I am looking for information on my 3rdG grandfather William Carpenter
(born 1817 in Woodstock, CT). He married Adeline Wakefield in 1840
and had a son Jerome W. Carpenter in Thompson, CT. Adeline died soon
after. I believe Jerome moved to Woonsocket RI and married Frances M.
Briggs. William's line goes back to the Rehoboth MA William Carpenter
of 1605. Any information or additional sources would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Looking for the parents of Elisha CARPENTER.
Elisha was born before 1755 perhaps in RI, m Cynthia SMITH abt 1790 prob in
Sullivan, NY, 1800 in Lumberland, Ulster, NY, abt 1805 in North Towanda,
Bradford, PA, d bef 1812. Children of Elisha and Cynthia: Hanna b abt
1800, d 1849; Mahala b 20 Oct 1801 d 1888; Jane G b 1804, d 1883; Garner d
1834; Elisha; Tamer; Elinor; Rebecca; Cynthia.
One reseacher has Elisha's parents as Benjamin CARPENTER and Eleanor OLIN.
This would have Elisha b 23 Aug 1748 in East Greenwich, Kent, RI, and
marrying Lydia GREENE 20 Jul 1767. But then, because Lydia later appears
in census records without a husband, he would have divorced/abandoned her
before 1790 and moved from East Greenwich, RI to Sullivan, NY. This
conclusion, Elisha is the son of Benjamin and Eleanor, is based on
children's and grandchildren's responses to the census question of where
their parents were born.
Anyone have any other information? Anything that can be documented?

I received a snail mail inquiry from the following person:
Winton Cain
1200 Briarcliff Rd.
Warner Robins, GA 31088
He said that he planned to write a book about his wife's Carpenter line.
>From the original Germana colonist, it is: John; Andrew; Cornelius; Jonas;
Willis Horace. He said that Willis Horace Carpenter was his wife's
g-grandfather, and "he left Madison County, VA in 1857 and moved to
Oktibbeha Co., Miss. with his wife Caroline Murray and Son Vivian Mandeville
Carpenter." He is familiar with the Germanna Foundation and said he had
most of the available records.
He said that his book will be entitled, "Carpenter Ancestors and Cousins"
and he asked if I knew of "unpublished sources which would give me some more
detailed information about Carpenter men that I am writing about."
Apparently he is not on the web. If anyone can help him, write him
directly. Or, I could put what you say in my letter to him, as I have not
answered him yet. If anyone knows of a Carpenter web site, I will give it
to him and suggest that he go to a library and connect to the web.
Reply directly to Mr. Cain, or e mail to: germanna(a)summit.net, and we will forward the information to him.
Thank you.

My grangfather was from Scotland. Started working in Michigan
mines (entered country thru Canada) and worked his way down to KY
then even Georgia. Most industry ran on coal.
John
I was wondering if anyone knows of a website that was about coal mining in south
western KY.
My husband's grandfather was a coal miner. He supposedly was born in Hopkins
county, KY in 1872, but I cannot find him in the 1880 Census of Kentucky, at
all. I even checked the soundex for TN yesterday and still did not find him. Why
were people drawn to the coal mines in KY? do you know where most of them came
from? Were they Germans? Did a lot of them go to Illinois to mines there? Andy
Carpenter had a stillborn child in 1812 and on the vital stats, it lists him
(Andy, the father) as being born in Christian County, KY, the child in Hopkins
Co., KY. . I can find only 2 possiblilties of Andy Carpenter, age 7 or 8 in the
whole state of KY on the Soundex. Both were in Madison County, KY. Any help
appreciated.

In doing the transcription for this Orphan school, I came across these
children.
Carpenter, Henry W., DOB 3/8/1859, admitted 9/1/1871 from Titusville (another
orphanage?), was discharged on his 16th birthday; 3/8/1875. His home address
was listed as Oswayo, remarks "Farming."
Carpenter, Rome E., DOB 1/18/1857, admitted 10/1/1867, was discharged on his
16th birthday, 1/18/1873. Home address was listed as Oswayo, remarks
"Farming."
Carpenter, Lucy Z., DOB 2/24/1863, admitted 9/1/1871, her home address was
Oswayo.
Carpenter, Harriet E., DOB 5/9/1861, admitted 9/1/1871, from Titusville, her
home address was Oswayo.
Carpenter, Ruth E., DOB 1/18/1857 (twin to Rome E.), admitted 10/1/1867 (same
as Rome E.). Was discharged on her 16th birthday, 1/18/1873. Listed her home
address at Ellsburg with a remark "Married Charles Rye."
I would think these children were all from the same family.

Who was the husband of Mary Jane Frances, who was m about 1870, TN or KY. Had
son, Andrew Jackson Carpenter, b 1872 in Hopkins Co., KY according to records.
Can find no Carpenters in 1870 or 1880 Census of Hopkins Co., so he may have been
born in TN. Is this the same Mary Jane Carpenter that is in the 1880 Census in
Madison county, KY? (Mary Jane was the daughter of James Frances and Nancy
Keeling, and was born in Todd co., KY)
Thanks for any help. We visited my husband's cousin in Madisonville, Ky. They
had a picture of Andrew and his parents or inlaws. They promised to have some
copies made for us and my husband was so excited. They never sent the pictures,
even tho we have asked about them a couple of times. Sooooooo disappointed. We
has no pictures of them.

For all of you researching the descendents of Reuben Carpenter of
Edgefield District, South Carolina, you should try to get a copy of a
approximately 100 page book, cardstock cover, stapled and taped, that
was done by Mattie Belle Carpenter Ross, 1974, "My Ancestry." I am not
sure if she is still living or not. Not sure how long I have had the
book and don't remember how much it was. Did get it from the author.
Mattie Belle Carpenter Ross, 2114 Oakland Drive, Cleveland,
Tennessee 37311
She was born in 1904 in Lineville, Clay Co., Alabama. She retired from
teaching in 1970.
She has her Carpenter line coming from Reuben and Thomas who were sons
of Reuben, Sr. of Edgefield District, South Carolina. They migrated
through Lincoln Co., Ga. and on to Walton Co., Ga. also Henry Co., Ala.
Also back to New York State.
I don't remember how much of her Carpenter connection I was able to
give her from SC. She did her book in about three years and I have not
checked all of her research for accuracy.
She does NOT connect my Adam and Owen Carpenter from Moore/
Cumberland Co., NC to this Reuben or the other North Carolina
Carpenters. There was also a Dennis Carpenter from Edgefield to
Montgomery Co, Ala. early with a stop off in Augusta, Georgia. Not in
her book.
Some people e-mailed me after my posting to the Carpenter list on my
Adam Carpenter from Moore/Cumberland to Edgefield Dist., South
Carolina. However, somehow their messages came through without a return
e-mail address on them.
If you want a copy of this book and the author is deceased and no
more copies are available, and you can't get one any other way, I can
have copies made for you for either about $15 or $20.00. Depends on
whether I have to pay ten or fifteen cents per page. It does not show a
copyright. You would be paying me for copying costs. I have to drive
one way 35 miles to get stuff like this done and I try to take care of
other business while I am there. That would include postage and mailing
envelop and something to hold the pages together. Of course, thanks to
a woman in California who never paid me for research, I am no logner a
trusting soul. I would need your check, money order first, before I
make copies.

John:
I was reading through Domesday Book and found an additional reference
to Durand Carpenter that you seemed to miss, or at least
didn't include in your report to me. This particular reference
seemed to me to be of importance to Carpenter history.
It appears on p. 95 of the Then and Now edition for Moulham and
reads, "Durand Carpenter, the king's servant".
The fact that a Carpenter was a personal servant of
William the Bastard was a complete surprise to me. One of the
other references to Durand, and one you had pointed out to
me, reads "Durand the Carpenter" on p. 93 for Affington.
There is another reference for Durand on p. 96 for Wilkswood.
He is referred to as "Durand Carpenter" there.
Other references using the expression "the king's servant"
can be found for William the Usher under Bolham on
p. 77. The terms "the usher" and the "the carpenter" are clear
in their discriptions of household duties. Clearly Durand was
a working axe and chisel carpenter.
Another important reference is on p. 48 for
Waterbeach which reads, "2 of the king's carpenters". These
references and many more like them are indications that household
servants were receiving lands from King William.
The other two Carpenters in Domesday, Stephen and Rayner, are unaccounted
for
in respect to class and profession. I suspect however that they were
carpenters by trade themselves or at least related to Durand.
I don't want to in any way condescend to Durand. He did very well for
himself
with his three land holdings in Dorcet. He must have produced a lineage
of later descendants like the other "Butlers" , "Bakers", "Goldsmiths" and
"Chamberlains" who had humble beginnings in the King's household.
We cannot make any connection of these Carpenters and carpenters to
other individuals in England or on the continent. However these first
references
to the surname Carpenter give complete support to the tradtional
"artisan" origin of the Carpenter family name.
Sincerely
Bruce E. Carpenter
Hello to All !
I have been moving & trying to keep up with work at the same time so
please excuse for just reading my CARPENTER Digests tonight.
First let me say that the first post I made, in response to an inquiry,
was to possibly help give a lead. The information I posted was shared
to me by Beth. Her uncle wrote about the LaGRONES FAMILY who had
connections to CARPENTERS. This is not my line. (That I know of yet,
smile).
Since so many of you seem to have more info on this line, I am surprised
no one posted it for the original inquiree.
On a personal note, let me say to Beth that if I misinterpreted something
from the info you sent me, I am very sorry. If you correct the outline I
sent you and send it back to me, I will make the changes.
Lastly, I have been trying to find connections to Thomas CARPENTER b. abt
1790 and lived in Henry Co. GA. Some of his descendants settled in ALA
and one married a WOLF which is also in the LaGRONE line.
Thanks to all of you who posted and emailed information. When I get
moved and settled I will possibly be able to put some of it together and
make some links. For information on my line, please visit my home page.
Respectfully Submitted,
Donna

Hello List-
This will probably sound like someone just trying to link to someone
"known", but I swear it's the truth! I don't know for sure which side
he's related on, but my Grandpa Thomas Bea Carpenter is related to Johnny
"Bench". --you know the baseball player? They're cousins. And boy they
could pass for twins! Anyway, does anyone have a CARPENTER line that
includes Johnny "Bench"? My Grandpa Carpenter lives in OK and I live in
NM. He's actually my step-grandpa. But our families are related in other
ways (through) his wife. Anyway, long story...
Thanks for any help.
