Season's Greetings All!
Published in the Genealogical and Historical column
of the Wantage Recorder newspapers dated 18 May 1934
and 25 May 1934 - editted by Charles Stickney, written by
W. J. Coulter in his series on the Westbrook Family is
this transcription of the Benjamin Carpenter Bible presented
to the Minisink Valley Historical Society by Mrs Benj. Van
Fleet, Jan 30, 1920:
This self-interpreting bible containing the sacred text of the
old and new testaments by the late Reverend John Brown,
Minister of the Gospel, Haddington, NY printed by Hodge &
Campbell and sold at their respective bookshops MDCCXCII.

his and his wife's tombstone down near the Tri State Point Monument
at the very tip of Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Jervis, NY

Margaret Carpenter died Aug. 13, 1853.

Benjamin Manley Gibbs died Nov. 19, 1863, Thursday.
Cateham (Katherine) Carpenter deid Nov. 13, 1876.
Benjamin Carpenter died April 20, 1878.
Jonas Gibbs died April 20, 1891.
We have no further record on the Carpenter family."
The above transcription is exactly as it appears in the
newspaper - it may be copied to the Carpenter-L
mailing list. I do not see a marriage of a Carpenter
to a Gibbs or Campbell in the Sussex county civil
register which suggests the marriages took place
in Orange County, NY.
Dear Howard,
There are no Veens listed in the Carpenter Memorial by AB Carpenter; there
are about 150 James Carpenters listed, too many for me to look up, and there
are no John Coles listed.
You might try contact John Carpenter in CA, via the
CARPENTER-L(a)rootsweb.com
list. He has a very comprehensive data file and is usually very helpful.

A few more names will perhaps be added to this list, therefore
I will wait a few more days before beginning. Each letter
will be entitled 'Carp Medieval' and numbered sequentially. Feel free

I am very new to this list and hope another Carpenter reseearcher can help me.
I am seeking information on my ggggg-grandfather, Ashmon Carpenter (born 23
Dec 1752, died 3 Oct 1829 in Hardyston, Sussex County, NJ). He had a son who
was also named Ashmon Carpenter. He was born 25 Sep 1771 and died 28 Mar 1841.
In later generations this unusual first name was spelled Ashman.
Ashmon, Jr., had a daughter, Phebe Jane who was born in 1806 and died in
1840 in or near Shickshinny, Pa. She married David McDaniels, son of
Joseph McDaniels and Jane Newman, 9 Dec 1826 in Sussex County, NJ.
David McDaniels was born in 1805 in New Jersey and died Feb 1889 at 38 N.
Charlotte St., Lancaster, Pa.They had the following children: Ann Elizabeth,
Phebe Jane and Joseph R. (twins), Ashman Carpenter, and James.
Please email me directly if you see any connections. Thank you.
For those of you who haven't found this site yet. Just run across it.
Might find your relative's name listed next to Washington..........Jay

Cheez! If Byron is 101 years old, he lived in three different centurys
regardless if it matches ANY calendar!
Happy birthday Byron!
Another George Carpenter
(from Illinois City, Ill.)
I would say that Byron can choose his calendar, as many people around the
world have done over the centuries. Considering the flabby calculations
that have gone into calendar design, some of which you have brought out, it
seems to me only fair that we be allowed to call it as we choose. (I'm
still trying to get the Russian Revolutions straight in my mind's
calendar.)
So here's my personal view. Say Jesus of Nazareth was born in what we
would now call 1 BC. (I understand it may be as much as 6 or 7 years off,
but I will go with one.) That would mean that Anno Domini (beginning with
his birth) would be a year earlier. By my own personal calendar, that
would mean that this coming January 1 will actually be 2001 years after the
birth of Christ, so that anyone who was born in 1898 would have lived from
1899 into 2001. Now I'm happy. Of course, if my dates are a bit off, feel
free to make adjustments. I am naming my own new personal calendar the
Byronian Calendar for obvious reasons, and will celebrate this great event
of a change in millennia with glee.
I will go Gregorian again only starting on Dec. 31, 2000. :-)
BTW, Bob, I hope I haven't asked you this before, and if I did, please
ignore it, but are you by any chance Robert, the son of my Uncle Richard of
South Dakota?

Dear Catherine,
Well, that is a pretty interesting note for me. I have been trying to solve
my Moses Carpenter (b about 1750) problem for over 15 years. The ABCarpenter
Memorial lists him as being the son of a Ruth Coe and John Carpenter ;and
nicely pulls together a bunch of children for him. There are some glaring
errors in the book re. this family, and I have never been able to validate
the heritage.
My Moses married a NJ, Elizabeth Runyon gal, dau of Richard of Morris Co. I
have always wondered how he met and married a NJ girl. We have not found
that marriage but have the baptism of his daughter, Goshen Pres. Church 1775.
Moses bought property in Orange Co. from Samuel Sayer of Morris Co.
With all of his NJ connections, I have wondered if he could have been from a
NJ Carpenter family. There was a Ruth Coe in Morris Co, but she married a
Dickenson. But, there were Coes in NJ.
Along with my research I find Moses Carpenter, Michael Dekay and ---Kerr
giving a mortgage to George Lucky. I have tried to figure out how he might
fit in with the DeKay family, but never found him related. Later he gives a
mortgage to Morrises who have a mother who was born DeKay and presently (ab
1790) is Jane Everet. (another DeKay connection).
Additionally an old genealogy query asks if Joseph Carpenter and Ruth Coe are
his parents or grandparents.
Methinks, I need to try to learn more about the NJ Carpenters. I trust it is
still OK to forward this to the Carpenter list.
Thank you so much,
Phoebe

==================================
Sorry, that just isn't true. While it may be easy to think of the 100
years from 1900 through 1999 as "the Century" - and ABC, ESPN, and the
Disney Corporation are doing their best to sell it that way, it just
isn't so.
If Byron is living on January 1, 2001, then he will have lived in 3
different centuries. Of course it really doesn't make that much
difference, a life span of 100 years plus is an accomplishment no matter
what labels are put on the years. Happy holidays.

With all the recent discussion of Carpenters, I thought it was a good
time to ask if anyone has any information on my ggg-grandmother, Phebe
Jane Carpenter. She was born in 1806 (in NJ, I think) and died in 1840
in Pa (buried in Shickshinny, PA). On Dec 9, 1826 she married David
McDaniels in Sussex County, NJ. I have info I'm willing to share on her
descendants, but not a clue about her parents, etc. Any help will be
much appreciated.

To the people who have asked for Byron Carpenter's address in order to
send him a Christmas card, you are very kind
It is P. O. Box 270, Washington, Mo. 63090

then lived in 3 Centuries!
Thank you for your kindness,

Georgiana m John H. Carpenter son of Lewis and Georgiana (Wood) Carpenter
2. Louisa Dixon b. Rochester, NY 1841, dau of Wm. and Jane (Roberts) Dixon,

I do not know anything more about these people. They were of interest to me
because I am researching both the Thompson and Carpenter families.
I like to share with you whatever I find. Usually I do not know anything
about them, but hope the data will help some one. Occasionally I receive an
e-mail which does not from an address I do not recognize that does identify
the place and person on the subject line. I will not open an e-mail that
does not in some manner indicate to me that it is genealogy because of all
the rumors, etc. re. viruses that can now enter via e-mail, not just
downloads.
I hope this is helpful to somebody.
