Adela, have you researched in Ireland? Evidentially it is not like the
states. If you have not why don't you subscribe to
GENIRE-L-request(a)rootsweb.com. This can be a contensious group but they
know researching in Ireland. Just be sure to tell them you want
pointers researching County Mayo.
Betty in Idaho
Could you check into a Thomas Carney that was married to Lovina Morton for
me? I don't know where either of them are from, so they may be from Ireland
directly.
Thank you,
Barbara
I am headed to Ireland in April and will be doing some research in Co. Mayo.
If anybody has any CARNEY's there and would like me to check them out too,
please send me the information. Hopefully I can get to them while doing mine.
Adela Carney
Dear Mary

Butler to a wealthy family in Ennis and my father went to Catholic School
through High School in Ennis.I'll save your email and if I ever come across
anythink that is remotely related I'll send it on to you,

Hi, Michael,I don't know much about the Kearneys in Ireland, but at least
what I do know goes back farther than yours. I guess people spelled names the
way they sounded in those days. I've often found official records as Carney
on my Kearney family, so I try to always look for both spellings.
My grandmother Mary Kearney was born in Doonbeg, Co. Clare, in 1857 and her
brother Michael was born there in 1859. I think Doonbeg is about l0 - 15
miles from Ennis? When my grandmother was 3 years old, the family came to
Upper Michigan where they had 8 more children, the other boys being Patrick,
John, James and William. They were Catholic.
About 5 years ago I had research done by the Clare Heritage Centre. They not
only found Mary & Michael's baptismal records, but they found their mother,
Margaret Neylon (Kearney) who was born in Doonbeg in 1837. Unfortunately
their father Patrick Kearney was harder to find, since I had no birthdate or
parents; names. The only Kearney they could find a record of in Doonbeg was
Bartholomew, who lived next door to Margaret Neylon's parents. They surmised
that Bartholomew and Patrick were probably brothers.
When Patrick died in Michigan in 1882 his age was given as 56. If this was
correct he would have been born in 1826. When Bartholomew died in Doonbeg in
1891 his age was given as 77, making his birth in 1814. He also had a son
Michael. The trouble is, it seems that many people in those days couldn't
read and/or write and didn't really know their birthdate, or how old they
really were.
I understand there are several Neylon families still living in Ennis, as well
as some Kearneys. Maybe that's where my Patrick came from. I'll probably
never find him, but wouldn't it be nice if some of this helps you someday?
Good luck. Mary
So many of you seem to think that all of the Carneys went West !! This is
not so as my wife's family have some connections with the name.
I cant give accurate dates but one ROBERT CARNEY married an ELIZABETH
MILBURN (born about 1849 )in about 1875. I think that they were living then
in County Durham, but later moved to the Spa town of Harrogate, also in
England.
Robert is reported to have had a near relative who was an Admiral in the US
Navy (>>>but this could mean anything -he could have been a stoker on the
Staten Island Ferry <GGG>)
They had 6 children 1.Robert Jnr, 2.Jenny who married David Hislop. 3.Nance
or Nancy who married Ronald Gatenby. 4.Mary Born 1875 Died 1959(Always
known as Polly) who married Bolamon Young and who is my wife's (Elona
Rogers) Grandmother. 5.Ada who was unmarried and Died in
Harrogate,Yorkshire in 1934 and 6 Margaret also unmarried.
If this is of interest to any of you then I'd like to hear from you
privately.
Now a little request.......Can anyone identify the following address, taken
from an old letter circa 1948. It should be the address of a cousin of my
wifes. She would be, if our rather elderly memories are correct, a Mary
Laverack who married a Bud McKinnon. Her father was William Laverack and
mother a Judith/Mary Edgar. 50 years is a long time but if anyone is in the
neighbourhood perhaps they could do a little check for us.
The address was Mrs Bud McKinnopn, Box 48, Revloc. Penna. Cambria Ca. USA.
Cheers

RE: Catharine Carney
My mom and uncle (her grandchilden) were quite young at the time of her
death. They seem to think she or her parents were from Cork County,
Ireland or Boston, MA. (sometimes stories get passed down) She is buried
in St. John's Cemetary in Brooklyn, NY. We don't know of any other known
relatives.
Thanks,
Mary Ann

I have been searching for Thomas Carney' siblings and parents. I believe
he would be a brother to your Stephen as that is the time frame for the
birth of Thomas. Do you have Thomas born 14 Jun 1772, I think in NY.
