Hi, Have just readread your post re Patrick Carney Co. Mayo.
I am not related but am researching Carneys in Roscommon.
Carney was a very common name in Co Mayo with Griffiths Valuation listing almost 300- most
of whom were tenant farmers.
There were 32 of those the bearers of the name Thomas.
There were34 Gilmore landowners listed.
Castlebar itself is a reasonably large town and so would not have tenant farmers living
there - though they may live close by in various other townlands.
I have searched for the townland you suggest i.e Drumhogge, and can find nothing that even
resembles it.
Compulsory registration only started in Ireland in 1864 so your Patrick would not be
recorded except in the Parish Baptismal register. To search that you need to know the
parish he was born in and his religion - though I presume he was RC.
You will need to do some more research in the US.
His marriage record may reveal both his parents and place of birth.
Post emmigration history is of little use except seen by a descendant who is aware of his
history. This is a long shot.
You should therefore go back to the drawing board and dig deeper there - like I said
obtain his marriage record and then maybe look for death notices, Nationalisation papers,
passport application etc.
Armed with more information you have a greter chance of sucess.
Regards
