For those interested, just north of Sligo City and slightly west of the main road to
Donegal is the village of CARNEY. I stopped there in August of this year, but was not
able to find anyone who knew anything about the history of the village or why it was named
Carney. If you are in that area, Laura's pub doesn't open until 5pm apparently,
and I don't know when the Chinese Take-out place is open. Both were closed when I was
there in mid afternoon. The other village named CARNEY that I am aware of is in County
Limerick just north of Nenagh near Lough Derg. Just south of the Village is the ruins of
CARNEY Castle, but even though I had good directions and a couple of pictures, I was
unable to find it. It is on private property and is not open to the public, but I am told
that the owner will usually let you visit. No one in the village seemed to know anything
about the castle. Otherwise my visit to Ireland was great fun.
