Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I have posted my Louisiana Carpenter line on a FTM site, also Carpenters
that I have located in the last 12 years, that I haven't connected yet. If
your missing a Carpenter, maybe you'll find them, as they came from various
locations.

Can anyone help me identify the men listed below and their parents?
I think the John Lewis Company was from western Botetourt or Greenbrier County(possibly Craig County,VA). The battle was in 1774 which would probably mean their births about mid 1750's and earlier.
Would they be sons of Solomon from the Jackson river?
A Thomas received a land grant on Potts Creek which is a south branch from the Jackson. A Greenbrier land transfer refers to a Thomas from Harrison County but did he reside in Harrsion County in the early 1800's?
A Thomas was listed on the 1820 Cabell County census but his age was 26-44, a son to the wounded soldier?
Was the John listed below the same John F. listed on the 1820 Greenbrier County census and moved west before 1830?
Did Jeremiah move to Harrison County?
If they were brothers, who was the father?
Any help on these Carpenters would be appreciated.
Thanks - Jeff Thornton

Dear Bill & John L.,
Apparently you can not change the data on RootsWeb, but you can post a
"post-em note" mentioning the error. See the notes and references
below.
THEN in another part of the (#9) helpdesk answers it says you can ...
but you need the old user code and password! Net result is those that
submitted can correct, but others must use "post-ems!"
No wonder why so many people are confused. Also about half of the
e-mail addresses are bad so the person who submitted can not be found.
The error rate must be huge.

How do I update my GEDCOM file in the WorldConnect Project?
Return to HelpDesk
To update your file in the WorldConnect Project, you will need to
go through the following steps. If you have forgotten
your User Code or password, you can retrieve them from Password
Central.
1.
Go into your genealogy program (Family Tree Maker, PAF,
etc.) and make the correction; save it.
2.
Create a new GEDCOM file from the revised file.
3.
Upload the revised GEDCOM into the WorldConnect
Project, with the same User Code you originally used. This is
important because the User Code ensures that your new file
will overwrite the old one.

How do I correct an error in your database?
Return to HelpDesk
Errors found in databases typically cannot be updated or changed,
just as you would not expect a census record to be
updated if you found an error. On most of our databases we offer
you the ability to use our Post-em Notes. Post-em
Notes enable you to attach a notation to a database record, giving
corrected information.
If you find an error in the Social Security Death Index, you should
contact your local Social Security Administration
(SSA) office. Be sure to bring documentation with you. They will
correct the main Death Master File (DMF), and the
change will be distributed to those who maintain copies of the file
with the next set of updates. They will also give you a
verification document of SSA's current records, which you can use
as proof of the error. You will want to add a
Post-em Note to the file, as it may take a while before we get the
update.
If you find an error in a database that originated from a state
agency, you may want to notify them of the error, in
addition to adding a Post-em Note to the record. They recognize
that there may be data entry errors, and users may
discover an error such as a misspelling of a name or an incorrect
date. Most state indexes are static and cannot be
altered. However, if you are concerned that the original
certificate is in error, most states suggest you file an amendment
to the certificate with the correct information.
If you find an error in a file submitted by an individual, such as
a GEDCOM file in our WorldConnect Project, you may
use a Post-em Note to flag the error. However, you should also
contact the submitter with the correct information. The
submitter owns the files, not RootsWeb.

What are Post-em Notes? How do I use them?
Return to HelpDesk
Post-em Notes enable researchers to help fill in missing pieces of
existing files. They are the electronic equivalent of a
yellow sticky note. They allow you to attach information -- for
example, your e-mail address, a link to another Web
address, or corrected data -- to the record of any individual in
the Social Security Death Index, the WorldConnect
Project, and many other databases at RootsWeb.
Post-em Notes require a password, which you select. Should you ever
forget your password, you can retrieve it from
Password Central.
I need a password. My password doesn't work. May I change my
password?
Return to HelpDesk
You can verify or retrieve your passwords from Password Central. It
also has other helpful information you can access,
such as which mailing lists you are subscribed to.
Password Central:
http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/
You do not need a password for most programs and resources at
RootsWeb. If passwords are required, generally you
will be able to determine your own; a few areas use passwords to
ensure that only you access your files, or to thwart
spammers from harvesting addresses. (Such areas include the
WorldConnect Project, the RootsWeb Surname List
(RSL), Post-em Notes, and the Threaded Archives.) If you have
forgotten your password for the Threaded Archives,
just go ahead and create a new one. For other programs you may
retrieve existing passwords through Password
Central (see above).

A really beautiful French Internet location is at
www.atlas.heraldique.de-france.org/
It maps the entire ancient royalty of France and their armorials. The
House
of Gouy is discussed
in the Vexin section (see index). The Counts of DeMelun have their
section
also.
Anyone wishing to connect me may do so at carp(a)whidbey.com in about a
week.
I'm going
fishing until April 1st in Washington State.
I have much I wish to say re. Tudor period Carpenters in England. Please
be
patient.

Dear Jerry,
The best thing you can do is to get his military record. It should have
the information you need. Go to the following web site:
http://www.nara.gov/regional/mprsf180.html
I am very grateful that most people on this Carpenter Forum are willing
to help each other with (mostly) Carpenter related problems.
If we need help, we should ask.

Hello Cousins,
I have a Carpenter Cousin that was killed in WW2 and I can't find any
information on him. Can anyone help? He is: Winston Homer Stone USMC
PFC Serial No. 00492676. He was on a ship that sunk in the Pacific and
his name is on the Punchbowl Memorial in Hawaii. He was listed missing
in Feb. 1944 and declared dead on May 15, 1944. I can't find anything
else about his military life, like the name of the ship he was on, and
if it was part of a battle when it was sunk. Is there a web site that
would help me? I know that I can fill out forms and send to Washington,
but that takes so long. If anyone can, please help. The reason I have
sent this to the Carpenter Web Site is because Winston Homer Stone's
Mother was a Carpenter.
Thanks,
Jerry Carpenter

Hi Listers,
I recognized the Bios that Nancy sent of Timothy Carpenter & Benjamin T.
Carpenter as having come from the 1881 HISTORY OF KENT CO, MICHIGAN by
Chapman of Chicago, IL, 1881. These are NOT high school research papers, but
family histories written for that publication back in 1881. If you follow the
posting all the way to the bottom, you will see where Nancy has put the source
in most cases.
