My grandmother was Mary Ann (Mc) Carney, b. 31 Oct 1882/4 in what I believe was County
Tyrone, IRE. She immigrated the US in 1898, supposedly through the Port of Philadelphia
with a sister (Teresa/Kathleen or both). Her father's name was Thomas McCarney and
her mother's was Bridget Colgan. Story has it that Thomas died as a result of a head
injury. She spent time as a domestic to a doctor (Main Line) and also as a seamtress in a
men's shirt factory (she was very good at intricate sewing by hand). Her sister, name
unknown, we think married into a well-to-do family locally. Of the few documents that
I've come across, the 'Mc' is entered straightforward, on others it's
added as an afterthought and on others, it's intentionally absent.
She married a William H. Miller and had five children: William H., Thomas James, Ellen,
Francis and Vincent Anthony. Francis died at an early age. All born and raised in
Philadelphia.
Also think that maybe a brother/uncle already in the Philadelphia area to meet them when
they arrived from Ireland and to get them situated.
