, one Cotleb Zimmerman emigrated from Prussia to
England, where he married and settled. The name changed into English is
Caleb Carpenter. He had a family of children, one of whom was named
Ezra, who also married and had issue. Another child named Elihu, who
married young, and reared a large family.
Cotleb or Caleb when he was quite advanced in years, The Society of
Friends or Quakers arose, with whom he joined, and in consequence he was
greatly persecuted and maltreated. He finally fled with his family,
children and grandchildren, taking refuge in Holland, where he remained
a considerable time, until the persecution abated, when most of them
returned to England.
>From the above circumstances, it was supposed that the Carpenter family
orginated in Holland, and it is believed that some of them remained in
Holland, and they, with other English exiles, established Quakerisim
there.
MISC: No record that Cotleb returned to England, suggesting he died
there. He must have been barely of age when he came to England. He may
have been influenced or invited by The Society of Friends to join them
in England about 1540. He was involved in the presecutions that
occurred in England in the late 1550s and 1560s. Most of the
presecution died down by 1570 only to rear its head again in the 1630's.
Information supplied by Mr. W. C. Barker, born 1819. Per the book
cited below: "It is believed that (this family) is a branch of the MA
family, as Joseph, the eldest son of William, of Providence, setled on
Long Island in 1664." See : "Genealogical and Historical Record of the
Carpenter Family" by James Usher. 929.273 C225u Page 30 of the
Carpenter Family of Long Island and NY.
MISC: Regarding the above note:
The five purchasers of Musketa Cove were Joseph Carpenter, Nicholas
Simpkins and the brothers Daniel, Robert and Nathaniel Coles, sons of
Robert Coles of Pawtuxet, RI. A Map drawn in 1677 showed that the only
Carpenters on Musketa Cove were the brothers Joseph and Ephraim
Carpenter. Joseph owned the site of the first house built in
Musketa Cove about 1668. Adjacent to his land was the land of Daniel
Coles, son of Robert Coles of Pawtuxet.
Amos B. Carpenter stated in the Carpenter Memorial he was never ever
able to substantiate any migration from Wales to Long Island in 1678,
supporting the determination that the brothers had orginated in
Providence.

Thanks John for sending this. The German-Welsh origin you cite is one
of the better-known Carpenter frauds, and it still surfaces every now
and then when some newbie thinks they've discovered something nobody
else knows about, and they accept it without question and go out to
convert the world to their way of thinking! When you stop and think
about it, it is a preposterous origin, which cannot be proved or
disproved on its own merits, which is usually a clue that it could be
false. The solid linking of the family to the previous English line
proved the undoing of this one, though it still is in print and
circulating. Pointing this one out is a great service to us all --
Thank you! Terry

This fraudulent Carpenter line of Long Island goes back into Wales then
England then to a Cotleb or Caleb Zimmerman of Prussia. Some real
information is given but the birth dates are off usually by 2 days
compared researched birth dates. Also fictious places are given in
Wales and sources that have never been found.
The deviance begins (per James Usher) at:

Apparently James Usher was a lawyer for the Carpenter Family Association
in the mid 1800s. The CFA believed that a great fortune was to be had
in England by the rightful Carpenter heirs in America.
Those Carpenter families who had been or were "Loyalists" in the
Revolutionary War or "Confederates" in the Civil
War were branded Zimmermans and not true Carpenters. Thus they would be
excluded from the money. Amos Bugbee Carpenter in his five decade and
900 page work 1898 could find NO EVIDENCE of such a fortune to be had in
England. He also indicated the lack of proof of the Zimmerman ancestry
of the Long Island Carpenters and that his research (along with others -
SEE DHC 1901 book) showed a different but definitely Carpenter ancestry
for the Loyalists and some of the southern Confederate Carpenters.

The 70 page Carpenter book sounds fascinating. How can one get a copy? Are
there other Carpenter books I should look for? Going to LDS center soon.
I'm descended from both William of Rehoboth and William of Providence.

Apparently there was a historian James M. Usher 1814-1891 who revised
and expanded a history of the town of Medford, Mass., but there was
also a James Usher of New York ?-1878 who was a "genealogist and
heraldic painter" and who seems to have specialized in unclaimed
legacies. Is it clear that the 70-page Carpenter book was written
*after* 1878? From the sound of it, a posthumous work by the
James with no middle name might lead to a wild goose chase. I note
that MELVYL lists the Carpenter book, but ascribes it to the notorious
Bishop James Ussher (who lived in the 17th century!).

Although not a Carpenter book, the following will certainly
be a genealogy classic. Kennan a statesman, author, academic at Princeton,
researched his own family in MA, to VT and finally N.Y. in the 1700s.
He takes the reader through each step, each problem and creates
a real family history with skimpy evidence.
Can't be missed.

Hi !
I have a question for those in the know. I noticed in the Chronicles of the
Scoth-Irish that a Thomas Carpenter was noted in 1767 living in JOCKEY.
Looked it up and there is a Jockey in Greene County TN. Later the
Chronicles mention a Thomas commonly called "JACKE" in 1768. Is it possible
he was called this because of where he lived?
