Well here I go from one fairly common name to a really common one. Just
found out that the middle of the three wives I know of my great grand
father Chesterfield Monroe CARNEY was Ida JONES.
Here is what little I know.
Chesterfield Monroe CARNEY was the s/o Harry (Henry) D. and Sarah
(Sally) MURPHY CARNEY. He was b. March 1849 in Port Royal, Montgomery
Co., TN and died Dec 29, 1928 in Ft. Smith, Sebastian Co., AR
I know of three marriages for him, but the first is when he is 42, so
there is a good chance there are more cousins out there. I have him up
through the 1870 census (thanks to a wonderful lady who found the 1870
for me with him listed as Ches Carry) and then he disappears for 22
years until he marries Columbia Porter BRANHAM in 1892 in Crawford Co.,
AR. Had one child, my grandmother Galeenah CARNEY. They separate, I've
found no divorce record yet, and both go on to marry again.
His second wife is Ida JONES b. Feb 1880 in AR d.? They wed on Nov 1,
1898 in Sebastian Co.,AR. I know nothing more about this marriage, I
just knew it existed due to the 1900 census and just found her surname
last night. Did they have children? Did she die or did they separate?
Because between 1902 and 1905 he married Emma Adeline Eurella TURNER who
had previously been married to ? DONLEY. and had four children with her.
She had one son Alonzo DONLEY by her previous marriage.
Chesterfield has been a rascally rabbit to hunt down. I have no idea
where he was from 1870 to 1892. He apparently had a speech problem or
just didn't make himself clear to census takers or other official types.
I have found him as Cluster F. Corny, CM Corny, Ches Carry, CM Carny
and several other misspellings in various land and census records.
If you know anything about this fellow and his three wives I would
greatly appreciate it.
