Hi Jon,
I wanted to let you see what the 1st page of my book says and see if you can fill in any
blanks, if you don't mind.
LOTT CARNEY
LOTT CARNEY ( B. 1785 IN Virginia D. by 1870 most likely and buried in an unmarked grave
at Old Damascus Baptist Church in Cherokee County, GA.)
The 1860 Cherokee County census lists him in the home of Edward (Edmond S.) Carney as
a farm laborer. The family tradition is that the Carneys came from Ireland. Lott Carney
gave that he was born in the State of Virginia. Old records reveal that the Carneys were
early settlers in Virginia. Lott Carney moved to South Carolina where his sons were born,
and then to Cherokee County Georgia. From the census records, his sons William and Edmond
moved to Cherokee County between 1841 and 1844. Shem may also have come at this time, but
the children are all listed as being born in South Carolina in the 1850 and 1860 census.
The same is true with the children of Lemuel J. Carney.
Since there is not a will for Lott Carney in the Cherokee County records, his
daughters and their families are uncertain. However, from the census records his sons
were:
I. WILLIAM CARNEY (b. 1814 S.C.)
II. EDMOND T. (S.) CARNEY (b. 1816 S.C. d. 1905)
III. SHEM CARNEY (b. 1817 S.C.)
IV. LEMUEL J. CARNEY (b. 1821 S.C.)
Needless to say, there may have been others who remained in South Carolina or migrate
elsewhere.
Records should be searched in South Carolina and Virginia from more details on Lott
Carney and his family before they moved to Georgia.
The following is information about the descendants of Lott Carney (b. 1785
Virginia).
(Jim Carney says there were five sons, but he does not remember the name of the fifth).
