While the mystery of who Alice Carpenter and her sisters were continues, a
few
interesting clues exist regarding husbands' occupations. Both William
Bradford
and the Fullers (Agnes Carpenter connection) were classic 'clothiers'.
Bradford
was a 'Fustian Maker' and Samuel Fuller was a 'Say-weaver'. The Bradford
wills
make fascinating reading in this regard with lists of bolts of cloth. A
probability
here is that the Carpenter ladies were chosen as wifes because of their
cloth making skills
and related help they would extend to their husbands. Was Alexander
Carpenter a 'clothier'?
The long doubted connections between Alice and Rehoboth William/Providence
William
take on new life
here. Old family ties and business connections?
The individual(s) who answers these questions with sufficient clarity has
made a small but
important contribution to American history.
Bruce Carpenter
Jack,
Thanks for the invitation. I would love to help. I have just
extended Claiborn Carpenter's line to living relatives so I can now
extend that line to current time. I feel I have just climbed a hill
and am on my way down to the other side!
I have been combing local records but there isn't much in the Mobile,
Alabama area although I did find Benjamin's will here. Alton
Carpenter said he had been looking for this will in regards to Hensley
and Eaton Carpenter and was just about to send off for it when I
e-mailed what I had found.

Subject: Re: [CARPENTER] Benjamin
Hi Lee,
I have been going over the data you posted and, outside of some
estimated birth dates, it looks good. At this point we can make some
statements of fact such as Capt. Nathaniel Carpenter can be considered
the founder of the Virginia Carpenters through his sons John and Joseph
C. who moved into Virginia. We can also say Nathaniel was the son of
Joseph Carpenter, the grandson of William Carpenter of Amesbury, the
founder of the Providence, RI Branch of the Carpenters, and that
Nathaniel was also the son of Hannah Carpenter who was the granddaughter
of Captain William Carpenter, the founder of the Rehoboth, MA Branch of
the Carpenters. However, as we get into the descendants of Nathaniel and
his brother William, things are not as clear cut. We know that Nathaniel
Carpenter had a son-in-law named Caleb Fowler, who was most probably
related to Freelove Fowler, the wife a Benjamin Carpenter. We know that
Nathaniel's son John also had a daughter named Amey who married one Caleb
Carpenter, the grandson of Nathaniel's brother William and the father of
a Benjamin Carpenter who married Freelove Fowler. We also know from your
data that another Benjamin Carpenter, the son of Joseph and Frances
(Dames) Carpenter, had some questionable marriages and lineage problems
that poses additional questions. Also, Compounding this problem is the
fact that these Benjamins are all related and were born in Musketa Cove.
As to your question "Where do you think this leaves us in regards to
Benjamin's father?" At this time I can only say that I am sure that
Benjamin has a father somewhere, but we need to do some more work to
verify the ancestral lineage so that the correct Benjamin get linked to
the right father. This is what we have been talking about the past few
months, and I hope you can join us in this research.

So all we really know about Alice is a transcription
from Dutch about her sister which reads "Agnys Carpenter of Wrenten in
England".
A slightly later notation reads "mar. 22 July 1612 to Julynen Carpenter
(Juliana Carpenter) of Den Baert, acc. by Alexander Carpenter her father ".
The two notations for Agnes are sure she came from a 'Wrenten' in England.
However 'of'
is a problem. Here sister came from elsewhere. It seems that who these
people were
and where they originated from is entirely unknown. Carpenter family history
as usual.

Lee,
I found Dangerfield in the Carpenter CD, but there are no descendants
given for him. However, I did find the ancestory interesting. It would
appear that your Dangerfield Carpenter may link into a project that is in
process by Stefani, and a small group of us, who are trying to resolve
who the Benjamin is that married Freelove Fowler (b. 1765) and/or is the
son of Caleb Carpenter (b. 1736). I,m sure we would like to exchange
information on this line.

I was reviewing information in the Carpenter CD and found the following
General Notes for one Benjamin Carpenter b. (unk) in Masketa Cove, Long
Island and D. 1832 in Amherst, VA.. I found them interesting and felt
they may help resolve the Benjamin mix up, or may confuse it even more.
!NOTE: SEE below for WARNING on linkage to the New England Carpenters.
!Benjamin was married twice. Once in 1770 to Mary then to Sarah. Sarah
was the second. AF lists Sarah with 8 children (b. 1770 to 1780). AF
lists Mary with 2 children (1776 & 1778). Children are duplicative.

<adcarpenter(a)earthlink.net>To: John Carpenter <jrcrin001(a)home.com> Hi
John:
I have unwittingly published what I now believe to be erroneous
information concerning the origins of my ancestor Benjamin Carpenter, of
Amherst Co., Va.. I used information which I have traced back to
Raymond Carpenter in an article which was published in the Carpenter and
Related Family Journal. I have examined all of the available evidence
and am in agreement with Terry L. Carpenter that there is more
information to declaim than to support the premise that Benjamin was a
member of the Joseph Carpenter family from New York. Also, I believe,
based upon his will, that my Benjamin had only one wife, Mary (?), as his
will states. The first wife, Sarah, attributed to him by prior
historians was in truth the wife of the Benjamin who died in Ill.. Eaton
and Enoch were full brothers to my Hensley Sr.. As far as I can
determine, my Benjamin arrived in America from England while he was in
his teens, resided in Queen and King Co., Va., and later moved to Amherst
Co. Recollections of near kin of Austin Carpenter recorded by Elsie
(Drummond) Carpenter and other descendants of James, although anecdotal,
are weighted heavier than the unsupported connections to the N.Y.
Carpenters.
As soon as I correct a few dates, I will put revised files on my web
sites. I wanted to let you know this as early as possible so you can
consider changes in Carpenters 2000 release. Please accept my apology
for any inconvenience this may have caused. Again, thanks for your
help and participation.
Best Regards, Alton D. Carpenter
MARRIAGE: The above E-MAIL indicates two Benjamin Carpenter families
merged
together. When further information comes forth they will be split.

JRC 9/2000.
Vicki, there were John Carpenters in Moore Co. NC,(1700's) but I am not the
best Carpenter researcher to tell you about them. Some of them left and
went to GA, and my John wound up in Franklin Co., GA, and married Ester
Minyard there. They then moved to Carrol Co., MS, and my line came on over
to Drew Co., AR. There are still carpenters and Minyards by the bucketfuls
in Carrol Co., and they are all intermarried and related. Many think they
came out of a Revolutionary soldier, Thomas Owen Carpenter, who was killed,
thus causing many of his descendents to retain the Owen name until present
day.

I just received my ggrandmother's (Melissa A. Carpenter Taylor)death
certificate. It identifies Melissa Angeline Carpenter Taylor's parents as Len
Carpenter and Marie Perry. I would like to identify Len Carpenter or Marie
Perry Carpenter's parents. I am guessing that Len and Marie were married in
about 1850 because my ggrandmother was born in 1852(D. 1937) in Sullivan
County New York. On the death certificate for birthplace of parents "W.D." is
written. I am not sure of what this means. Any help would be appreciated.

I am seeking information on my gggrandfather, Charles Abram Carpenter. I am
told by my greatuncle that be was born in England on March 2, 1871, and died
January 10, 1933 (in Oberton, North Dakota?). Had a brother named Herbert
Carpenter.
Charles Abram, according to Uncle Ken, come to the United States around 1890
(possibly with Herbert), and married Mattie Jane Severe July 2, 1892 in
Bloomington, IL. Mattie Jane was apparently a widow, and maybe already
connected to the Carpenter family through marriage.
Charles Abram and Mattie Jane had two sons: Carroll Adair Carpenter (my
ggrandfather) b. March 25, 1898 (Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL?), and Cecil
Carpenter.
Charles Abram married Elmeda Christine Bakken June 12, 1917, (in North
Dakota?). Their children were Charles Allen Carpenter (my grandfather),
Kenneth Carmen Carpenter, and Douglas Franklin Carpenter.
Cecil Carpenter married named Edna. They had at least one son.
I have yet to find any of my Carpenters in any census records. Any
information would be grreatly appreciated.

Providence William names sister "Fridgswith" Vincent, not in his will, but in
a deed, dated 14 Dec. 1671, in which he gives her the Amesbury house he had
inherited from his father, Richard (see Daniel Hoogland Carpenter, HISTORY
AND GENEALOGY OF THE CARPENTER FAMILY IN AMERICA [Jamaica, N.Y., 1901], pp.
9-10, citing Providence Book of Deeds, p. 449). It is from this document
alone that we know the name of Providence William's father and infer that the
son originated at Amesbury.
It has long been my intention to check the original Providence record (I'll
get to it one of these days). But William's sister's name has been repeated
often enough as spelled above (by J. O. Austin, among others), that I assume
D. H. Carpenter's transcription is, if not correct, at least close. The
baptismal records of her (and Thomas Vincent's) sons Thomas and William have
her as Frittisweed; she appears in her burial record (bur. 22 Nov. 1680) as
Fridizweed (Amesbury Parish Register, Vols. 1 and 2, n.pp. [FHL #1279337,
items 25, 26]).
All the above spellings--Fridgswith, Frittisweed, Fridizweed--are variants of
"Frideswide" (other 17th-century variants are "Frideswid," "Fridiswid," and
"Friswead"), from the Old English "Frithuswith" (see E. G. Withycombe, THE
OXFORD DICTIONARY OF ENGLISH CHRISTIAN NAMES).

I've seen stated in various gedcoms,WFT's and other places the date of death for Jotham #3509 as
being 23 Jun 1834 but I've not seen (or have missed) the accompaning reference.
ABC has the date as 23 Jun 1834 (Carpenter, Amos B. A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch
of the Carpenter Family in America, Amherst Mass: Carpenter & Moorehouse, 1898, pg 399).
Is this the only source for this date? Should I be looking somewhere else?
Thanks -

Hello, I am searching for information on this Asbury W. Carpenter ,
son of John C. Carpenter. Trying to straighten out two Asbury W's. John
C . Carpenter had a son William Sanford who married Elizabeth Caroline
Howard and another son named Asbury W. ( one I am searching for) This is
confusing so please bear with me. When William and Caroline married they
named children the same given names as Willam's brothers had. Their
oldest was Asbury W. ( my gr.grandfather. Both of these Asburys lived in
Hood county TX and evidently both were barbers. I had a researcher do
some research for me and it is completely mixed up.
This is what I have on the first Asbury, found on a scrap piece of paper
in my grandmother Jessie Lee Carpenter Wright's Bible.
Asbury W. Carpenter, son of John C. Carpenter and Elizabeth
married Manny LEE. I believe this Asbury W died in the 1880's but no
proof yet.
children :
Francis Monroe
children :
Aaron
then again is written Aaron Jr, Jimmy and Helen Wright
I am not sure by reading that note if Francis and Monroe were two sons
or one son. Also, did Francis have a son son Aaron who had a son Aaron Jr?
I know this is a terrible written query but it is all I have , any help
deeply appreciated.
Thanks , Pat in OK
