I’m sorry to disappoint you but I do not think there is any connection between Bunratty Castle and the name Carney. There is a river some miles from Bunratty named Garney perhaps that is what you read. However to give you food for thought there is a small village named "Lios Cearnaigh" ( Fort of the Carneys when translated ) but anglicised to Liscarney less than 10 miles south of Westport in Co. Mayo. A lios or fort ( sometimes referred to as ring fort or fairy fort ) is a circular area surrounded by a high earthwork wall with a very narrow entrance and rocks and logs nearby ready to block same.In times of danger the children and cattle rushed to the fort while the adults protected them from the wall. They usually had a supply of stones and clubs ready for use piled there . These forts were built by the dominant family ( extended ) in the region..Even though many Carneys emigrated to the U.S.A. the name is still quite common there .There are about 6000 notices on !

Looking for the descendants of William Carney, B ABT. 1871, Allegheny County, PA. His parents were William & Mary Ward Carney, all I know is that he left Allegheny County, PA & went West, sometime between 1880 & 1909. He had 2 sisters, Anna Carney Blackley & Margaret, who died before 1880 in Allegheny County. He also had 2 brothers George & Harry, who died in 1885 in Allegheny County. Anna remained in Allegheny County however, sometime around 1909, George went to Xenia, IL where he died in 1909.
