Hi John:
Here are two items folowing-up on recent list traffic:
1. Thanks for posting the 1732 will. The scanning resulted in a couple
of "scan-o's" but the sense and meaning is unaffected.
2. your 11/20 posting to Phoebe w/r her query on the Joseph (ABC #91)
mortgage includes (once again) new-to-me spouse info:
a) That his father Samuel (ABC #27) married a Sarah (b.1670)
b) That Joseph (ABC #91) married Susanna Bradner of Cape May
Re the latter, there are some conflicts in the data. If Susanna Bradner
was born 1715 and married Joe in 1789 she cold scarcely have borne him any
children at all...much less 6 or 11! (Moreover, the will names 6 adult
children at the date of marriage.) These data must be from competing
sources and theories; would you provide them?

The Lincolnshire Carpenters are the most important group of all. Their
members can be included in the later Holborn Carpenters. They can be
connected to the Richard Carpenter that must be the father of John Carpenter
Town Clerk of London. Their earliest activities begin in the Spalding and
Holbeach area of Lincolnsire. As you will see Spalding is their identifiable
place of residence by the very early 1300s. Spalding and Holbeach are
important to the merchant Carpenters for their proximity to the commercial
city of Boston and its fairs, the whole general area consisting of about a
35 km. long and equally wide convenient bay called The Wash. Not far are
their Charpenter relatives in Norwich. Also accessible by sea are the Low
Country ports, cities and markets that they no doubt frequented, the
locations of their cloth-merchant Carpentier realtives in Douai, Arras and
Ypres.
In 1220(Regis Roll, 1220, p. 258) their names first appear with a
Gilbert of Ghent (Gilibertus de Gaunt) in a disagreement with a Count
William of Albamarl (Willemum comitem Albamarl). The immediate point of
interest is of course the Flemish Gilbert. The Carpenter associates of
Gilbert from Ghent are Waleramus Carpuntarius de Wappelade or Walter
Carpenter from Whaplode, an area just outside Spalding. Also named as a
brother of Walter is a Ralph, both specified as sons of Gaufridi de Holebech
or Geoffrey of Holebeach, another nearby town to Spalding. The Ralph named
in this document must be a different individual than the Norfolk Ralph
Carpenter mentioned previously. Norfolk Ralph must be an uncle. Geoffrey
Carpenter of Lincoln is the best documented of all and I will introduce him
in the sequel to this letter. As I have mentioned earlier, volume two of
Except e Rotulus Finium, lists Lincolnshire Geoffrey Carpenter as a son of
Adam. The 1268 date of the listing make the identification a bit
problematic. Summing up then Adam could be the father of Ralph and the
Norwich/Norfolk Carpenters, and also father of Geoffrey and the
Spalding/Lincoln Carpenters, in the first half of the 1200s.

My difficulty is that I am not very smart. I hadnt
realized that the old misinformation about a Maurice Carpender found in
Edward Carpenters Samuel Carpenter
And his Descendants had finally been discounted. I was
trying, in obtuse fashion, to resolve the problem one way or the other. I am
heartened to see you had come to the same conclusion long ago.
I am also pleased to see Tony in England making creative use of data I have
humbly presented. He is truly a remarkable individual.

Dear Bruce,
I have been pondering how you "discover" something you have had for
months. Tony Carpenter in the UK sent you the copy of what he found of
the Visitation at St. Briavels from the Record Office.
First you find an early Maurice in a land record. Then he is
unimportant member of a larger family. Then he is a blunder. Now with
"new" data you have had for months you "discover" another Maurice (your
circa 1500) that implies the Maurice b. abt 1280 (your circa 1300) may
have been a 19th century mistake.
The Maurice Carpender of St. Briavels born circa 1480 descended from
earlier Carpenters with the same Coat of Arms. Remember that in 1440
Bishop John Carpenter had a similar Coat of Arms placed in a Church
about 40 or so miles away.
This information is not brand new, it has been available for years in
the IGI. If you go to the International Genealogical Index (IGI) and
look for Maurice Carpender circa 1500 you will find him at St. Briavels,
Glouscester, England.
I hate to even mention it, but I have found some 7 Maurice Carpender or
Carpenter name variants with different dates. Could these be mistakes
also?

Radulfi Carpentarii (Ralph Carpenter) left a good many records of himself in
the very early 1200s in Norfolk England. His exact place of habitation in
Norfolk is left unstated, but enough circumstantial evidence exists to leave
little doubt. He appears in land dispositions in areas like Halvirihate or
Halvergate, and Sparham, areas, which circle about the city of Norwich
itself. In 1225 he appears with a group of people against a Stephano de
Sparham and Huberto de Nereford. His group of companions goes a long way in
defining Ralph, with names like Margeria de Cressy, Gilebertus Gelay and
Robertus le Fraunceis. Ralph is a foreigner as are his friends. Margaret of
Crecy, the first listed and principal personage in the Royal Court
land-suit, seems certainly a person of aristocratic connections-a woman with
her own land and financial interests (Regis Rolls, Henry III, 1225, no.
332). In later history the Carpentier family would have its own
Carpentier-Crecy line, though seemingly later than the date of this document
(see DuChesne, p. 739). Ralph appears in other cases with Willelmi le
Charpenter. In one case Williams son John is stated. Early land documents
are usually careful to state any father-son relationship, thus William may
have been Ralphs brother. Cases involving a Ralph Carpenter appear at this
same time in Herefordshire and Suffolk, and parallel the activities of
previous discussed Adam Carpenter. Ralph cannot be put in the same category
as Adam Carpenter, who by the scale of his land holdings, seems an extremely
wealthy and well connected individual indeed. Ralph must have had a
secondary relationship to Adam, a younger brother or son. Certainly
magistrum Adam Carpentarium had most of the economic power of this group,
and the prestige that would go with it. Ralph Charpenter however, provides
us with an important glimpse at the early Carpenter social and business
circle and the many implications that would accompany that.

I am slowly going backwards.
In the last two weeks I have found my great grandfather, Jesse C. Carpenter of
Tioga Center, NY - married to Anna E. Watkins (who was from Jasper, NY but
born in England in 1844).
They had five children -
Minnie
Jesse
Ida
Edwin
Frederick (my grandfather)
Jesse was born somewhere in New Jersey in 1837.
Does anyone have a link to this Jesse? I do not know his parents' names or
where in New Jersey they were from.
Thanks for all your help.

I will post my brick wall again in the hopes that someone who knows of
Angeline can give me some info.
Angeline was my gr. grandmother, supposedly b. in IL in 1853, d. in Madison
Co., AR. In between, she supposedly lived in NE for a while. She m. an "old
man Magee", which is all I know about him. She and Mr. Magee and child
Katherine came to Madison Co. AR on the run. He died, and she m. my gr.
grandfather, Andrew Jackson "Jack" Patrick. When her children were old
enough to read, she burned a trunk full of papers so they wouldn't know her
past.
Does any of this sound familiar to anybody? I think her parents were from KY
and TN, according to census. Any help appreciated!
