At the Anglo Irish Treaty of 1921, after the Irish War of Independence, Ireland was
partitioned and Northern Ireland (six counties) remained as part of the United Kingdom
(Great Britain) while the remainder ( the 26 counties) became known as the Irish Free
State.
The Carneys in Ireland came principally from Roscommon & Mayo in the West of Ireland
and it is there that they still are predominately found .My branch of the family came from
