Hi Julie! My maiden name is Slusar. My grandfather came to the US through Ellis Island when he was 12 yrs. old. He originally settled around Wilkes Barre/Scranton to work the coal mines, then went to Hubbard, OH, and back into the Pittsburgh area. He died in 1970, so he immigrated here from the Austro Hungarian Empire in 1907. His name was Ewan, Americanized it became John. He was ethnic Ukrainian and practiced Ukrainian customs and the religion, but lived in what is now the southern part of Poland. The reason your name became Smith is because the word slusar translates to the generic occupation of being a "smith" by trade.
I am now researching my family names of Slusar but more so my mother's father = Skerczak/Skirczak/Skirchak. My mother's mother also came from the same area Kot/Cot.

Gary or Bill,
Have either of you ran across the name THOMAS CARNEY anywhere along the way.??
I finally got ahold of my g-grandpa John W. Carney's death cert. (the one buried in the Brightwater Cemetery) next to Pinky Jenkins Carney, and although it gave me his birthyear as 1860 my grandfather Walter Carney who was the reporting party on the cert said he did not know the names of his dads parents. John W. died in Desoto, Miss and was taken to Brightwater. It said he had lived there about 30 years. I've been told by a cousin that she has our family bible that says John W. Carney's father was THOMAS, no other info. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Debbie

Gary,
Hey Cuz! You and I both go back to Simeon Carney. His son Sam was my GGrandfather. They were all from Tilton. You should ride over and check out the cemetary at the old Methodist church. Go East on Divide Rd off Hwy 27 about 1/2 mile or so, turn right at the small sign and cemetary is about 1/4 mile.
Also...I think I've narrowed down John's entry into Miss to
1815-16. According to my research, he came down here to "cut
wood". Funny, a bunch of our kin are still doing the same.
Later,
Bill

Saw a posting regarding William Carney. This date is too early, but on a long shot - did this William have a son, William? My William lived in Onslow Co., NC and his son, Tobias was my g-g-grandfather. Since Va is just above NC, hoped there was a migration. Hope this can connect.
Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Thanks Joe, what I'm really looking for is concrete proof of individuals residing at Batsto. The census only tells us the township, what I'm attempting to do is separate those families that lived in, say, Greenbank or Crowleytown, from those at Batsto. I find a great deal of people claiming their ancestor came from Batsto, but almost no documentation. If you ever turn up a birth/death certificate or something like that for an individual from Batsto, I'd really appreciate it.
If the Carney family is from the area at all though, I'd be glad to add another page to the site for that family if you want to send me some more info on them.

Dear Brian:
I corresponded with you about one year ago about the town of Emmelville, Atlantic County, New Jersey. In fact, you posted my information on your website about my wife's ancestors from EMMELVILLE.
Adelaide Carney is the second great grandmother of my wife. I got Adelaide Carney's birth and death dates from my wife's grandmother's private genealogy records (she has Adelaide's birth place as Batsto, NJ). As far as the birth and death years, these are true since I physically found her tomb at the Elwood Cemetery.
Adelaide's father and mother are buried at Elwood Cemetery and I found Federal Census information proving that his household resided in Washington Township, NJ.
I will be happy to send information on the Carney family with listings of documentations as well.
Sincerely,
Joe Schiavo

Hi, my name is Julie (Smith) Wescott. My father's parents came to US through Ellis Island from Poland. His dad's last name was Slusarczyk, but had it changed to Smith, of all names! My grandmother's maiden name was Marosz. We lived in CT, but had relatives in NY & NJ. My grandfathers name was Frank & grandmother was Anna. My father has done a search as to how many Slusarczyk families had come into the US. He said it was 77 families. Some have changed their last names & some have shortened them to Slusar. I have not met any relatives other than the one's I grew up with in CT. I just wanted to share that with someone that had the same interest as myself. Thanks.

Hello Robert,
I had gone to a lot of those Grondin reunions and I remember your grandfather. He use to love to play cards. My dad was Gerald Carney. He died in January 10, 1995. I just started doing this when my husband gave me the software for Christmas. How long have you been looking into the family history? I would love to see the transcripe of Grandma's.
I have two sisters and one brother living. I am the oldest girl, then there is Martha Jean , Paul and Mary Ann. Our oldest brother died six months after our father. Who was your father and mother?
My husband and I just got back from a trip to OH. My youngest son, just graduated from Baldwin Wallace and we went up for the graduation. Hope to hear from you soon.

Do you have a birth certificate or other official documentation that the Carney family resided in Batsto? I am extremely interested in documentary evidence of some kind for individuals that lived in Batsto. While I am not researching your family name specifically, I do have a great deal of interest in the Batsto region.
You can also try searching my web site at

Tim, I'm not sure my message was sent to you. If you ever come across the names Ellen Carney or Devlin Carney in your searches through Irish sources, I'd be glad to know about it. 1850-ish. Mary G Swift.

Dear Tim: My great grandmother was Ellen Carney, married to Tom Moran of County Mayo (close to Sligo). If you learn anything about these Carneys from that area, I'm interested. All I know at this point is her name. We're talking
about the 1850's - 1860's etc. MGS

Hello Eileen,
Mabel is my great Aunt. I may have met her once at a family reunion. Her brother oscar was my gradnfather and he moved to Michigan in the early 1900's.
I am currently exchaning info with several other cousins, and one of the things I have is a transription made in 1970 of Mabel reminiscing about her parents and grandparents.
I would love to exchange info with you. I'm not sure how far along you are but Mabel had 14 brothers and sisters who lived to adulthood.
