Dear John ( and all)
I am back again with the problem of Thomas Carpenter b. 1726 ( s/o
Joseph) who married 1. Anne Stocker and 2. Lucretia Quintard in 1781 at
St. George's Church in Hempstead, NY ( according to the Carpenter
genealogy) However, I know ( from his will and tombstone inscription in
Lansingburg, NY) that Thomas, husband of Lucretia Quintard, was 76 yrs.
old when he died in 1831 in Lansingburg. He and Lucretia were married in
1781 at St. George's Church, Hempstead, NY "by military authority." The
genealogy stated that he was a loyalist and an ensign in Gen. Delancey's
Regiment which fought for the British. ( It was my understanding that
this regiment was made up of loyalists and not of British soldiers.)
However, I just found the following info in " The New Loyalists Index"
"Thomas Carpenter, Ensign in 2nd battalion Brig. Gen. Delancey's
Regiment c. 1783, AGE 26 yrs., from ENGLAND, served British Corps 4 yrs.
Provincial 7 Years. Source: "Loyalists in Ontario." On the land grant
database ( of loyalists who arrived from the US) at the Univ. of New
Brunswick, there is Lieut. Thomas Carpenter ( presumably the same with a
promotion) who recd a land grant in Parr Town, Sudbury. I sent for a
copy but they told me that particular land grant is 50 pages long and
all names - no bio info. I suspect they were the loyalists who arrived
in the fall fleet who found there was not enough land, supplies, etc.
left for all of them, etc. It is a long sad tale of the families who
tried to settle in Parr Town as winter set in. Perhaps that is why
Thomas and Lucretia went to New York state or to Ontario?
However, the genealogy may have been in error concerning Thomas
Carpenter. The one in the loyalists index, Ensign Thomas who was
identified in the marriage records at St. George's also, would have been
born in abt. 1757 ( give or take 2 yrs. since the index lists him as age
26 abt. 1783) But the real question is was he a native of England and
not related to the Carpenters on Long Island??
If so, then I would have to go back to England to find his ancestry and
he would not share the Carpenter ancestry at all! I hope the index is
mistaken b/c that means starting from square one again. Also, I don't
understand why he was fighting in Gen Delancey's brigade if he was from
England? Any help in this direction would be appreciated.
I notice you have some info today on locating English Carpenters.
I wonder if that would be helpful or whether I need to go through the
British military records? Or is this all another mistake??
I am beginning to wish I had left well enough alone and let him be 106
yrs old when he died! But I am still working on this for credit in
a class at BYU and I have until Oct. 19th to finish the 2nd part which
is to do another 30 hrs. on trying to solve this puzzle that arose from
the Carpenter genealogy- of course, the author had no way of knowing the
information I have at the time he wrote it. But is it possible that
Lucretia married a British soldier instead of a member of the colonial
family of Carpenters? That would explain why there doesn't seem to be
any Thomas b. 1755-1757 in the genealogy who would fit the loyalist
Ensign Thomas Carpenter.
Any suggestions or ideas on this problem would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm seeking ancestors of the HULDAH CARPENTER who married Asa Morse 20
Mar 1794, Sturbridge, Worcester Co., MA. (Source: Sturbridge, MA Vital
Records to 1850)
I have the "History and Genealogy of the Carpenter Family in America" by
Daniel Hoogland Carpenter (1901) on loan from the NEHGS Library for a
few days and was trying to connect her but alas - that was another one
of my fairy tale ideas. Does anyone know who Huldah's parents were?
Thanks so much!

Are any of you familiar with the Carpenter Coat of Arms. I found a
picture of it taken from a publication among my grandmother's things.
It is a greyhound passent and Cheif Sable (I don't know what that means)
and the crest has a greyhound's head. According to my information: "
This Coat of Arms, was granted to William Carpenter as appears by the
records of the Heralds College, London, 1663, subsequently found on the
Tombstone of Daniel Carpenter, of Rehoboth, Mass. who was born 1669."
I'd like to know if there is a story connected with it and what the
symbolism might mean.

Hi John,
Once childcare begins again (ie school), I'll have some free mornings to
do
some research at the VA State Library. I can check in Greer's book then
if
no one comes up with an answer by then.
My husband's family settled in Middlesex Co VA. I've been spending most
of
my library time researching them. I found that John Wake came from
Kingston Parish in Gloucester Co in 1751 when he bought land in
Middlesex
Co. I have some earlier Wakes, but haven't tied them into the line
yet. The earliest Wake I have found was in Greer's book: John Wake was
imported in Warwick River Co (now Newport News, VA) in 1636. I'm just
giving you some of these examples to let you know some of the places
I will be doing my research (via the library!) I can keep my eyes open
for Carpenters, but as I've said these are not my line.
For anyone interested, I'm researching the family of George
Zimmerman/Carpenter. I've been told that he arrived aboard the Neptune
in
1746 and after a few years in PA, settled in Rockingham Co VA. My line
remained in Rockingham Co VA and the "rest" of the family moved on to
Carpenter Station at Hustonville, KY.

The probable reason for the merchant Carpenters
longstanding squabbles with the Duke of Cornwall was
that the area became a special duchy of Prince Edward
(the Black prince) in 1337. By right of the duchy Edward
had various rights and privileges, one being 'wreck
of the sea'. The merchant Carpenters who had been
in Cornwall well before this developed a conflict of
interest with Edward i.e. he basically stole their
merchandise. The number of these incidents is a good
barometer of the scale of Carpenter merchant activity
even beond the Black Death years. Another side of this story
is that war conditions grew so bad that overseas trade
was impacted. The Gascon vineyards were devastated.
Hence it is no surprise to find the merchant Carpenters
in the cloth business at century end.
BC
Another previously overlooked piece
of Carpenter history found this morning which greatly adds
to our knowledge of merchant Carpenters active in Cornwall.
This is also a 'wreck of the sea' incident- which means
a local powerful individual had rights to any shipwreck in
his area. However often the merchants who owned the ship and cargo
would show up and take their property. These kinds of incidents
have turned out to be the most revealing for merchant Carpenter
history. Some of the names in this one have appeared before.
The first William Carpenter was a Bristol merchant. The John Carpenter
is of Lostwithiel (this is probably John Carpenter of Liskard).
In part with Carpenter names listed:
"on complaint by Edward, prince of Aquitaine and Wales, and Duke of
Cornwall.....William Carpenter, Simon Carpenter, William Carpenter, Andrew
Carpenter
of Dertemouth, Robert Carpenter, John Carpenter ..... and others, carried
away
200 barrels of his wine and other goods at Penryn, co. Cornwall,
and assaulted his men and servants at Lostwythiel." (Patent, July 10, 1371)
BC
John,
I don't know a thing about these Carpenters; not my line. But they may be
of interest to someone.
There's a book written by Greer who was a VA land clerk, I believe. He
compiled emigrants to VA based on the land grants. I'm thinking that many
of the persons in Greer's book are not on Hotten's lists either.

Dear Bruce,
Protection with clause volumus, for one year, for Richard Carpentere of
Mochelden, co. Gloucester, going on the kings
service to Ireland in the company of the kings son Thomas de Lancastre,
lieutenant of Ireland, on the safe-keeping of those parts. (Close,
Henry
IV, p. 201)"
Two Richard Carpenters come to mind in that time period.
The first one is more likely and would show a shipping tie with
Ireland. Also a form of body guard?
Thoughts?

!A Goldsmith by trade? In 1410, City of London Records indicate a
Richard Carpenter and Johannes Norman, goldsmiths sponsoring
an orphan. Apparently this of one of many encouraged by this Roberts
Grand-Uncle John Carpenter, the younger, the noted town clerk of London.
SEE: "THE CITY OF LONDON SCHOOL" By A. E. Douglas-Smith, 2nd Edition,

Oxford. The City of London School for the Poor was endowed by this
Richard's
uncle, named John or John the younger. On page 2 of the above, it lists
that "Richard (gfather) was a chandler living in Billiter Lane in 1381.
It also mentions on page 3, that a son named Robert Carpenter, "of whom
nothing is known except that he had a son (named) Richard and two
daughters (named) Joan and Katherine." This is known by John the
younger's will.

No Carpenter is mentioned. While it is possible that one was not noted,
it would take more effort to find.
I will keep looking.

Hi Folks,
If the long address does not work, try this shorter one ...
http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/moa/moa_search.html
then type "carpenter" in the search spot.

Dear Joyce,
Was interested in your e-mail as I have ancestor Orange Co. NY Carpenter
family (Moses Carpenter) who went to Onondaga Co. in about 1793. His
GRANDAUGHER married into an Ontario Co. family (Melvin) who are considered
very early residents and they went there after the Rev War. Are you sure of
the Ontario Co. births 50 years earlier?
I have done research on Ontario Co. (Phelps, probably ) Carpenters, (can't
think of their names and my files are in storage) but decided that they were
not closely related to mine, and remember that they were from MA.
