I am trying to find the father of my ggggrandmother, Mary Carothers. She was born about
1800 (possibly SC?) and married William Harder about 1820 in Hickman County, Tennessee.
Spence's history of Hickman County, Tennessee, states that William Harder married the
daughter of his neighbor ____ Carothers. According to the 1836 tax list for Hickman
County, William Harder, James Carothers, and George Carothers were neighbors.
According to the Hickman County Tennessee History published in 1993, and a pedigree chart
found in the Centerville Library of Hickman County, John Carothers, born about 1708 in
Scotland and Content (last name unknown) were married in Dumfreshire, Scotland and came to
America as early as 1736. Their son, William Carothers, born in 1736 in Cumberland
County, Pennsylvania, married Sarah Harvey. William was a private in the Revolutionary
War from North Carolina. William Carothers died in 1811 in Wilkes County, Georgia.
William and Sarah Carothers had at least three sons, Andrew, William, and Samuel, and
several daughters.
Spence's History also mentions that these three brothers, Andrew, William and Samuel
Carothers came from Georgia and settled in Hickman County Tennessee around 1807. Andrew
is the primitive Baptist preacher who was the father of William Howell Carothers.
Spence's History also mentions Naomi, a sister to the three brothers.
Your listing of William Carothers' (born 1736 in PA) children includes Andrew,
William, Samuel and Naomi. You also include a son James and a daughter Nancy Jane. It
only seems logical that I have a connection somehow to this family. It has been
speculated that James is the father of my Mary Carothers, as he was a neighbor to William
Harder. What do you know about James? Or, maybe the son, William, could be Mary's
father?
One name in Nancy Jane's family especially intrigues me. One of her children is named
Pleasant Green Thomas. One of Mary Carothers Harder's children was named Pleasant
Green Harder. He was my gggrandfather. Do you know anyone who might have additional
information on this family?
Thank you for any help you might give.
