I spoke to a "real" genealogist last fall who told me that unless our Cherokee
ancestors lived on a reservation in the late 1800 they will not be on any of the Cherokee
rolls (my ggrandmother isn't listed on any). As far as I can determine, my Carney
line did not...were land owners and lived as white. All census reports that have
"race" indicated show my ggrandmother, Susanna Priscilla (Susan) Carney Dill,
stated she was white.
I do, however, have a photocopy of a photo of her in her later years and she looked very,
very Cherokee...dark skin, broad high cheekbones & straight jet black hair even at an
advanced age.
I believe she was part Cherokee, but doubt I'll ever be able to prove it...unless DNA
becomes available.
