The Amos Carpenter book has errors. I believe that there is a generation
missing somewhere. There have been posts from descendants of Solomon
Carpenter. Do any of you have facts from sources other than the Amos
Carpenter book?
I am trying to find which John Carpenter married Ruth Coe. They may have
married in Jamaica, NY and later moved to Goshen, Orange County, NY. One of
their children was Moses Carpenter, born about 1750. John Carpenter and
Ruth Coe may have been married 1735. Many records from Jamaica, NY seem to
have been burned so it is difficult to find out much.
Someone mentioned that there is a corrected English ancestry for William
Carpenter from Rehoboth. I believe by a Raymond Carpenter? Where can this
be found?

Hello Carpenter Researchers,
I'm tracing my CARPENTER Ancestors in Rutland and Addison Counties in
Vermont. I'm seeking the ancestry of my great-grandfather Julius A.
Carpenter who d. in Fair Haven, Rutland, VT. July 19,1901. I believe he
may have been born in Ferrisburg, Addison, VT Aug 18,1843 to William and
Rhoda Carpenter. His wife was Eliza A. Sears; b. June 8, 1845; d.1905 in
Fair Haven, Rutland, VT. I believe he may have been active in the slate
industry in Fair Haven. Does anyone have any information on this family?

Hi, if referring to "the book" being talked about here, (Rehoboth), it only
encompasses the famiuly of William Carpenter of Rehoboth..over 800 pages.
It does not go into ZIMMERMAN /CARPENTER family.

CAROLYN:Re SOLOMON CARPENTER
When I first started CARPENTER, I became a customer of a lady:ROSEMARY
BATCHELDER in MACHIAS,ME.She originally wrote on Col.Solomon of Goshen, then
started a pamphlet called The Epistle. She is an expert on CARPENTER, but
don't know if still"around". You can reach her, address to Machias ,Me. I am
sure she will get it. Their present magazine is called "Second Boat", but as
I say she originally wrote on CARPENTER/BATCHELDER/RICE.
Any help??

from The Carpenter Family News-Journal, June 1973:
Herbert J. Carpenter was one of those men who excelled in nearly everything
he tried. A champion marksman, game hunter and law school graduate, he was
perceptive of both people and events around him. It was this know-how and
sensitivity, combined with a keen mind, which made him see the business
potential of a tiny California desert town in 1936, long before Palm Springs
became renowned as a winter resort frequented by movie stars.
Born Oct. 12, 1893 in Sumner, Iowa, he was the son of Josiah and Mary
Carpenter. He was a descendant of Massachusetts native Obadiah Carpenter, a
Revolutionary War sergeant who died in 1810 at Harford, Pa. Herbert's
Carpenter grandfather had headed westward from Pennsylvania to Illinois.
Herbert spent his childhood in Sumner and was a 1916 graduate of Northwestern
University Law School. His first marriage was to Lottie Coombs Williams, who
died in 1946, and his second wife is Lucinda D. (Kalmbach) Carpenter. For
many years, Mr. Carpenter maintained homes in both Sugar Hill, N.H. and Palm
Springs, Calif.
Shortly after settling at Sugar Hill in the 1930's, Herbert took an active
interest in the village and made facilities of his property available for
raising funds for the Littleton (N.H.) Hospital.
He was interested in sports, particularly skeet & trap shooting. He shot in
Monte Carlo at the famous Live Pigeon Shoot with world champion Walt Warren.
His many New Hampshire prizes included the 1934 state championship. He also
enjoyed fishing, canoe trips and big game hunting. He returned from many
safari with specimens that were mounted for his game room.
"I took a look around Palm Springs and knew the town was going to go," Herb
Carpaenter once said. So, in 1936 he bought "Las Solanitas"- - little
Sunshine Court - -a handful of yellow buildings built before 1920. Palm
Springs' first city hall was housed in one of the little bungalows. The
secret of Herb's success was that he left the court much as it was, adding
more cottages and keeping the old white gateway and such period furnishings
as bathtubs standing on claw & ball feet. He sold tranquility rather than
luxury. Herbert Carpenter was a Palm Springs resident until cancer claimed
his life last July (1972). His widow has just sold their lovely Spanish
home.

Michael,
I have the same info as Carolyn posted. I have the birth date of Dolly
Smith as abt 1744, same as Michael's birthdate but it's probably wrong as
she would have been over 50 yrs. old when she had two last children. I just
pasted it in a little different in case you don't have the line back to Eng.

Have you checked out the book "A GENEALOGICAL HISTORY OF THE REHOBOTH BRANCH
OF THE CARPENTER FAMILY IN AMERICA" written by Amos B. Carpenter Published by
Press of Carpenter & Moprehouse, Amherst, Mass.?
I too am a Carpenter, Donna. I am stuck on my ggggg-grandfather. We know
Thomas Carpenter c.1790 has land records in Georgia but no one seems to be
sure who his father was. It is frustrating. Good luck.

Hello,
I'm also a Carpenter, a couple of times removed. My family of
Carpenters Came from ( possibley from Iowa and then by way of NC,
and Tn) Arkansas. My g grandfather was borned Apr 15,1826, died
Aug 30, 1886, Arkansas.
My question is how did your Melissa Ann wind up in a veteran's
Home and was buried in a Veteran's Cemetary? Was there a division
for women in the service that far back? Or was she admitted to
those places as a widow of a service man? I know that both
widows and unmarried daughters were awarded pensions from the
civil war. I am interested in learning anything about the Civil War and
the Carpenter Family.
Thanks,
Sue Neill
Dr1fter(a)okla.net >>
Hi Sue. I wish I had more information on Melissa Carpenter for you. She
married Edward A. Ehle in 1868 in Medford, Taylor County WI. Census records
1900 show her still in that area (ed 180-17-31) and the 1920 Census shows she
was a resident of the Wisconsin Veteran's Home at that time. For Edward, I
show he was 1890 Clark County, WI veteran.
Old family photos show her standing by Edwards grave, and according to the
brief documentary my uncle made, was buried next to him, at the Veteran's
cemetery in King, WI, as his widow.
With the dates I have gathered, I am hoping for a little time to look more
closely into this area. I show her fathers name was Henry, mother possibly
Nancy but I'm waiting for the source on this. And of course, I'm wondering
how they came to be in Wisconsin, did she have siblings, and the list of
questions goes on. Darcia J.

Darcia,
I am originally from Abbotsford, WI in Clark, Co. Part of
Abbotsford is actually in Marathon Co. also and the county seat, Wausau,
is only about 40 miles away. Abbotsford is also about 15 miles south of
the Taylor Co. seat of Medford. I used to work at the newpaper there. So I
found your search in my area interesting.
Since I am in AZ now, I cannot do a direct search for you, but I am
somewhat familiar with names and when I go home to visit, I may be able to
help a little.
I am not familiar with any Carpenters from Taylor Co. at all today, but
that doesn't mean much.
My grandfather Frank Isaac Carpenter married my Grandmother (Catherine
Pommerich) in Fond du
Lac, but most of there kids and grandkids are living in central WI now. I
have an aunt (Mrs. Mike [Marie Carpenter] Kramer)who lives near there tho'
and will give you her address when
I find it. She looked into my grandmother's side (Pommerich) and so
knows all the ropes on genealogy search and may be willing to help you
there. I am still looking for more info on Frank Isaac also. I know where
he was born in MI, who his parents & siblings were, and that he lived in
Fond du Lac for awhile, but if you ever run across anything in your search
could you let me know? Thanks!
I know this isn't much help, but any connection can lead to something
better!!

Hi Mary, nice to hear from you. I really appreciate your offer of help. Sorry
for delay in getting back to you (inventory)...
Although I only have one Carpenter name at this time (Melissa), I am keeping
all correspondence should something tie in later. The census records place
her in these areas and I have a huge database of the Ehle line, but so many
blanks to fill on the Carpenter side. Yes, I would like the address of your
aunt when you get it, thanks.
Some data I have indicates both the Carpenter and Ehle families lived in Fond
du Lac area, in addition to the Medford area. I will know more when the
information I requested comes back, perhaps documenting the parents name or a
sibling. Should I see anything in Fond du Lac area on your people, I'll pass
it along. Darcia J.
Hi, Our Carpenter family is also from Goshen, Orange Co, NY. THe line according
to Amos B. Carpenter's book:
1) William Carpenter
2) John Carpenter
3) Samuel Carpenter
4) Benjamin Carpenter
5) Sarah Carpenter; m Nathaniel Cooley, probably near Goshen, Orange Co, NY.
Has anyone seen a copy of the book, "The Ancestry & Descendants of Col. Solomon
Carpenter of Goshen, New York", by The Carpenter Family Assn, printed by The
News-Journal, Machias, ME, 1974? Any idea if there are copies of this book
available?
