Hi All,
My Carney is an Elizabeth KEARNEY born about 1822, in the USA, in Pennsylvania, NY or even
Conneticutt. (Census give a variety of possibilities) She married William Allan in 1841
in Philadelphia, had 3 kids, then they moved to San Francisco where they had 5 more
children.
The church marriage record does not list parents or place of origin or anything helpful,
just the date. The Kearney/Carney name is so common that the 1840 census has several
possibilities-no way to tell which familiy is hers. When her husband died in 1876 still
in California, Elizabeth had the obituary printed in the Philadelphia papers-so they must
have had some relatives still living in the area.
She and William Allan had the following children; William m Ellen ?
John (whom I believe died young)
Mary m Samuel Foster Tilden
Elizabeth m James Kiely
Cecilia (no marriage that I can find)
George m Maggie Darragh
Jane m John Morgan
Amanda m ?
Does anyone out there recognize my Elizabeth? I'd love to know what you know!
Thanks,
Liane

Through his military records I've only just just disovered that my
great
great grandfather Henry Carney was born in the parish of Aglish,
Castlebar Co
Mayo in 1838. He enrolled as a volunteer in South Mayo Rifles
Militia aged 21
Described as having 5ft 5 and a half inches, light grey eyes,
fresh complexion
and occupation Labourer
Released on 6th December 1858 after paying 18s and 6d
Joined 15th Regiment of Foot at Westport in 1858
Married Jane McMAHONE in Dublin 2nd February 1871 in the Catholic
Chapel of
St James Dublin. On his marriage certificate his fathers name
looks very like
'Remegius' Carney.
I have no other information on him, siblings, mother, baptism etc
For more about him and his descendants see my website

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has any
connections to
him, or can tell me more about his family

Hi Larry,
Welcome to the world of genealogy. My Carney's are in NY and NJ
so I won't be much of a help to you in that respect. But to get
started - send for a copy of the application for your father's
birth certificate. It will list his mother's name and in most
states her maiden name, her age at the timeof birth, your
grandparents address, etc. Send for a copy of your father's birth
certificate. Always start backwards from the most recent
relatives. Start collecting death certificates, birth
certificates, marriage certificates, land records, etc. If you
know the name of the church they attended you can start by asking
for a copy of your dad's baptismal record. The church log will
list the parent's name and the godparent's names, the log was not
always completely filled out. If you know where they were married
the logs may even help you learn where your grandparents were born
and their parents names.
If none of that helps hopefully you know the town where your
father was born and you can start searching the Census records
these are available through state libraries, the Latter day Saints
libraries and the National Archives.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
Mary Keller
