I am looking for information on a Clement Carney born in NY to
Thomas
Carney. He and wife moved to MI in the early 1860 or late 1850's. They
lost three sons in the Civil War, Andrew, Mason and George. I am interested
in locating the son of Mason & Jane.
Mason married Jane Whetherbe. they had a child named William born about
1860.

Shirley,
Have you checked the pension records in the National Archives? If Mason
left a widow, then it's likely she applied for a pension if she didn't
re-marry. It's also possible the somn may have applied for a pension. A
check of the Civil War soldiers database at
ancestry.com gives the
following for him:
Mason Carney

If you submit a copy of form NATF 80 to the National Archives, they'll
copy it for you (for a fee). You can get copies of both pension
files (much more useful for genealogy) and compiled service record
(mostly military informaton). I'd recommend getting both. The pension
files often contain detailed information about family members.
Instructions on obtaining the NATF form 80 are available at:
http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrfrms.html
You must submit the paper forms, they're not available yet online.
Trusting this helps.

Michael Kearney
(g-grandson of another Michigan volunteer).
