Alan,
Your Scottish side of the family story reminds me of our visit to Kearny, New
Jersey several years ago. Kearny was named after General Philip Kearny, a
prominent Union general during the Civil War who was killed in rearguard action at
Chantilly, Virginia in the aftermath of the Second Battle of Manassas.
The city of Kearny is in northern New Jersey, close in to Trenton, and New York
City. The community today has a very visible Irish-American population with stores
with Irish themes and names, etc. We went in one such store, and when I used our
credit card with "Kearney" on it, I waited for the reaction of the manager, who
spoke with an Irish accent. He seemed nonplused. When I quizzed him on the two
different spellings of the name(s), and the possible Irish roots of the town, he
said, "Oh, Kearny without the second 'e' is Scottish, I think." He seemed to take
no pride in the "Scottish" name of his town. We may have been the recipients of
some Irish humor, but I can't be sure.

I am from the Scottish side of the family and I have in my tree Cairnie,
Cairney, Carney, Carnie, Carny and one lonely Kairney. I don't think spelling
was very important before there were telephone books.
By the way, do I belong in this list?
best regards,

Hello Everyone!
Below is some of my Carney information:
William Henry Carney (Nov 26, 1894 - 1967) lived
in TN and died in the Veterans Hospital in Allen Park,
Michigan. He married Vinie Brown (1909 - 1943)
and they had 11 children. After Vinie's death, he
married a Louise and had two more children.
William had at least four sisters, Betsy, Nora, Agnes,
and Kate. His mother's name, I believe, was Mary.
I also have a website which features my non-living
relatives:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Trail/8145/
Good luck to you all! Jen
Time for my weekly plea for everyone to look under rocks and file folders in
the hope of finding more about my great x 3 grandparents:
Alexander Carney b. 1816, possibly Maryland, son of James O. Kerney and
Elizabeth Walden.
James and Elizabeth settled in Yates County, NY. Alexander settled in
Mishawaka, IN by 1853,married to 1) Electa and 2) Amanda Ford Oliver. Two
children: Esther Kearney Salzgaber(?) of Michigan and Frank Kearney of Kansas
to Illinois.
Calling all CARNEY?KEARNEY?KERNEY? folks......... come out, come out wherever
you are

Frank---my great x 3 grandfather was Alexander Carney (or so I discovered
recently, after years and years of looking for Alexander Kearney). HIS father
was James Kerney, and my grandfather was Frank Kearney. Suffice it to say
you are not alone!!!!

I have just started researching my mothers side of the family, and I can't
believe it. My Grandmothers baptismal record from Bekan Parish, Co. Mayo
shows her name as KERNEY, yesterday I went through the 1901 census for Co.
Mayo and it showed their name as KEARNEY.
The Maiden name she used on her record in this country was CARNEY it makes
you wonder what variation is going to pop up next, but then I guess they've
used most of them already.:-)

Well, it's time for me to post my illusive Carney's again, if anyone
knows these people please let me know.
Rita Margaret Carney, born in 1918, place unknown
Parents: James Carney and Agnes Swift Carney
Originated from County Mayo Ireland
Lived in Bronx New York around 1936 with uncle John Bannon.
Let me know if this rings a bell.
thanks,
Connie from FL.
I received the following letter in the mail from someone in Cleveland.
While I am not related to this family, I will post the message here and if
the names ring a bell I will send you the mailing address privately (I'm
reluctant to post her address publically).
"My father came to the U.S. in 1907 from near Castlebar, County Mayo,
Ireland and settled around the Wilkes Barre PA area because he had relatives
there who had preceeded him to the States. He came from a large family of
eleven children, James, Thomas, Patrick, Bridget, Denis, Anne, Mary, John,
Anthony (my father) and the twins Peter and Michael. My father's parents
were Thomas Carney and Julia McDonnell Carney."
I am beginning to believe that most Carney's came from under rocks...Cannot
find much on mine at all.

Family names are great.......where? PLEASE INCLUDE LOCATIONS. If there
is not a location mentioned immediately, I delete and I am not alone.
Don't have time to read a chapter long list of family names to glean a
location.
Thank you.
Betty in Idaho
Please understand that my knowledge of Alexander is strictly from the Wheeler book. It's not that
I'm not delighted to share, but the sourcing and theories are strictly Harriette Marr Wheeler's. I
have written Mrs. Wheeler, but have not gotten a reply, the book is available through FHCenters and
at Ft. Wayne Library I know.
Since my interest is for Samuel and his children for a starting point, I was delighted to find that
my John CARNEY had sibs. Samuel CARNEY/KERNEY and Eleanot Marr had these children according to HMWheeler.
John CARNEY, b. 10 Oct 1787
William CARNEY, b. 12 Dec. 1789
with wife Catherine had 12 children, among them Charles, Eliza, Eleanor, Samuel, Julia Ann,
Fedelia, Electra R., William, Cordelia, Willard and Edna.
Joseph CARNEY, b. 14 Sept 1791
Hannah CARNEY, b. April 1793
David CARNEY, b. Mar 1795 m. Hannah (Bennet) Perry
Harmon, Hannah, David d.
Walter CARNEY b. Aug 1797
Alem CARNEY b. Oct 1804
Samuel CARNEY b. Oct 1804
HMWheeler says the first 4 were b. in Upper Mt. Bethel, PA, the last 4 are not known. I have no
other information about the Alexander than resides in her lengthy footnote, but does place him in
Niagara Co., NY too. Samuel Kerney does appear in the PA 1790 census, but I saw no other Kerneys
there.
You all have given me reason to finally reenter some data into my computer that I had used to store
misc. bits of data I had found various libraries. My backup was not good, and when my beloved
computer decided to do ugly things, I forgot to pull the Programs from within Virtual PC. A hard way
to learn about computers. Lost the info so will now be encouraged to get everything back up-to-date.
A house guest, an archivist and Colonial historian by trade, strongly suggested we look at the Rev.
War Pension information. Has anyone done that in their search for (CARNEY/KERNEY or any variation)
? She says that since there was quite a time lag between war and the legislation approving the
pensions, persons had to give lots and lots of supporting information that is really useful, if your
person is included in the index. I will ask her if there is a location for those who were denied pensions.
Sorry for the repetitions here from an earlier posting, but thought I could bore some and add a bit
for others.
Mary
Does anyone know of a Mary Louise Carney b. 5.6.1887 m. Albert George
Reynolds b. 27.2.1887 Wolverhampton, Eng. They were married in Forbes NSW
in 1908. I don't know where she was born, my cousin told me County Cork but
my aunty said that wasn't true. I don't think I can rely on them for any
information.
Thanks.
Sheryl.
Mary-thanks for your reply re: Alexander Carney....though I'd pick your
brain, since his parents seem to have been born under a rock! ( darn! Now, if
only I knew WHERE that rock was!) K
Ok...so this is (sort of) off the subject for a minute...but if you are into
graves and cemeteries, (and will admit it!), this is a very interesting site.
And if you have any famous ancestors (I wish!), it's even more fun!

Mary--did this Alexander Carney by any chance have a son named Alexander???
Do you have any other names? Like those 6 children you mentioned. I am looking for James Carney who
married Agnes Swift, they had a daughter named Rita Margaret Carney. I swear, you would think this bunch
just walked right off the end of earth, never to be heard from again. Do you ever get the feeling people
think you're crazy for asking about Carney's that don't seem to exist, I do!
Good Luck to you,
Connie

Co., NJ volunteers, a Loyalist regiment. On 14 Aug 1816, Alexander Carney of Cambria, Niagara Co,

I love this! It is so me. I'll have to show my husband, then he'll know that
there are other's out there like me, and other's out there that can sympathize
with him.
That was great;

If we don't have enough trouble keeping up wit their last names, my grandmother
who I have always thought was known as Rita, now I find she could have been
known by her middle name Margaret. Holy Cow, how are we ever supposed to find
these people?
Thanks again,
