I am researching the family of my gggg-grandfather Lott Carney (b. 1775 in VA, d. 1869 and
buried at Old Damascus Baptist Church in Cherokee Co GA) next to wife Susanna Carney (b.
1785 in NC, d. 1855). His father was Absolom Carney (b. 1745 in VA, d. 1832 in SC)and
mother was Sarah Carney; they bought land on 05-10-1790 on the Enoree River in Greenville
District SC. Census info on Lott Carney is 1800 Greenville Dist SC, 1810 Greenville Dist
SC, 1830 Greenville Dist SC, 1840 Pickens Dist SC, 1850 Pickens Dist SC, and 1860 Cherokee
Co GA. Descendants of his sons Edmond and Lemuel J. (my ggg-grandfather) filed for
compensation as Cherokee Indians on the Guion Miller Roll. At least 3 children (Edmond,
Lemuel J., and Susanna) married children of Stephen R. King; therefore, no one knows if
the Cherokee connection was Carney or King. I wonder if Priscilla (Shem's wife) was
also a King of Pickens Dist (now Oconee Co) SC? Shem and brothers William, and Lemuel
each headed a new h!
ousehold in 1840 Pickens Dist SC near their father Lott Carney and the Stephen R. King
family. Shem and brother William moved their families to the Shake Rag (now Sharp Top)
District of Cherokee Co GA by 1846; they lived next door to each other in 1850 Cherokee Co
GA. Shem recorded a deed dated 09-07-1853 for land lot 229 (Section 2, District 13) in
Cherokee Co GA where Upper Bethany Rd intersects Damascus Rd. In 1860 Shem headed a
Cherokee Co GA household with 8 children; his 3 brothers William Carney, Edmond Carney,
and Lemuel Carney, father Lott (living with Edmond), and sister Susanna (Susie) Carney
King (wife of James Terrell King) all lived in the same vicinity of 1860 Shake Rag,
Cherokee Co GA. When did Shem Carney leave GA? Where did he go? When and where did he
die?
