Hello fellow Carnes researchers:
I am new to the list. I do know Betty. She and I think her Wells and my
Richard Carnes were probably brothers from Franklin/Hart Cos, GA. Both of
us are seeking parentage - I am specifically looking for parents of my
ggggrandfather RICHARD CARNES.
Richard Carnes was reported on censuses to have been born in New Jersey in
about 1774. He died in Franklin/Hart Co GA in 1854. (A grandson reported
in a 1907 application for recognition as of Cherokee Indian descent that
Richard was born in NC or Rabun Co GA. He also claimed Richard was of
Indian descent - He seemed very convinced of this information but I have
never been able to substantiate it.) Richard was married to Delpha who was
reported to have been born in VA in about 1779.
It appears Richard and Delpha and their oldest son Holloway (1798-1860)
moved to Franklin Co., GA in 1799 or 1800 and settled on Shoal Creek where
he farmed and lived the remainder of his life. Richard and Delpha's
children were as follows:
Holloway (1798-1860) m. Lyddy ___?
Wells (1804-1858) m. Clarissa Herring (my gggrandparents)
William (1805-__) m. Hannah Wright
Richard (1813-1881) m. Leah Looney
Hugh (1815-1880) probably never married
Lydia (about 1818-____)? appears to have never married but had
a son named George Washington Carnes it appears
Samuel (1819-1898) married M. Mary Looney
Elizabeth "Betsy" (1825- )
Sallie or Sarah (dates ?) m. Green C. Walters
Contemporaries to Richard Carnes in Franklin Co GA in early 1800's were
Holloway and Wells Carnes (both of whom I believe to be Richard's brothers
because Richard named his eldest sons, Holloway and Wells). There was also
a John P. Carnes who married a Lidia M. Cash in 1820 who may have been
related. There was also the attorney and politician for whom Carnesville,
the county seat, is named, Thomas Peters Carnes, but I have found no
connection here, although it is interesting he and Richard and the others
named in this paragraph were all in Franklin Co GA at the same time.
Does anyone connect to this family?? I have lots of information re further
descendents but would enjoy making any connections. Of course, most
interested in finding parentage of Richard.
Thanks,
