A biography/family history of John Carney is included in "Montana, Its Story and
Biography", Vol 2., pages 374 & 375.
John was born 3 Apr 1859, to Daniel and Johanna (Brean) Carney, b. 1814, County Tipperary,
IR, and 1829, County Kerry, IR, respectively. Daniel came to Canterbury, CT, in 1848,
lived the rest of his life as a farmer, and died there Oct 1888. Johanna died in
Canterbury in June 1867. Five children: John; Mary (Mrs. John Savage) died at age 49 in
Norwich, CT; Timothy died age 20 at Elizabeth, CO; Daniel of Earlville, IL; Elizabeth died
age 18.
John attended schools in Canterbury and left his father's farm at age 17 to learn the
butcher's trade at Jewett City, CT. In 1876, he moved to work on a farm in Mendota,
IL, and in 1881 came to Glendive, MT, to work on construction of the roundhouse and
railyards of the Northern Pacific Railway. He was made a locomotive engineer until 1888
when he was run over by a railcar and lost his right foot. He worked in the railway shops
until 1895 when he was transferred to Huntley, MT. He also owned a 40 acre irrigated farm
east of Huntley.
On 7 Mar 1917, Norwich, CT, John married Miss Mary E. Archer, daughter of John & Mary
(Collier) Archer.
