Taken from my father's memoirs:
John Carney, or Grandad Carney, was 20 years older than Mary Parsons Carney, and while he
was Irish, he was from Liverpool, England. She was from Mayo County, Ireland. John
"jumped ship" with his sea chest about 5 miles off the coast at Charleston
(there was some kind of blockade, probably to prevent an influx of unwanted Irish
immigrants at the time) and swam ashore. He had seven brothers who came over at about the
same time, although hopefully not in the same manner. From what I have been able to
gather, he was a crusty old boy who ruled the household with a rather firm hand, but was
not without a sense of humor, however shocking it might be to the delicate sensibilities
and ears of Mary, his wife, and his two daughters. The older daughter was named Margaret
("Missy"), and the younger was your grandmother, Anne Agnes. Old John had a
raft of boys, the first two apparently dying practically at birth. These first two were
both given the name of John, presumably in the !
hope that old John's name would live on, but this was not to be. Mary Anne Parsons
Carney then gave birth to William (Uncle Bill), Joseph Edward (Ned), Margaret (Missy),
Anne Agnes (your grandmother), and finally Jordan Patrick (Jerdy). Uncle Bill married two
widows, but never had any children. Joseph never married (he died while still young), nor
did Ned, but Aunt Miss married John Rafferty and had three boys: Jimmie (who died of
appendicitis), John (who finally died of lifelong alcoholism and dissipation), and
Francis, who must have died at an early age, like Jimmie, since I knew only John.
