Shem was involved in various land transactions in Cherokee Co. with his brothers Edmond
(Edward)and William, and others. Shem recorded a deed Sept.7, 1853 in Cherokee Co. from
George V. Head; he paid $242.00 for the land. Edmond bought land on Dec. 19, 1854 for
$320.00 with Shem as a witness. Shem bought land on Sept. 9, 1853 for $242, and land from
A. and L. Worley on Aug. 30, 1858. Shem purchased 7 acres land from Henry Little for
$35.25 on Dec. 2, 1859. Edmund sold land to Shem, thirty acres, for $310. on Oct. 2,
1862. Shem sold 160 acres land to Allen Sizemore Oct. 12, 1865 for $600. All these
transactions were in Cherokee Co. Shem's land holdings were principally in District
13, Section 2, as were those of his brother Edmond. As summarized in the Lott Carney
Family book, 1970, by Charles O. Walker:
Book O, pg. 534:
Received lot 229/13/2 from George V. Head on 9/7/1853 for $242.
Book Q (lost book):
Shem Carney from A. and L. Worley on 8/30/1858.
Book R, pg. 289:
Shem Carney from Henry Little lot 237/13/2 on 12/2/1859 for $35.25
Book R, pg. 506:
E.T. Carney to Shem Carney lot 229/4/2, 30 acres on 10/2/1862 for $310.
Book S, pg. 123:
Shem Carney to Allen Sizemore lot 224/13/2 on 10/12/1865 for $600.
The author also included a note "See Book R, pg. 451, 493, 507 for Shem Carney."
So, the land records place Shem still in Cherokee Co. as late as 1865, though we have not
found a record for him after that.
Edmond (Edward) had several land holdings. He must have returned from California rich.
He gradually dispersed the land. I have copies of all those deeds here somewhere but
didn't enter them in the computer as ahe was a collateral line for us. They are on
microfilm and available from the LDS.
I think if you do enough research you'll discover that Edmond and Edward were indeed
the same person.
Some of Edmond's land dealings:

John O. Grisham D.S. Certified Nov. 8, 1844
We should remark that his father-in-law's land was on the Waters of Village Creek
also.
Edmond and Elizabeth are said to have lived at Mountain Rest, Oconee Co., South Carolina,
before moving to Lumpkin Co., Georgia, where his household appears on the 1850 census.
On Oct. 11, 1885, he received a lot in Cherokee Co., Georgia, from Cader B. Stancil, for
$120, with William Carney as a witness to the deed. On Dec. 19, 1854 he received a lot in
Cherokee Co., from Richard S. Brown, for $320, with Shem Carney as a witness. In 1868
Edmund gave land to two sons S.G. (probably Silas), and A. P.
In 1860 and 1870 censuses he appeared nearby in the Shake Rag Dist., Cherokee Co.
We also note a marriage record in Cherokee Co. of an Edmond T. Carney and Sarah McMahan on
Dec. 18, 1887,. There was a note in a Cherokee Co. court record book with Edmond's
widow "Sarah" filing for a year's support. However we have seen no other
record to verify that he maybe had a late, third, marriage.
