Hi John-
You never know about those shots in the dark. Every now & then they shed a
little light. My g-g-grandfather was James Carney. In his Civil War pension
records is a record of him sending to "the bishop of Elphin Co. Roscommon" to try
to get proof od his birth date for a boost in his pension. Fr. MacDonald of
Elphin didn't find anything to help him. It di\oes seem likely he was from that
parish. It encompassed a fair part of Co. Roscommon.
He had two brpthers who came here but there is no record of either having
children and we don't know their names. One was in New Bedford MA and one in
Cleveland. The one in New Bedford lived until after the Civil War but the other
did not.
My brother and a cousin and I went to Roscommon this year to try to find
more. We have some leads about where to find church baptismal records. I'll
happily share that info if you're interested.
Let me know. I'm

Hi John-
I'm glad to hear from you. I don't see any "cross-overs" from what we've
found but they were all there in the same period. I'm going to forward your
information along to my cousin Charlie Carroll, who grew up in Windsor Locks, right
across the bridge from Thompsonville ("T-ville" to the natives) who may have
come up with useful info in his studies of the local records. The church in
Windsor Locks (St. Mary's?) was kind of hopeless when it came to cemetary
records, There were some records that were useful in Enfield town hall but it's not
a particularly user-friendly place.
I don't remember any Thomas in the family tree. James, Daniel, Michael (my
g-grandfather), Margaret and Elizabeth were the surviving children, as I recall
(without reference to notes).
I'll also send your info along to Jack Carney, whose family was in the area
at about the same time and whose ancestors don't seem to intersect with mine.
Let's hope they do with yours.
All the best. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Bob Carney
Roscommon is a county here in Ireland. There are also villages of the same name. Usually when someone says they are from Roscommon, they mean the county. If you have any idea where in Roscommon, I might be able to help.

Hello Mr. Hogan-
My name is Bob Carney from Springfield MA. We may have a family connection in
Thompsonville. My g-g-grandfather, James Carney, was married there to
Elizabeth O'Leary in 1859. He gives his birthplace in his Civil War pension records
as "the Parish of Elphin, Co. Roscommon."
Please get in touch & let's see if there is a connection. I am not aware of
any other Carney-surnamed relations in Thomsonville at the time. He had a
sister, Bridget Harris, who lived there. He also had two sisters living in
Springfield MA.
I worked with a Jack Carney who also had relations in Thomsonville in the
late 19th century but we never did find a connection. He may be a relation of
yours if we're not. Give a call.
