Paulette,
Richard Carnes, b. abt 1774 in NJ, is my 3 great grandfather also, through
his son, Samuel, who was a brother to Holloway and Wells and 6 other
siblings of Richard and Delphia. That's nine children that I can account
for. It seems highly probable that our Richard named two of his sons after
two of his brothers, Holloway and Wells.
I agree completely with what you say about Wells Carnes being highly likely
a brother to our Richard Carnes, above.
Also, as you said, Richard Carnes, above is my brick wall, also. I have
seen several scenarios as to our Richard Carnes' parentage, but nothing with
any substance at all. Dr. John C. Carnes, who died last year, has in his
notes that possible parents were Richard Carnes and Ann Groome. But this
couple were married in Middlesex, NJ in 1732, so it is highly unlikely these
are the parents of our Richard Carnes, since he was born abt 1774.

Dear Fellow Carnes Researchers:
Well, I can stand it no longer. I must weight in here.
My ggg grandfather was Richard Carnes, B about 1774 in NJ (per censuses)
and in the Shoal Creek area of Franklin Co by 1799. He was married to
Delphia McGinnis. They had a number of children, many descendants of
whom are still up in that area of Georgia. I feel pretty sure by great
circumstantial evidence that my Richard is a brother to Wells Carnes (of
Betty's line) and a Holloway Carnes, both contemporary to him in
Franklin Co., GA. My Richard named his oldest sons, Holloway and Wells
- Wells was my gg grandfather. There was also a John in Franklin Co at
the same time as Richard, Holloway and Wells. I have always thought
Richard was somehow related to Thomas Petters Carnes (the namesake of
Carnesville, GA) but have no idea how - cousin, uncle/nephew something.
They were in the same area of the county and there were land exchanges
between all these Carnes.
So, when you're looking at the path of NJ to Georgia of Carnes - please
keep my Richard in mind.
I have a huge Carnes file but sadly, Richard is my brick wall and I know
nothing other than what is listed above about his ancestry.
Thank you.

Does anybody know whether they moved to Georgia from New Jersey--and if
so,
from what county or town in New Jersey?

I think I know a little. It doesn't look as if I have any more
than
you
do.
These Carnes descendants were also in Hinds Co., Mississippi before
moving
to Texas. I am interested in this because my Wells Carnes and family
were
also in Hinds Co., Mississippi about the same time. His son, William
Redwine
Carnes moved to Texas about 1838.
We first find Wells [born about 1778]in Franklin Co., GA. Then
through
Alabama to Mississippi. The Samuel Swazey Carnes line possibly comes
from
the same general location as Thomas Petters Carnes. Carnesville,
Georgia
was
named for him. He is said to have come from Maryland and New Jersey.
Most of what I have is Samuel Swazey descendants. They do go a bit
more
than
4 generations from John. I'll share if you have any interest.
I'm wondering if these lines connect at any point further back.
Betty

Does anybody know anything about John Carnes 1735-1891, of Mendham,
New
Jersey who married Penelope Coleman March 21, 1755 in New Jersey?
The Colemans and others (Swazeys, etc.) came to New Jersey from
Southold, Long Island. The Mormons have John Carnes as also being
born in
Southold,
but I think somebody may have just been guessing that.
Their children:
William
Sarah Carnes Day
Penelope Carnes Thompson
Ephraim
Samuel Swazey Carnes.
I descend from Samuel Swazey Carnes, who later joined the colony in
Adams
County, Mississippi founded by his great uncles, the reverends Samuel
and
Richard Swazey.
