Message Board Post:
Dear Ray,
I do not know if your John W. Carney was descended from my ancestor Lott Carney (b. 1775
in VA, d. 1869 in Cherokee Co GA) but he could have been descended from Lott's father
Absalom Carney (b. 1745 in VA, d. 1832 in Greenville District SC) or Absalom's brother
Oynesby Carney (b. before 1755). Both men are listed in the 1800 Greenville District SC
census. There were 9 Carney households in Greenville District SC by 1820 and 6 Carney
households there in 1830. Starting after 1820 and before 1840, most of the younger Carney
men began moving their families out of Greenville District SC to land opportunities
elsewhere--my direct line went first to Oconee Co SC (known as Pickens District SC) and
then to Cherokee Co GA by 1860.
In 1860 Floyd Co GA census(Rome District, p 193, dwelling #420), there is the household of
J.M. Carney (which could also be read as J.W. Carney). Based on the census record, he was
b. around 1826 in SC, was a drayman with $300 in real estate and $300 in personal value.
1. J.M. Carney, 34, SC
2. Louisa M. Carney, 25, GA
3. Mary E. Carney, 11, GA
4. Missouri C. Carney, 6, GA
5. Robert Carney, 4, GA
6. Jas Carney, 2 GA
In 1860 Union Co GA census (Blairsville PO, p 435, Dwelling #50, family #48) there is
another SC Carney family that I cannot place but the ages of the household head (b. around
1822) and his children are similar to those of J.M. Carney above vaguely suggesting a
relationship because they are in the same age generation:
1. Richard Carney, 38, SC, farmer, $400 real estate, $300 personal estate
2. Catherine Carney, 35, NC
3. George W. Carney, 8, GA
4. Corn Carney, 2, GA
Records on Absalom Carney (1745-1832) can be found in SC Land Records 1790-1834 (go to
rootsweb for Greenville Co SC land deeds) and in census records from 1790 Old 96th
District, 1800 Greenville District SC, 1810 Greenville District SC, 1820 Greenville
District SC, and 1830 Greenville District SC.
According to other researchers at
ancesty.com, Absalom Carney (1745-1832) and his wife
Sarah had at least 6 sons and probably many more because he was already middle-aged when
these were born. Any of these could be your ancestor.
1.Lott Carney (1775-1869)who m. Susanna and moved from Greenville District SC to Mountain
Rest in Oconee Co (Pickens District) SC to the Shake Rag District of Cherokee Co GA--some
of his older currently unidentified sons could have been the father of your ancestor.
2.Joshua Carney who had several children--there is a Joshua Carney (b. before 1775) who
headed a household of 5 sons in the 1820 Greenville District SC census (p 75).
3.John Carney who had several children and was himself probably b. between 1774-1784 and
d. 10-28-1837 in Greenville Co SC--there are two John Carneys in the 1820 Greenville
District SC. The older John Carney (p 113) was b. between 1775-1794 and headed a
household with 1 young boy in 1820.
4.Thomas Carney who is reported to have moved to the Louisiana border of Mississippi
5. Absolum Carney Jr. who had a family. There are 2 Absolom Carneys (b. between
1794-1804) who headed households in 1820 Greenville District SC, each with one young
son--in addition to 3 households for Absolom Carneys who are middle-aged (b. before 1775);
each of these households also includes a young man aged 16-26
6. Eli Carney (d. 1809 in Greenville Co SC) who m. Nancy and had sons Absalom Richard
Carney (b. 1807) and Calvin Carney (b. 1805)--these sons headed households in 1830
Greenville District SC and were the only 2 Carney households remaining in 1840 Greenville
District SC.
Almost any of the 9 household heads in 1820 Greenville District or their unidentified
older sons who were still living in their father's household in 1820 could have
fathered your ancestor John W. Carney (b. 1827). Carney households are listed on pages
75, 85, 88, 105, 112, and 113 in the 1820 Greenville District SC census.
In 1830 Greenville District SC, the following Carney households had boys that are within
range of your known ancestor (John W. Carney, b. 1827):
(p 285): John Carny, age 30-40 (b. between 1790-1800) - 1 boy (b. between 1820-1825) and 2
boys (b. between 1815-1820)
(p 286): Capt Absalom Carney, age 30-40 (b. between 1790-1800) - 1 boy (b. between
1825-1830), 1 boy (b. between 1820-1825), and 1 boy (b. between 1815-1820)
(p 286): Calvin Carny - 2 boys (b. between 1825-1830)
(p 344): Lot Carny - son Lemuel J. Carney (b. 1822)--both are my direct ancestors. The 2
boys (b. between 1815-1820) are Shem Carney (b. 1817) and Edmond T. Carney (b. 1816). The
boy (b. between 1810-1815) is William Carney (b. 1814). All 4 sons settled as adults in
Cherokee Co GA. I do not know who the young man (b. between 1800-1810) was but he was also
in the household in 1810 and 1820 and could potentially have been an ancestor of yours.
So as you can see, without additional information from others identifying who the above
are, you could have been descended from any of these men. I hope this at least provides
some directions to head off on. Good luck!
