Hi Teresa
I am researching Cairney (also spellt Cairnie and Carney). I have Hugh
Carney born about 1780s in Ireland but I don't know what area of Ireland.
He married Esther Milligan from Wigtonshire and I am presuming that he came
over to Scotland to work and then got married. According to records I have
checked the surname has changed to Cairnie and then Cairney. I would like
to find out more about the Irish Carneys but don't know how to go about
researching it. I am interested in your Carney connection. Where are the
Great Blasket Islands?
thanks
Joan

Maureen,
I don't know how common the name Carney is, but I do know that Carney is
the
spelling. There was no "K" in Gaelic. The name is derived from
Cearnaigh.
I'm looking for Carneys from Dingle in County Kerry. There were also
many
Carneys on the Great Blasket Islands. I was told that they started
spelling
their names differently to make it easier for people (or mail) to find
them.
