There is a small village not far from Bunratty castle called Cearnaigh prefixed by a g as
it is a place name. The village has a small bridge over a river of the same name. The name
is derived from that of a past local sept clan. This village is more commonly known as
Sixmilebridge hence loads of tourists turn up to see this wonder only to find a tiny stone
bridge instead. When I was last their someone had written on the sixmilebidge road sign
'only joking'. In Cashel there used to be a Kearney castle hotel but I do not
know the history of what was a formidable building. There was a migration of another
Kearney clan to the area in the past from the west and were of the dalCas. Throughout
Ireland there are many places called Kearney or Carney for example Liscarney in Sligo or
Kearney village in Co Down a name inherited from another Mac Cearnaigh clan ( a sept clan
of the O'Hanlons) who once ruled the area until the de Savages, Anglo Normans came and
displaced them. In the Mour!
ne mountains a very large isolated boulder is known locally as Pat Kearney's big
stone... and theres more ! Donal Ua Cearnaigh (Cenel Ferghusa) let us not forget Saint
Cearnaigh everyone else has.
