I am looking for a Raymond Carpenter who would have been born around 1900. I beleive he may have been born in San Antonio Texas. He married Corinna McVay and they had a son Raymond Carpenter Jr. who was born in San Antonio Texas on June 14, 1924. In 1926 he was in Logan County Arkansas where Corinna died. He gave his son to Corinna's sister Ida Rosalind and her husband who moved Raymond Jr. to Atlanta, Georgia. Raymond Sr wrote Ida sometime later saying he was in Oklahoma City and that he had remarried and had another son. I would love to hear about him. I am the granddaughter of Raymond Jr. (who's name was changed to David Harmon Johns). The family knows very little about Raymond Sr. so any information could help.
Thanks,

Martin Carpenter, a farmer and stock raiser, was born in Lawrence
County, Miss., February 9, 1819, and is the third and only living
child in the family of four born to Solomon and Mary (Smith)
Carpenter. Solomon Carpenter was born in Georgia, where he lived until
about 1810, when he removed to Mississippi. He served as orderly-
sergeant under Gen. Jackson in the War of 1812, at the close of which
he returned to Lawrence County, Miss., and engaged in farming. In
later life he removed to Copiah County, Miss., where he died in 1839.
After the death of his first wife Solomon Carpenter married Nancy
Hudnell, who died leaving five children, all now deceased, and Mr.
Carpenter took for his third wife Mary Howell. She became the mother
of two children, and still survives her husband. Martin Carpenter, who
was but two years of age when his mother died, lived with his father
until seventeen years of age, when he had his home with an uncle. In
1840 he immigrated to Arkansas, and located in Franklin County near
where he now lives, which county has since been his home. He served
one year in the Mexican War, under William G. Preston, and
participated in the battle of Buena Vista. At the outbreak of the late
Civil War he enlisted as a private, was made second lieutenant, and
subsequently commissioned captain of his company, serving honorably
and actively until the close of the struggle. In 1844 Mr. Carpenter
married Martha Ann Moffatt, a native of Tennessee, and of the ten
children born to them four are living, viz.: Thomas J., Patterson,
Cosenia and Robert E. Mrs. Carpenter died August 14, 1885. Mr.
Carpenter is a member of Clarksville Lodge No. 5, A. F. & A. M. When
but twenty-three years of age he was elected justice of the peace,
which office he held two years. He has 150 acres of land under
cultivation, and is an enterprising citizen of the county.

ELEAZER W. CARPENTER was born in New Hampshire, June 23, 1827. His parents,
Willard and Betsey (Wason) Carpenter, were natives of New Hampshire, the
former having been born in 1789. They were married in 1812 and had two
children--Miranda, born in 1820, and Eleazer W., born in 1827; the former
died in 1863. The father died in New York in 1841, and the mother died in
Wisconsin in 1864. Eleazer W. Carpenter was married November 13, 1854, to
Miss Emily M., daughter of John and Hulda (George) Plumer. She was born in
New Hampshire, June 25, 1830. Her father was born in 1808, and was the son
of Nathaniel Plumer, who was born May 29, 1764. The family of E. W.
Carpenter consists of seven children, namely--John W., born May 15, 1856;
Stephen, born November 16, 1858; Hulda, born March 7, 1861; Cyril, born
September 4, 1863; Marion, born March 31, 1866; Miranda, born October 14,
1868, and Lydia, born May 31, 1871. Mr. Carpenter went with his parents from
their native state, in 1840, to New York, where, at the age of sixteen, he
hired out by the month to work on a farm. His next move was to Wisconsin in
1854, where he was married and settled down to farming. He enlisted in
September, 1864, in the First Regiment, Minnesota heavy artillery. His
regiment was stationed at Chattanooga, Tenn., and performed garrison duty
during most of the service. He was mustered out June 17, 1865. In the fall
of 1872 he started West to prospect for his future home. He arrived at
Gibbon, Buffalo county, Nebr., after a long and wearisome journey made with
an ox team. He remained here until the following spring; in the meantime,
however, he busied himself looking for a location. He was especially pleased
with the land in the Cedar Creek valley, and he finally took up a homestead
there. He built a frame house, sod being the material mostly employed at
this early date. There was scarcely any settlement in this section at that
time, and wild game was

EARLY DAYS IN NEBRASKA
BY J. A. CARPENTER
I came to Gage county, Nebraska, in the fall of 1865, and homesteaded
160 acres of land, four miles from the village of Beatrice, in the Blue
River valley. I built a log house 12x14 feet with one door and two windows.
The floor was made of native lumber in the rough, that we had sawed at a
mill operated by water power.
With my little family I settled down to make my fortune. Though drouth
and grasshoppers made it discouraging at times, we managed to live on what
little we raised, supplemented by wild game - that was plentiful. Wild
turkeys and prairie chickens could be had by going a short distance and
further west there were plenty of buffalo and antelope.
Our first mail was carried from Nebraska City on horseback. The first
paper published in Gage county was in 1867 and was called the Blue Valley
Record. In 1872 a postoffice was established in the settlement where we
lived, which was an improvement over going four miles for mail. For the
first schoolhouse built in the district where I lived I helped haul the
lumber from Brownville, Nebraska, on the Missouri river, sixty-five miles
from the village of Beatrice. The first few crops of wheat we raised were
hauled to Nebraska City, as there was no market at home for it. On the
return trip we hauled merchandise for the settlement. Every fall as long as
wild game was near us we would spend a week or two hunting; to lay in our
winter supply of meat. I remember when I came through where the city of
Superior now is, first in 1866 and again in 1867, nothing was to be seen but
buffalo grass and a few large cottonwood trees. I killed a buffalo near the
present. town of Hardy.
We have lived in Nebraska continuously since 1865 and it is hard to
believe the progress that it has made in these few years.

FREDERIC W. CARPENTER.
The old Knickerbocker state has given her share of worthy sons in
peopling the west, and of these, none has done his duty as he understands it
more faithfully than Frederic W. Carter, of Bloomfield.
Mr. Carpenter was born at Afton, Chenango county, New York, September 1,
1860. His father, William A. Carpenter, was born near Goshen, Orange county,
that state, and followed farming all his life. He lived in Chenango county
at the time Frederic was born, and a few years later removed nine miles away
to a farm near Harpersville, in Broom county. The mother, Susan (Seely)
Carpenter, was born in Chenango county, and resides now in Afton, at the age
of eighty years.
Frederic Carpenter lived the first ten years of his life near Afton, and
attended the schools of that town and of Harpersville until he was nearly of
age. He learned the tinner's trade at Binghamton, being apprenticed, January
25, 1880, and worked in the vicinity of his home until coming west in 1883.
He came direct to Nebraska, arriving in Creighton September 7, and soon
after filed on a homestead in the western part of Knox county, between Venus
and Walnut Grove. He lived on the homestead until 1885, seeking work at his
trade from time to time, to make a living until he could prove up and secure
title to his land. On these trips, he worked at O'Neill, Neligh, Niobrara,
Creighton and Bazile Mills, In 1885, he moved to Creighton, and was employed
here until the spring of 1891, eight years for one man.
He then migrated to Roseburg, Oregon, when he worked at his trade for
seven and one-half years. Hard times brought him disaster, and, losing his
all, he abandoned everything, and returned to Nebraska. Working in Omaha for
three months, he came back to Creighton, where he knew a place was always
awaiting him, and had steady employment here until 1901, when he accepted a
good offer at Bloomfield, and has been here ever since. He has had full
charge of the tin shop of the Pioneer Hardware Store since 1906, and his
excellent work gives entire satisfaction to his employer and his patrons.
This was not his first visit to the site of Bloomfield, he having ridden
over the country when it was a part of the open plains, and when the present
townsite was a herding ground for cattle on the open range.
Mr. Carpenter was married in Creighton, January 5, 1888, to Miss Mary
Agnes Carpenter, who was born in the Dominion of Canada, a daughter of
Oliver Carpenter, who was in no wise related to the Carpenters in New York.
Three sons have been born to Mr. Carpenter: Wayland, who has begun
railroading; Everett, deputy postmaster at Bloomfield, and Oliver.
During the early years of his life in Nebraska, Mr. Carpenter, like the
other settlers, burned hay, corn and stalks for fuel. During one of his
trips to O'Neill, he was employed for two months, working seventeen hours a
day, making the sheet iron hay burners that were in vogue at that time, such
was the demand for those heaters.
On his claim, Mr. Carpenter lived in a sod house, the usual dwelling of
those days, and can testify to its comfort in both winter and summer.
His marriage occurred just a week before the memorable blizzard of
January 12, 1888. He lived near the store, and had hardly become settled at
the time of the terrible storm. He had no occasion to go out into it, but
has vivid recollections of the suffering in the frigid temperature following
in its wake.
Mr. Carpenter has never been much of a hunter, but as a fisherman he is
unexcelled. He indulged himself to his heart's content during the years he
lived in Oregon.
Mr. Carpenter is a republican in politics, and a member of the Ancient
Order of United workmen.

Subject: william Carpenter Descent
Hi my name is Star Culver Makenzie. I am I believe 13th maybe wrong on
generation but 13th generation direct descent of William Carpenter who
sailed from England in 1638, landing in Weymouth, Mass. I live across the
road from what was the original Homestead of Benjamin Carpenter which he
built in 1804. Benjamin was a patriot and raised a company for the colonial
army. IN 1773he married Mary Pugsley and there were eight children from
this marriage. The Tories who were stationed in Washington Hollow gave
him a lot of trouble, they robbed him several times. Once the robbed him of
his prize possession which was Capt. John Carpenter's Sword which was dated
1660's. Benjamin decided not to live under constant attacks. with two
other purchases he bought "Carpenter Hill" from John Miller. I live on
Carpenter Hill today. I wish I could say that we were able to keep the farm
but we had to sell 15 years ago the only thing that is still in the family
are two houses that were built in the sixties. The land is the only the
thing that is the same. We also have a cemetary full of the carpenter
ancestors and a memorial. Benjamin, himself was the sixth direct descent of
William carpenter. Benjamin was born 1749-1837 Morgan Capenter
1795-1871was one of benjamin sons. He married Mary Bockee in1819. Isaac
Smith Carpenter was Morgans son 1828-1898. He married twice the first wife
was Julia wilson in 1851. three children. The Sencind wife of Isaac was

I'm a new subsciber to the list and have been listening and learning from the posts on the board.
Would anyone have any info or direct me to where I can research the Carpenter line of Charles
Edwin Carpenter, b 28 Sep 1840 in Cumberland, Rhode Island. He married Martha Burr Foster abt
1864, raised the family in Attleborough, MA., and died abt. 1928.
I'm related to this line of Carpenters through my mother:
Charles E. Carpenter > Charles H. Carpenter > Grover Burr Carpenter > Mary J.(Carpenter) Walsh >
Dennis Grover Walsh.
In a previous email there was a mention of a book on the Carpenter Family History. Is this
availble for purchase or is it privately held?
As I'm reasonably new to genealogy (the past couple of years) I would appreciate any ideas/leads
sugestions as to how to best research my line of the Carpenter family.
Respectfully,
Dennis

Dear all,
It's been quite a few months - I've changed states, geographically
and like some others...emotionally it seems.
I do like the atmosphere since I was last poking at this keyboard in
October - can anyone help me out with my ancestoral dilemma?
My CARPENTER line hails from the Forest of Dean alas it's recorded
(in a family bible??) that my gr gr grandfather JOSEPH CARPENTER
passed away at Pennsylvania, near Cold Ashton, GLOS abt 1900. His son
EDWARD JOHN CARPENTER - possibly passed away in Ruspidge Cinderford,
but I know his son WILLIAM EDWARD HENRY CARPENTER did pass away in
Hilldene, Cinderford, GLOS
His son, my father, KEITH EDWARD CARPENTER passed away in Adelaide,
S.A. about the same time (1992) and so I have limited information and
as no living relatives have any knowledge or resources it's up to me
and my finger...
Anyone having any information would be greatly appreciated.

North Abington Township in Luzerne County (now Lackawanna County) was
established in 1812, with the Arrival of Asa Knight. Following these
early settlers were Asa's son Archibald Knight, Daniel Long, Ira Lewis,
Peter Cole, John Lewin, Leonard Hopfer, John Kennedy, Alfred Frisk
William Foster and members of the Carpenter family ( Most of these were
from Rhode Island and New York). The settlements along the old Route 407
in North Abington Township became known as Carpenter Town named for the
Latter Family.
The Knight Cemetery located on Asa Knight's land was used by these
residents of Carpenter Town as well as those that lived in Wallsville.

Hail to the Chief
Bush and Cheney are having lunch at a diner near the White House. Cheney
orders the "Heart-Healthy" salad. Bush leans over to the waitress and
says,
"Honey, could I have a quickie?" She is horrified!
She says, "Mr. President, I thought your administration would bring a
new
era of moral rectitude to the White House. Now I see I was wrong and
I'm
sorry I voted for you." And she stalks off.
Cheney leans over and says, "George, though it's spelled Q-U-I-C-H-E,
it's
pronounced "keesh'."

Cousins, if you're so disdainful of the dirty joke, why do you keep sending
it back to us? You can easily delete material from mail you're sending.....
I think the joke is funny. However, it's old, and out of place on the list.
But,. Gene, feel free to send me anymore you might have.

> One of the most shocking murders was that of Judge Louis Carpenter. Judge
> Carpenter was a young man of marked ability, and had already won some
> distinction. He had been judge of probate for Douglas county, and the year
> before had been a candidate for attorney general of the state. He had been
> married less than a year and had a delightful home in the eastern part of
> the town. Several gangs came to his house, robbed him of his valuables and
> took what they pleased from the house. But his coolness and self possession,
> his genial manner and tact every time diverted them, and they left him
> unharmed and his house unburned. Towards the last another gang came who were
> harder to divert than the others had been. He accosted them in his usual
> pleasant way, hoping to engage them in conversation. One of them asked
> "where he was from." "New York, "he replied. "Oh its you New York fellows
> who are doing all the mischief." The fellow drew his revolver and Carpenter
> ran into the house. The man dismounted and followed. Mr. Carpenter ran first
> one way and then another, and finally escaped into the cellar. He was
> already badly wounded and the blood lay in a pool where he stood. His hiding
> place was soon discovered, and he ran out into the yard. The man followed
> and shot him again. He fell mortally wounded. His wife ran to him and threw
> herself over him to protect him from further violence. The brute
> deliberately walked around her to find a place to shoot once more. He
> finally raised her arm, thrust his revolver under it, and fired so that she
> saw the charge enter her husband's head. They then set fire to the house,
> but Mrs. Carpenter's sister extinguished the flames and saved the house.
> There was nothing in Judge Carpenter's character or life which could give
> any reason for the venom with which he was pursued. He was moderate and
> conservative in his views and had taken no special part in the early
> conflict. There is no evidence that they even knew who he was, or anything
> about him beyond the fact that he lived in Lawrence.
>
> Another case of singular brutality was the murder of Edward P. Fitch
> who lived a couple of blocks from Judge Carpenter. He was up-stairs (sic)
> when they came to the door. They called to him to come down and as soon he
> appeared they shot him, and he fell in his own doorway. Although he was
> evidently dead, they continued to shoot until they had lodged six or eight
> bullets in his body. They then came in and set fire to the house. Mrs. Fitch
> endeavored to drag her husband out from the house but they forbade her. She
> then tried to take his picture from the wall, but she was forbidden to do
> even this. Stupefied by the horrors of the scene and the strange brutality
> exhibited towards her she stood in a half dazed condition looking at what
> was going on about her. As the fire progressed one of the ruffians came up
> and drove her out of the house. Otherwise she might have perished with the
> rest. She then took her three little ones a short distance away, and sat
> down on the grass and watched >>>
