Ellen Elizabeth (Carney) Spires
LANCASTER: Ellen Elizabeth (Carney) Spires, age 77, passed away peacefully at her home in
Lancaster, Ohio (Fairfield County) on Saturday, April 13, 2013.
She married James J. Spires, Sr., on October 29, 1955, who survives.
Ellen was born in New Lexington, Ohio, on April 28, 1935, to Clarence "Vince"
and Stella (Griffith) "Tag" Carney, who preceded her in death.
She had two older brothers who also preceded her in death - Thomas V. and Michael F.
Carney.
Ellen was a 1953 graduate of St. Aloysius Academy in New Lexington, OH. She cherished her
Perry County, Ohio roots, especially her Carney relatives that included at least 60 first
cousins.
Ellen enjoyed attending annual Carney Family Reunions, as well as seeing former classmates
and friends during high school reunions in New Lexington.
She was a charter member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Lancaster, Ohio
During her life, Ellen enjoyed watching her family grow up on the family farm.
Ellen also relished a good, competitive game of Euchre. She frequently won at the card
table against close friends and family.
Survivors include her five children: Joyce A. (David) Strait; James J. (Patricia) Spires
Jr.; Eileen M. Competti; Patricia R. (David) McDaniel; and David M. (Anita) Spires.
Other survivors include her 10 grandchildren: Andrea, Annamarie and Leslie Spires; Erin
(Patrick) Arter, Dominic, and Ryan Competti; Evan and Alex McDaniel; and Victoria and Adam
Spires.
Ellen is also survived by one great-grandson William Arter, two sisters-in-law (Lori and
Ernestine Carney) and five nieces and one nephew.
Calling hours for family and friends will be held at SHERIDAN FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday,
April 16 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 18 at St. Mark
Catholic Church in Lancaster.
Burial services will immediately follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.
