My husband's ancestors Patrick Kearney and his wife Johanna (Fitzgerald) emigrated
from Doon, County Cork, Ireland to Canada in 1847 with their 10 children. While waiting
just outside of Canada for quarantine clearance, Patrick died of ship fever. Johanna and
her children came to the US and took a covered wagon to the midwest. She stayed there for
three years and then came back east with four of her sons (that we know of) and settled in
Salem Mass. Apparently the rest of her children were grown enough to settle in the
midwest. I have all the information on the eastern Carney's, but know nothing of our
mid-western relatives. Does any of this sound familiar to you? The names of the children
who emigrated in 1847 were: Patrick, William, Peter, Maurice, Richard, Mary Ellen, Thomas
and three more who's names are unknown. William, Patrick, Richard & Peter
returned to Salem, MA with their mother.
