Dear John and Robin,
I am not doing much good these days for several reasons, one being my printer
is not working, power failure, bumped the scanner which in turn bumped the
printer, so my mail box is filling up with stuff and I am getting even more
behind.
Anyway, I think I have not shared with you fellows that I found on the
Onondaga Co. deed index, John and Abigail Carpenter, so know that they were
there, or at least had property in Onondaga Co. Also the NY book re. Rev.
War soldiers land grants (or whatever the appropriate word is) indicated that
John Carpenter had REQUESTED land in Onondaga co. Now, I don't know how big
Onondaga co. was at the time. I would guess that this is John who married
Abigail Moore, dau of Benjamin Moore and Lois Cory of Or. Co. Her id, at
least as far as her father's name is concerned has been proven by a mortgage
doc where she is named after the death of Benjamin Moore. (This was probably
on the mortgage which I tried to put on the lists.) Anyway, as AB Carpenter
book indicated she remarried after John died a Rev. Woodruff, as I recall
that is also noted on the mortgage.
I still can't believe that this John died in Chautaqua co. I believe he is
mixed up with another John, maybe the John b. Or. Co. 1830.

Hello list,
Who was the Benjamin Carpenter from Wake Co NC born ca 1746? He was a
private in the NC Line, pension file W5252. He married Sarah "Sally" Unknown
on 25 Aug 1789. Their children were "Willei" (born 8 Aug 1790), Charlotte,
Mary, William, Robert, Solomon, James, and Benjamin Jr. (I must say that I
don't understand why there was a "Willei" and a William. Willie was listed
in his pension as his oldest child.)
He was in the Hillsborough Dist, Wake Co for the 1790 census and in plain
Wake Co for the 1800 census. He was put on the pension roll on 25 Sep 1826.
He died 26 Aug 1829. Was he related to Burwell Carpenter of Wake Co who went
to Pendleton Dist SC in 1796?
I know he's not my ancestor Benjamin Carpenter who I am looking for:
Benjamin [Samson?] Carpenter (born ca 1771, died ca 1836-1840 Dale Co AL)
married ca 1806 to Martha ³Milly² Unknown (born ca 1780 in SC, died after ca
1850). They resided in SC ca 1808-1816, in Dale Co AL in 1830, and bought
land on 5 Jan 1836 in Dale Co. Milly and children resided in Dale Co AL in
1840 and in Coffee Co AL in 1850.
But the fact that "Benjamin" runs in his family makes me think that he was a
possible cousin or uncle to my Benjamin????
Thank you,
Rick

Me too!
Best evidence, which really isn't a whole lot, is that Reuben was the
son of Abigail JORDAN and Unknown CARPENTER. He had two brothers John
and Thomas. CARPENTER was killed in the war and Abigail married Thomas
MOFFETT in 1782. I descend from Abigail and Thomas.

2 females 20-30 (??)
1 female 50-60 (?)
John (son of Herbert?)

1 female 20-30 (?)
Would anyone be willing to tell me what line these
folks are from and their names?
Also searching for a Mary Carpenter's (Canada) parents
believed to be from the Carolinas or Virginia. She
married Jacob Shaw (son of Michael and Freelove Culver
Shaw) abt.1803 in Norfolk, Ontario, Canada. Mary and
Jacob had at least one son, Michael b.1831. Shaw is
sometimes seen as Shoaf.
Thank you,
Jeanette

Hello All,
Below is what I have on Richard Carpenter b. abt 1470.
Does anyone know what the "D.C.L." stands for? One person speculated it
had to with some type of "letter" degree from an University (Oxford?).
See notes below for the complete line on "1503 Carpenter, Rychard,
D.C.L. and priest, Remmesbury"
The Roman Catholic Church has a biographical dictionary of all past
Vicars, Bishops, et cetera. Does anyone have access to one? Maybe that
will help add a piece to the puzzle.
Also prominent people, such as Vicar Generals and Bishops were often
mentioned in their historical times version of Whos Who. Does anyone
have access to a volume like that?

Notes -------------------------------------------
!Raymond Carpenter, the genealogist, states that this Richard Carpenter
was Vicar General of Ramsbury to the Bishop of Salisbury. He was a
CATHOLIC PRIEST, he died in 1503. See notes below. Coat-of-Arms below.
Per Oxford University Records he came from Hereford and had brothers
James, John, and William.
!The Reverend Richard Carpenter followed in the footsteps of his
granduncle John Carpenter the Elder, Bishop of Worcester and served in
the same Church at Westbury. Richard Carpenter was Canon of Westbury
upon Trin (Tryn) in Gloucestershire and Vicar of Mixbury in Oxfordshire
and possibly in Trottescliffe in Kent. He was Vicar of Ramsbury in
Wiltshire. He was also of Colford parish in Gloucester.
!WILL: The will of Rev. Richard Carpenter mentions sons Robert & Peter.
!SEE: Also: (WN & Q) Wiltshire Notes and Queries, Pages 256-258 and 293
which lists The Wilshire Wills proved in the Prerogative Court of
Canterbury (1383-1558):
"1503 Carpenter, Rychard, D.C.L. and priest, Remmesbury (= Ramsbury,
Wilts) (Wilts?) Mixbury, Oxford. (Oxfordshire) 25 Blamyr."
There are two other CARPENTER notes in the above record. They read:
"1524 Carpenter, als. Morecock, Roger, Hornyngesham, Wilts. F. 31
Bodfelde." "1547 Carpenter, sir Thomas, priste, Cathedral of Sarum. F.
10 Allen."
The 1547 year note probably refers to this Richard's grandson. The "F."
notes represent the books or records the references were found in. The
1524 year note may refer to a son not listed in his will. The
descendants of Roger claim a coat of arms identical from Rev. Richard
Carpenter.
!Because Richard Carpenter was a Catholic Priest, his coat of arms of
three cross crosslets, derived from John Carpenter the Younger of London
would pass down to his descendants with a vertical green bend sinister.
Even though priests were required to be celibates, it was not unusal in
those times for church officials of all ranks to have families named in
their wills, though of course no wife was named.
!His Coat-of-Arms were probably granted when he was at Coleford, Newland
parish, Gloucester County. See page 356 in the book, Carpenter Family
in America, by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901. (or this was is son or
grandson?)
!Some speculation was that his wife's name was Susan Trevelian.

I will be visiting both London and Oxford next week - with an emphasis (among
lots of other places) on Westminster Abbey. Having been there before, we do
not need to concentrate on any truly "touristy" spots but wondered if there
are places to visit that are Carpenter-related.
I just found the links of my family into the Rehoboth line.
