Joyce: It seems to be difficult to find information on the Carothers line
and I
doubt if I can be much help. My mother's maiden name was Carothers
and I had difficulty tracking down information on her father and those
before him. What I did find was that there were a fair number of Carothers
who migrated to Michigan from NY via Ohio. My ancestors settled in
Hillsdale County, MI and later in Stanton, MI. I have found a large number
of Carothers in PA as well. I have had little luck with replies on message
boards. I guess there is just not that many Carothers in comparison to
others. None of the surnames you mention are familiar to me. Phelps and
Whaley seem to turn up in my line frequently. Incidentally, although my
grandfather used the name Riley Carothers, both he and my g grandfather both
had the given name of Ralzemon. Good luck in your search.
