A lot of Zimmermans who came to America ended up in PA and then seemed to
migrate south. Of course changing their name to Carpenter. I have not done
extensive work on this particular line but suspect your hunches are
correct. If I am able to get any further information I will be sure to let
you know..
As far as the Civil War goes...
Well, being a native Rhode Islander I didn't know much about the South or
it's residents. Until I got drafted into the Vietnam war. I grew up in a
town where there were no blacks either, none in school, none in the
neighborhood.
All that changed during my year in the states and my year in Vietnam.
We chided each other about the Civil War and our origins.. There were the
"hillbilly" jokes and the Yankee jokes. Always with a smile though, nothing
ever serious. We chided about how the civil war was still going on right
there and then between us!! :)
Even at the enlisted mans club in Vietnam the whites would gather together
in their little groups and the blacks in theirs.
Except this one black guy and I, we were friends and hung out together,
along with my other best friend from Winder Georgia along with our other
buddy the big Eskimo
fella from Alaska.
It's amazing how the worst circumstances bring out the best in Americans,
when there is a common enemy we stick together as one.
It's like when you have two brothers that are fighting like heck and you
try to break them up and you end up getting whipped by both of them :)
We all stood together, back to back when the time came, Blacks,Yankees,
Southerners, Red, Yellow, didn't matter, for in that time we were all
brothers.
And still are..........
As far as the Adam and Eve thing, well, I'm not going to go there :)
As some of you know I'm not what you would call a "religious" person,
however something pretty neat happened today.
As maybe some of you also know I divorced 4 years ago this month, my son
who was 15 yrs. old at the time decided to come with me.
Today, after we cooked the turkey dinner and had finished eating, I started
washing the dishes etc.
My son was on his way out to see a friend,he turned and said "Thank you Pop
for always making things right" , I said what do you mean?
He said well, ya know when some guys get divorced they sotra drift away
with friends, girls, drinking, running around etc. He said " You have
always been there, making Thanksgiving dinners, Xmas dinners, all the
holiday stuff, you always make everything "right", you always made the
house a home, thanks for being my dad! "
Well, I guess right there and then I felt just a little "blessed" this
Thanksgiving day and realized I still had a great deal to be thankfull for,
esp. that son!
NOW I can go out and get ripped!!!!! :)
As far as the Vietnam War being wrong, yeah, we were dead wrong, good
soldiers, bad leaders.

Since we all supposedly come from Adam and Eve, I really don't care about
which side of the war your ancestors fought on. The Civil War is OVER.
Please let the dead lie in Peace...and the rest of us also.
I'm looking for my ancestor: William Carpenter b. 1805 KY, d. abt 1875
Prentiss Co. MS. Marr 1826 AL to Elizabeth Marlor.
I subscribe to the Germanna mailing list and because of a "clue" in one of
their post I ordered Record #11 "The Germanna Record" which gives the
descendant of John Carpenter (Zimmermann) born in Germany abt 1700.
Has anyone done any extensive work with this record and/or followed any of
these descendents down futher than in the book? I have a "gut" feeling the
Carpenter families in NE Mississippi (OLD Tishomingo co.) may have come from
some of this line. My reasoning is the name patterns that are being carried
down in the family: William, Susannah, John, Andrew, Joseph, Solomon, Moses,
Rhoda, Alexander, Mahala, AND Wilhite or which could have showed up as Wilbur
Hoyt in one of my gggguncles.
Other surnames that must have lived in and around the same areas are: Willis,
Lambert, Hickman, Counce and Estess.
Anyone out there can help me with this?

Just wanted to wish everyone on the list a Happy Thanksgiving Day!
Now that my fever has broken I might be able to taste the food today :)
Since my son and I are all that's left of this Carpenter family I will be
roasting a 10-lb turkey. The smallest I have ever cooked but maybe it will
be better than those big 24lb birds of the past?
It's a relatively cool morning here in central Florida at 6am it's 55
degrees, humidity is high ( as usual) at 96%. Expecting highs in the middle
to upper 70's.
It's amazing how ALL the stores are open today, our local K-Mart at 8am.
I think it's nice to have the convenience of being able to shop but feel
it's not fair to the people who have to work.
Well, since my ISP, IBM net has been down since 9pm last night and still is
I don't know when I'll be able to send this out but will keep trying.
Again, hope you all have a great holiday!
Chuck

Yep You stirred up something lol
Terri
My father was Stephen Van Rensselaer Carpenter. He was born in Florida and
died in Mississippi? Is that southern enough?
(By the way, his great-grandfather was Amos Carpenter, b. 1787 in Rensselaer
County New York, migrated to Ohio. His son was the first Stephen Van
Rensselaer Carpenter, b. 1821 in Licking Co., Ohio and died in 1899. His
widow brought her grown children south to Miami. Son Van Rensselaer
Carpenter, b. in Ohio in 1861 and died 1918 in Florida, was my grandfather.
Does anyone know my Amos?)

And I have written a book on these families. It is CARPENTERS A PLENTY.
It traces the Carpenters who originally settled in the Lincoln Co. area
of North Carolina and eventually migrated throughout the south and west.
Yes, I do believe that you stirred up a southern hornet's nest.

thats puts brother against brother for political gains is wrong. We went to

I am sorry but the county of NC is unknown. Searching for the ancestry of
Willis CARPENTER, son of John CARPENTER and Jane TUCKER. Willis was born in
NC c. 1780. He married in Grainger Co. TN to Elizabeth (Betsy) ROSS daughter
of Frances and Catherine (Katie) ROSS, May 01, 1813 in Grainger Co. TN. I
have thought that it was possible that John CARPENTER was in the REV WAR and
obtained land in TN as a result. Willis served in the TN VOLS in the Creek
and Indian War of 1813. Their oldest son, John C. Carpenter was born c 1814
in TN. They came to ALA about 1820. Willis' brothers and sister as was told
by family history was Martin, Sam, and Rita. I would appreciate help in
locating this family or the family of FRANCIS ROSS.
Thanks in advance. Mary W. Glenn

I know very little about my Carpenter heritage. If anyone can assist me
with any leads to kinships to the following:
Larkin Carpenter is the name of my g grandfather who married Mary Jane
Wright. They had three children: Silas, Cora Sto, and Dora. Cora was my
grandmother whom I never knew. She died at the age of 37 after her 7th
child was born. She married David L. Saunders.

It got nearly to 80 today in West Texas. Our AZ
