Doris A. CAROTHERS, 80, of Pennknoll Village, Bedford, formerly of
Saxton, died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Pennknoll Village
following an extended illness. She was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Hopewell,
Bedford County, the daughter of David Porter and Ruby (Whisel) Gates,
both deceased. She was united in marriage to Paul "June" Carothers Aug.
6, 1944, at the Saxton Church of God. Mr. Carothers preceded her in
death April 6, 1992. Mrs. Carothers is survived by John Smith of
Baltimore, Md., who was reared in the Carothers' home. A sister, Dorothy
Lhuillier of Sherrill, N.Y., and one nephew survive. She was preceded in
death by an infant son and another son, David P. Carothers. Mrs.
Carothers was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Saxton.
She was active with the Saxton Community Library, served as a member of
Saxton Borough Council for several years and served on the board of
directors for the Saxton Community Swimming Pool. Mrs. Carothers
graduated from Robert P. Smith High School, Yellow Creek,in 1939. She
was employed as a secretary for White, Jenkins and Johnson Insurance
Company, Saxton, retiring in 1989. She enjoyed crossword puzzles,
reading and playing bingo. Funeral services were held today (Monday) at
2 p.m. at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Charles
Davis officiating. Interment was made in Grandview Cemetery, Saxton.
