Betty,
I am a descendant of Samuel Swazey Carnes. He and son, John (apparently
named for the John back in New Jersey) moved to Hineston, Louisiana about the
time of the Louisiana purchase. William, John's son. moved down to Calcasieau
Parish, then later to Texas when his oldest son was killed near their home by
Jayhawkers during the Civil War. William James Carnes was an elected member
of the Louisiana House of Representatives 1859-1860. His father John, died in
Livingston County, Texas--he had moved there with other children in 1850.
Is Wells connected to Samuel Swazey Carnes? Any of this familiar?
Look forward to getting the pieces together.
