Of course, here is some information that you probably already have; some of this info can
be found at the Georgia Archives in a book called The Lott Carney Family by Charles O.
Walker (1970). Edmond was the brother of my ancestor Lemuel J. Carney and married the
sister of Lemuel's wife Jane Catherine (Katie) King Carney.
Edmond T. Carney (b. January 1816 in Greenville District SC, d. 1905 in Cherokee Co GA and
buried in Old Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherokee Co GA) m. Elizabeth King (b.
1816 in the Pendleton District SC, d. 06-05-1891 in Cherokee Co GA and also buried in Old
Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery). Elizabeth and Jane Catherine were daughters of Stephen
R. King and Clara Billinger King who are both buried at Double Springs Methodist Church
Cemetery in Mountain Rest, Oconee Co SC). A land transaction in Pickens District (now
Oconee Co) SC on 10-21-1844 granted 80 acres on the Waters of Village Creek to
"Edmund Cainey" who is probably Edmond--Brothers Shem, Lott, and William, as
well as sister Susie Carney King (Mrs. John Terrell King) all lived in the same Oconee Co
SC area. Edmond was a wealthy farmer living in the gold mining region of Lumpkin Co GA in
1850 census. He bought land on 12-19-1854 in Cherokee Co GA for $320 from Richard S.
Brown with older brother Shem Car!
ney as witness; on 10-11-1858 he received a lot in Cherokee Co GA from Cader B. Stancil
for $120 with older brother William Carney as witness. On 10-02-1862, he bought 30 acres
of lot 229/4/2 for $310 from brother Shem Carney. After Elizabeth's death in 1891,
Edmond m. Sariah Harriett Nations (b. June 1838 in Lumpkin Co GA). For listings of
Edmond, Elizabeth, and the 4 children see census of 1850 Lumpkin Co GA, 1860 Cherokee Co
GA, 1870 Cherokee Co GA, 1880 Cherokee Co GA, 1900 Cherokee Co GA. He is probably one of
the sons in his father Lott Carney's household in 1820 Greenville District SC and 1830
Greenville District SC. He was said to have "struck it rich in California" but
more likely he struck it rich in the Georgia Gold Rush, which would explain his absence in
the 1840 Pickens District SC census; he was living in Lumpkin Co GA in 1850 and was
already wealthy. His children were 1) Spartan G. Carney (b. 08-04-1844, d. 03-03-1895 and
buried at Bethany Baptist Church !
in Pickens Co GA) who m. 08-06-1868 in Pickens Co GA to Artie Missa Ev
ans; 2) Aaron Paul (Lewis) Carney (b. July 1845, d. 06-19-1927 and buried at Old Damascus
BC) who m. 03-14-1869 in Cherokee Co GA to Nancy J. Owens; 3) Cassie Malinda Carney Atkins
(b. 1850, d. 05-11-1904) who m. 12-20-1868 to Webster R. Atkins; and 4) Silas K. Carney, a
stonemason and farmer (b. 1852 in Cherokee Co GA, d. 06-25-1925 and buried in Old Damascus
BC) who m. 12-30-1874 in Cherokee Co GA to California Dowda (b. 1849, d. 08-12-1910 and
buried at Old Damascus BC). Information on Silas from Cherokee Co Marriage Book E (p 228),
and census of 1860 Cherokee Co GA, 1870 Cherokee Co GA, 1880 Cherokee Co GA, 1910
Morehouse Co LA, and 1920 Cherokee Co GA. He is not listed in 1900 Cherokee Co GA
household of his wife (Callie Carney) but by 1910 the family was reunited and rented a
farm in Louisiana where they reported that 8 of 10 children were still alive. By 1920
Silas was a widower who owned a farm and headed the household of his married son Sylvia D.
Carney in Cheroke!
e Co GA. In addition to several Carney cousins, brother Lewis, and sister Cassie's
sons, Silas K. Carney submitted Guion Miller Roll application #11363--Eastern Cherokee
Applications of the U.S. Court of Claims, 1906-1909. It costs $25 to get a copy from the
National Archives so I don't know if he was declined or accepted as having a claim on
Cherokee compensation; but it should have helpful info. You need to go to
www.archives.gov and order NATF Form 83 to be mailed to you, then you fill it out with his
name and claim #, and mail it back to the National Archives. Based on census information,
Silas had at least 6 sons and 2 daughters: Raymond Carney (b. 1875) who m. Octavia Clark,
son Silvy D. Carney (b. 1877) who m. Florence Bruce, Brigham Carney (b. 1879), Roscoe D.
Carney (b. 1883), Carter Greeley Carney (b. 1888) who m. Alma Mayfield, Daisy Delano
Carney (b. 1892), Teddie Monroe Carney (b. 1894), and Cora L. Carney (b. 1895).
That's all that I know but I know of oth!
er Carney researchers who would have much more--just yahoo "Silas Carn
ey Georgia".
