Hi Larry,
Welcome to the world of genealogy. My Carney's are in NY and NJ so I won't be
much of a help to you in that respect. But to get started - send for a copy of the
application for your father's birth certificate. It will list his mother's name
and in most states her maiden name, her age at the timeof birth, your grandparents
address, etc. Send for a copy of your father's birth certificate. Always start
backwards from the most recent relatives. Start collecting death certificates, birth
certificates, marriage certificates, land records, etc. If you know the name of the
church they attended you can start by asking for a copy of your dad's baptismal
record. The church log will list the parent's name and the godparent's names, the
log was not always completely filled out. If you know where they were married the logs may
even help you learn where your grandparents were born and their parents names.
If none of that helps hopefully you know the town where your father was born and you can
start searching the Census records these are available through state libraries, the Latter
day Saints libraries and the National Archives.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

Hello,
I'm just starting to assemble my family tree, so please forgive any foolish
questions coming from someone new to genealogy.
I'm interested in any information anyone would have regarding the Carney family
in Eckerman, MI. Sylvia A. Carney was married to Earl (not completely sure of
his given name) Carney and they had several children, including Sadie A. Carney,
Beatrice Carney, George Carney and Nelson John Carney. Nelson was born ca.
1917. He would have been married around 1949, and I'm particularly interested
in finding out his first wife's name (she was my grandmother and would have died
around 1950). I know that he lived in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan ca. 1953 where
he had a third son with his second wife.
I appreciate any information anyone has, or any advice that would help me on my
way.
Thanks,
Larry Carney
